When the Great Depression caused bank runs the bankers knew what was happening before the people did. The bankers, their family and friends all withdrew their money before the banks ran out of assets. When the lines started the banks closed the doors. My grandmothers family lost all of the savings they had. The bank gave them a milk cow in place of the money they had saved. They starved and froze for years. The bankers bought all the land for about 10 cents an acre in back taxes. Those same families own the land today and are very wealthy. My grandmother never trusted banks again. She kept cash in coat pockets in her closet, behind pictures in frames, under drawers in chests. She warned of the signs we are seeing now. Her cash stored in these places was silver certificates. She thought me these stories to keep me from suffering from an economic depression. I love and thank her for that.
