US spies say ‘pro-Ukrainian group’ bombed Nord Stream – NYT

Anonymous agents cited unspecified intelligence to deny US responsibility for the pipeline attack

Unspecified new intelligence “suggests that a pro-Ukrianian group” was behind the September 2022 attack on Nord Stream pipelines, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, quoting anonymous US officials.

The Times’ unnamed sources said they “believed the saboteurs were most likely Ukrainian or Russian nationals, or some combination of the two” and that “no American or British nationals were involved.” They further said they had no evidence Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky or his “top lieutenants” were involved, or that the “any Ukrainian government officials” directed the attack.

The anonymous officials could not say who directed or paid for the “operation,” and said it was possible the attack “might have been conducted off the books by a proxy force with connections to the Ukrainian government or its security services.”

The bombs that tore apart three of four pipeline strings at the bottom of the Baltic Sea were “most likely” planted by experienced divers, “who did not appear to be working for military or intelligence services,” but may have received “specialized government training in the past,” the anonymous officials claimed.

They also said US President Joe Biden and his top aides “did not authorize” the attack on Nord Stream and that “there was no US involvement” in the blasts. These statements directly address last month’s report by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who accused the US of ordering the bombing and planting the explosives.

While Western European officials also believe the attack was state-sponsored, “US officials have not stated publicly that they believe the operation was sponsored by a state,” the Times noted.

Some officials see “Ukraine and its allies” as having “the most logical potential motive” to destroy the pipelines. It was unclear who they meant by allies; though Poland has been the most outspoken critic of Nord Stream, the US and the entire NATO bloc have sent more than $100 billion worth of weapons and other aid to Kiev over the past year.

“Any findings that put blame on Kyiv or Ukrainian proxies could prompt a backlash in Europe and make it harder for the West to maintain a united front in support of Ukraine,” the Times reporters noted.

The Nord Stream explosions happened five weeks after the Moscow car bombing that killed Russian journalist Darya Dugina. Anonymous US spies told the Times last October they believed “elements” within the Ukrainian government – but not Zelensky – were responsible, but declined to name anyone. Kiev has officially denied any responsibility whatsoever.

“After the Nord Stream operation, there was hushed speculation – and worry – in Washington that parts of the Ukrainian government might have been involved in that operation as well,” the Times reported on Tuesday.

The anonymous officials who spoke to the paper said there was “no evidence so far” the Ukrainian government was involved, and that President Joe Biden’s trust in Zelensky “has been steadily increasing.” The Times did acknowledge that American intelligence has “limited visibility into Ukrainian decision-making,” despite Kiev’s “deep dependence” on the US.

According to The New York Times, Biden sees the rising cost of eggs, along with inflation in general, as a severe threat to his re-election prospects. Biden thinks a mass vaccination campaign could provide relief to households while helping his political fortunes.

For President Biden, there are also political considerations at work. Egg prices, which soared in 2022, were 70 percent higher in January than they were a year earlier. Those high prices have given Republicans another opportunity to attack Mr. Biden over inflation just as he is preparing to run for re-election in 2024.

If a vaccination campaign could provide economic relief for households, Mr. Biden would certainly be interested in such an undertaking, one official said.

But there is more to this story.

Peck has been with the company since its founding in 2012. Prior to her work at Zoetis Peck previously served as Pfizer’s Executive Vice President of Worldwide Business Development and Innovation.

Bruce Hensel, medical correspondent at Los Angeles NBC affiliate for over 30 years, avoids jail time despite soliciting nude photos from child

Bruce Hensel, an ex-medical correspondent for an NBC affiliate station in Los Angeles, was sentenced Monday to two years of probation for having solicited naked pictures of a child with the intent to commit a crime.

Hensel pleaded no contest to the charges, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Although the Emmy Award-winning veteran of 30 years avoided jail time, he is at least now a registered sex offender.

Hensel was arrested in November 2019 after investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department's northeast division looked into probable child sexual exploitation involving the 9-year-old daughter of one of his female acquaintances.

The Times reported that a transcript of the text exchange between Hensel and the child was included in a filing submitted to the California Medical Board last year, revealing the doctor had repeatedly demanded "sexy and private" images.

Hensel, who served as co-director of emergency rooms at Century City Hospital and Sam Dimas Community Hospital, claimed his repeated attempts from March through August 2019 to satisfy an apparent pedophilic lust were an "isolated thing."

