Honduras will seek to establish diplomatic ties with China

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Honduras President Xiomara Castro announced Tuesday that her government will seek to establish diplomatic relations with China, which would imply severing relations with Taiwan.
Castro said on her Twitter account that she instructed Honduran Foreign Affairs Minister Eduardo Reina to start negotiations with China and that her intention is “to expand the borders with freedom.”
Honduras is one of the few remaining allies of Taiwan, and Castro’s announcement represents a change on its diplomatic views.
Taiwan’s official Central News Agency quoted an unidentified Foreign Ministry official as saying they were “in the process of ascertaining the situation” and had no further details.
China claims self-ruled, democratic Taiwan is part of its territory and sees diplomatic recognition of the island as interference in its affairs. Beijing has isolated Taiwan diplomatically with a long campaign against such recognition under the “one-China” policy.
In January 2022, the foreign affairs minister told The Associated Press that Honduras would continue strengthening ties with Taiwan and establishing a diplomatic relationship with China was not a priority for Castro.
It’s not clear what made the government change its mind.

Special prosecutor steps down in case against Alec Baldwin

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A special prosecutor who doubles as a state legislator is stepping down from her role in the manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin in the death of a cinematographer on a New Mexico film set.
Baldwin’s legal team in February sought to disqualify special prosecutor and Republican state Rep. Andrea Reeb of Clovis based on constitutional provisions that safeguard the separation of powers between distinct branches of government.
Reeb said in a statement Tuesday that she “will not allow questions about my serving as a legislator and prosecutor to cloud the real issue at hand.”
“It has become clear that the best way I can ensure justice is served in this case is to step down so that the prosecution can focus on the evidence and the facts,” Reeb said.
District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies filed a notification in state district court and declined further comment.
Baldwin and weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 18-months in prison and fines.
Hutchins died shortly after being wounded Oct. 21, 2021, during rehearsals at a ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe. Baldwin was pointing a pistol at Hutchins when the gun went off, killing her and wounding the director, Joel Souza.

‘Extremely Rare’ Coffin of Roman Aristocrat Discovered in 1,600-Year-Old British Cemetery

The coffin of a Roman aristocrat was exhumed in the United Kingdom. Researchers say this discovery could “unlock the secrets of one of the most significant periods in British history.”
The government of Leeds and West Yorkshire Joint Services announced researchers had discovered a lead coffin, which they believe contains the “remains of a late-Roman aristocratic woman” during an archeological dig, along with the remains of over 60 other people.
These remains were found in a 1,600-year-old cemetery in Leeds and “are believed to include both late-Roman and early-Saxon people” based on “burial customs of both cultures [having been] found in different graves.”
Museums and Heritage reported researchers undertook the dig after “late Roman stone buildings and a small number of Anglo-Saxon style structures” were discovered nearby.
The press release noted the discoveries could help archeologists “chart the largely undocumented and hugely important transition between the fall of the Roman Empire in around 400AD and the establishment of the famed Anglo-Saxon kingdoms which followed.”
Quoting David Hunter, the principal archeologist at West Yorkshire Joint Services, the BBC noted that the composition of the coffin is of particular interest to researchers because “Lead coffins were expensive. The fact the family gave this person the expense of getting sheets of lead and the expertise to make the coffin, then it tells us a lot.”

LOS ANGELES, March 13 (Reuters) - The Academy Awards telecast on Sunday attracted roughly 18.7 million U.S. television viewers to the film industry's highest honors, according to data released by Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) broadcaster ABC on Monday.
The audience rose 12% from last year, when 16.7 million people tuned in, ABC said. At that show, Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock before winning best actor.
This year's ceremony celebrated a rebound in moviegoing as several of the nominees, including "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Top Gun: Maverick," were blockbuster hits at cinemas. Multiverse adventure "Everything Everywhere All at Once" took home best picture and dominated the awards.
