More than 50 firefighters battle large warehouse fire at Chipping Norton in Sydney's south west

Mar 16 2023

A large warehouse fire erupted in south-west Sydney on Thursday night, with more than 50 firefighters called to battle the flames.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the blaze was reported about 6pm and the site was "totally involved" in fire when trucks arrived.

He said the situation was escalated to "fifth alarm" status, with 20 trucks and more than 50 firefighters at the scene at Rickard Street.

No injuries have been reported.

It is understood property is a furniture warehouse.

Footage from the scene showed fire billowing from a collapsed roof and streaming out of windows.

Superintendent Dewberry said the furniture inside the warehouse provided a high fuel load for the fire.

"It is too early to know what caused the blaze, the main effort at the moment is to get the fire out," he said.

"We will run a fire duty during the night and then we will start to look at where this fire started and how."

"It is going to take a number of hours to get this fire out but the main thing is the surrounding premises have been evacuated those people are safe."

He was thankful no people were reported to be inside, and firefighters were working to stop flames spreading to neighbouring properties.

"It was pretty intense … we have our hazards materials experts here, they will be monitoring the smoke to make sure it is not an ongoing concern."

Vehicles parked next to the warehouse were being moved away from the burning building.

California Senior Care Facility Faces Charges in Connection with 14 COVID-19 Deaths

March 16, 2023

Los Angeles (LACDAO) – Silverado Senior Living Management, Inc., and three managers have been charged in connection with 14 COVID-related deaths at its residential care facility in 2020.

“The investigation revealed that the Silverado management team was aware of the risks associated with admitting a new resident from a high-risk area and failed to follow the appropriate procedures to protect their employees and the vulnerable people in their care,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said. “These careless decisions created conditions that needlessly exposed Silverado staff and its residents to serious injury and – tragically – death.”

Loren Bernard Shook, Jason Michael Russo and Kimberly Cheryl Butrum were charged with 13 felony counts of elder endangerment and five felony counts of violation causing death. The Irvine-based company also face the same charges.

The complaint alleges that in March 2020, Silverado is accused of admitting a new resident from a psychiatric unit in New York City, which was a COVID-19 epicenter at the time. Upon arrival at the company’s Beverly Place facility in Los Angeles’ Fairfax District, the resident allegedly was not medically assessed for the virus or other conditions.

The resident began displaying COVID symptoms the following morning and ultimately tested positive for the virus. After the resident displayed symptoms consistent with COVID, they were allegedly not placed into respiratory isolation.

Additionally, the managers are accused of not following accepted clinical standards and did not take appropriate steps to quarantine the new resident or require testing prior to admission. The facility also allegedly failed to prohibit entry of individuals who had engaged in domestic or international travel within the last 14 days to areas where COVID cases have been confirmed.

As a result, there was an outbreak at Beverly Place where 14 people, ranging in age from 32 to 94, died. Forty-five employees and 60 residents also were infected and sickened by the virus.

Those who died were:

Brittany Ringo, Elizabeth Cohen, Joseph Manduke, Catherine Apothaker, Jakob Khorsandi, Albert Sarnoff, Dolores Sarnoff, Myrna Frank, Frank Piumetti, Jay Tedeman, Luba Paz, Kaye Kiddoo, Richard Herman Michael Horn.