The pedophile, listed as the executive producer on two transsexual-focused Showtime movies, had endeared himself to the victim's mother, discussing the possibility of financing a movie in which the little girl would star.

"I have always been good special friends and you feel safe with me so I will protect you and get you something," wrote Hensel in 2019. "They could maybe make you a star if you are willing to take some risks."

Trudeau Pledges ‘Disinfo’ Crackdown Amid Claims of Chinese Election Meddling on Behalf of His Party

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his government will be setting aside $5.5 million to combat “disinformation” as he struggles with accusations of benefitting from Chinese Communist Party election interference.

Prime Minister Trudeau announced the $5.5 million investment into “combatting disinformation” on Monday at a press conference in Ottawa saying, “I can announce were are investing 5.5 million dollars to build capacity of civil society organisations to combat disinformation.”

“Because we know disinformation often generated abroad can be a real threat to our elections and it’s a threat that the federal government cannot combat alone,” he added.

While it is unknown which organisations and groups will benefit from the $5.5 million, the Trudeau government has a history of funding questionable groups and individuals in recent years.

Among those who were handed Trudeau government cash, was alleged “anti-hate” activist Leith Marouf who was revealed to be a prolific antisemite on social media.

Marouf’s group, the Community Media Advocacy Centre (CMAC), saw its funding cut in August of last year after Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Minister Ahmed Hussen called his statements “reprehensible and vile.”

Trudeau has also given large sums of cash to the Canadian Anti-Hate Network (CAHN), which came under fire for attempting to link the former flag of Canada that flew during World War Two with hatred, calling it a “hate-promoting symbol” as part of a government-funded school handbook project.

The Canadian Liberal government has decried “disinformation” in the past as well and has been accused of peddling disinformation themselves, particularly regarding an attempt to ban hunting firearms last year.

Trudeau’s press conference on Monday also saw the Prime Minister address major concerns over foreign election interference from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including allegations that his Liberal Party directly benefitted from the alleged interference in the last two federal elections.

The allegations emerged from leaks from the Canadian Secret Intelligence Service (CSIS), which claimed to have warned Trudeau about Chinese attempts to interfere in the last two elections.

When previously confronted on the topic, Trudeau dodged questions and even made bizarre statements regarding anti-Asian hatred in response to questions regarding MP Han Dong, who was specifically named by the CSIS leakers.

Gang Members Hold Positions at ‘Highest Levels’ of LA Sheriff’s Department, Investigation Reveals

A blistering new official investigation decries violent, lawless “deputy gangs” that continue to wield extraordinary power within the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. The report delivers a call to action for new Sheriff Robert Luna: “It is time to eradicate this 50-year plague upon the County of Los Angeles.”

The report identifies at “least a half dozen” active gangs and cliques — and names them: the Executioners, the Banditos, the Regulators, the Spartans, the Gladiators, the Cowboys, and the Reapers.

These groups pose a threat to the general public — deputies hoping to prove themselves worthy of gang membership routinely seek out violent encounters with the public, the investigation reports — as well as to the internal command-and-control structure of LASD. The gangs “undermine supervision, destroy public trust, are discriminatory, disruptive, and act contrary to … professional policing,” the report concludes.

Perhaps most alarming, the investigation reveals that in recent years “tattooed deputy gang members” have risen to “the highest levels” of department leadership. It calls out recent former Sheriff Alex Villanueva (who lost his 2022 reelection bid) for betraying promises of reform by installing gang members as his right-hand men. Villanueva, the report says, “at minimum tolerated, if not rewarded deputy gangs.”

The new investigation describes a deputy-gang culture that is “deeply embedded” within LASD, calling it a “cancer” that “must be excised.” Conducted by the special counsel to the Civilian Oversight Commission — the county body that watchdogs LASD — the 70-page investigation relied on interviews with nearly 80 witnesses as well as dozens of depositions, court exhibits, and civil lawsuits.

LASD is the nation’s second-largest municipal law enforcement agency. Its deputies are sworn to “serve and protect” more than four million residents — as well as to operate America’s largest county jail system. Yet LASD has long been riven by lawlessness. Gangs and cliques were first decried in LASD in 1973, with the identification of a group called the Little Devils. A landmark report by the Kolts Commission, issued in the wake of the Rodney King beating, denounced the problem of deputy cliques publically in 1992. A 2021 report commissioned by L.A. County underscored that deputy-gangs had cost taxpayers at least $55 million in court judgments and settlements, and it excoriated leadership that “can’t or won’t” implement gang reforms.

