First Amendment Under Attack in Florida: Bill Requires Bloggers Register with State and New Hate Crime Bill Introduced
Florida state Senator Jason Brodeur has proposed a bill that would require bloggers to file reports with the state if they are paid for posts about the state’s governor, lieutenant governor, cabinet members or legislative officials. Newspapers would not be subject to the same rules. Republican Newt Gingrich wrote, “The idea that bloggers criticizing a politician should register with the government is insane.”
In another assault on the First Amendment, Florida state Representative Mike Caruso introduced a new bill that “makes anti-Semitism a hate crime.” Reporter Chris Nelson wrote: “If Florida HB 269 is passed, someone who makes fun of another person’s clothes if they are considered “ethnic or religious” can be arrested & charged with a THIRD DEGREE FELONY AND HATE CRIME!” The new proposal was reportedly put forward by the GOP to silence the “Goyim Defense League” that has been sharing flyers in Florida neighborhoods and holding up anti-Semitic banners over bridges that are critical of Jews.
