Has anyone considered the meaning of the name "Matamoros"?
The verb matar in Spanish is to kill. Moro is the Spanish word for "Moor".
Anon has no opinion on the significance or not of the name of the city where the two Americans were killed, but it does seem to be coincidental, perhaps in an unintentional way.