In the past, official reports have minced words around the “gang” terminology; this new report insists that common behaviors by deputy cliques meet the definition of “law enforcement gangs” under the state’s penal code, and that both cliques and gangs “must be eradicated” in the name of public safety.

Ex-Clinton Lawyer Killed by ‘Turbulence’ during Flight

A high-profile former Clinton lawyer has been killed in a freak incident that caused no other injuries after the plane she was traveling on hit turbulence during the flight.

The passenger killed in the incident has been named by authorities as Dana J. Hyde.

Hyde, 55, served as a top attorney in the administrations of former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

She also once served on the 9/11 Commission.

Hyde was reportedly found unresponsive after the private business jet she was traveling on hit turbulence over New England.

The plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Bradley International Airport, just north of Hartford.

Hyde who lived in Cabin John, Maryland, was rushed by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Hartford.

She was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors, the Connecticut State Troopers said in a statement.

Her remains are with the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner while an investigation has been launched by federal authorities, according to NBC News.

The FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating what happened aboard the Bombardier executive jet that was traveling from Keene, New Hampshire, to Leesburg, Virginia, before suddenly diverting to Bradley.

Pentagon says U.S. will keep military presence in Iraq, 20 years after invasion

About 2,500 U.S. troops are currently stationed in Iraq.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says the U.S. will maintain a military presence in Iraq, 20 years after the United States invaded Iraq and overthrew President Saddam Hussein.

Austin made the announcement during an unannounced trip to Iraq on Tuesday – two weeks shy of the 20-year anniversary of the invasion.

He said after a meeting with Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani that U.S. forces would remain in the country "at the invitation of the government of Iraq," Austin according to Reuters.

"The United States will continue to strengthen and broaden our partnership in support of Iraqi security, stability and sovereignty," he said also said.

U.S. forces withdrew from Iraq in 2011, but roughly 2,500 U.S. troops remained stationed there to help local forces combat the Islamic State terror network.

Meet the British intelligence-linked firm that warped MH17 news coverage

Staffed by British special forces veterans, Pilgrims’ Group quietly shaped international coverage of the MH17 disaster as it shepherded journalists to and from the crash site.

In November of 2022, a final judgment arrived in the trial of alleged perpetrators of the attack on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17). Russian nationals Igor Girkin and Sergey Dubinskiy, and Donbas separatist Leonid Kharchenko, were convicted in absentia for the murder of MH17’s 283 passengers and 15 crew members. They were ruled to have arranged the transfer of the Buk surface-to-air missile system that reportedly struck the plane.

Oleg Pulatov, the only defendant to seek legal representation during the trial, was conversely acquitted on all charges, which prosecutors will not appeal.

The Malaysian airliner had been purportedly shot down by a missile on July 17th 2014, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew aboard.

Heavily dependent on information supplied by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) and the Western government-funded “open source” investigations organization known as Bellingcat, the guilty verdicts appeared to vindicate an established narrative in which Russia and its Donbas allies were solely culpable.

But as this investigation will reveal, much of the news coverage of MH17 was heavily influenced by a shadowy entity called Pilgrims Group, which is closely tied to British intelligence.

Staffed and led by British Special Forces veterans, Pilgrims Group is a private security company offering elite security services to London’s embassies, diplomats, spies, and business interests abroad, particularly in high-risk environments. It also trains foreign militaries and paramilitary groups, and provides protection to reporters and their employers.

It was in the latter context that Pilgrims Group shaped media coverage – and by extension, official investigations – of MH17. The company had maintained a presence in Kiev since the early days of the US-orchestrated Maidan “revolution” in late 2013, shepherding journalists to and from the scenes of major events in Ukraine. In the process, it maintained control over what the reporters under its watch saw and how they understood the situations they encountered.

As such, Pilgrims Group played a pivotal role in the effort by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) and British intelligence to convict Russia and the Donbas separatists for MH17’s downing. The operation began while the plane’s wreckage remained smoldering on the ground of rebel-controlled territory, and ultimately prevented the initiation of any genuinely independent investigations.
