GOP donor faces trial on charges of sex trafficking minors

https://apnews.com/article/lazzaro-republican-donor-sex-trafficking-minnesota-db1e3ac444fe3c289adddb4b924b9092

A formerly well-connected Republican donor, accused of plying petite, vulnerable teenage girls with cash, liquor and gifts, goes on trial Tuesday on federal charges of sex trafficking minors. Anton “Tony” Lazzaro is charged with seven counts involving “commercial sex acts” with five minors ages 15 and 16 in 2020, when he was 30 years old. His indictment touched off a political firestorm that led to the downfall of Jennifer Carnahan as chair of the Republican Party of Minnesota. His co-defendant, Gisela Castro Medina, who formerly led the College Republicans chapter at the University of St. Thomas, pleaded guilty to two counts last year. She is cooperating with prosecutors and will testify against him. She faces sentencing in August. Lazzaro denies the sex-trafficking allegations. He says the government targeted him for political reasons and because of his wealth. Prosecutors say it’s simply a sex-trafficking case. They have not signaled any intent to call political figures as witnesses, nor has the defense. U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz has already rejected Lazzaro’s claims of selective prosecution. But Lazzaro insists he’s innocent and that the charges are politically motivated.

Putin visits Russian-occupied Mariupol after ICC issues arrest warrant

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-makes-surprise-trip-mariupol-first-occupied-donbas-ukraine-2023-03-19/

A day after being accused of war crimes by the International Criminal Court, President Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Mariupol, scene of some of the worst devastation of his year-old invasion. State television showed extended footage of Putin being shown around the city on Saturday night, meeting rehoused residents and being briefed on reconstruction efforts by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin. The port city of Mariupol became known around the world as a byword for death and destruction as much of it was reduced to ruins in the first months of the war, eventually falling to Russian forces in May. Hundreds were killed in the bombing of a theatre where families with children were sheltering. The Organization for Security and Cooperation and Europe (OSCE) said Russia's early bombing of a maternity hospital there was a war crime. Moscow denied that and has said since it invaded on Feb. 24 last year that it does not target civilians. Putin's visit had the air of a gesture of defiance after the ICC issued a warrant for his arrest on Friday, accusing him of the war crime of deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. He has not publicly commented on the move, but his spokesman said it was legally "null and void" and that Russia found the very questions raised by the ICC to be "outrageous and unacceptable". An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the visit to the devastated city was tantamount to a perpetrator returning to the scene of the crime. "The criminal always returns to the crime scene," Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter. "As the civilized world announces the arrest of the 'war director' (VV Putin) in case of crossing its borders, the murderer of thousands of Mariupol families came to admire the ruins of the city & graves. Cynicism & lack of remorse." The visit to Mariupol was the first that Putin has made to the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine's Donbas region since the war started, and the closest he has come to the front lines. While Zelenskiy has made a number of trips to the battlefield to boost the morale of his troops and talk strategy, Putin has largely remained inside the Kremlin while running what Russia calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine.

State media said he visited a new residential neighbourhood that had been built by Russian military with the first people moving in last September. "Do you live here? Do you like it?" Putin was shown asking residents. "Very much. It's a little piece of heaven that we have here now," a woman replied, clasping her hands and thanking Putin for "the victory." Residents have been "actively" returning, Khusnullin told Putin. Mariupol had a population of half a million people before the war and was home to the Azovstal steel plant, one of Europe's largest, where Ukrainian fighters held out for weeks in underground tunnels and bunkers before being forced to surrender. "The downtown has been badly damaged," Khusnullin said. "We want to finish (reconstruction) of the centre by the end of the year, at least the facade part. The centre is very beautiful." Mariupol is in the Donetsk region, one of four largely Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine that Putin in September moved to annex in an action rejected as illegal by most countries at the United Nations General Assembly. Putin travelled there by helicopter after a visit to Crimea on the ninth anniversary of its annexation by Russia from Ukraine. From Mariupol, he went to Rostov in southern Russia, where state TV on Sunday showed him meeting Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, commander of Russia's war effort in Ukraine.

Progressive DA Alvin Bragg's case against Trump hinges on witnesses with 'credibility problems': Andy McCarthy

https://www.foxnews.com/media/progressive-da-alvin-bragg-case-trump-witnesses-credibility-problems-andy-mccarthy

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump shared that he faces potential arrest over accusations of "hush money" paid to porn star Stormy Daniels. Fox News contributor and former assistant U.S. attorney to the Southern District of New York, Andy McCarthy, joined "One Nation with Brian Kilmeade" host Brian Kilmeade to discuss what the news means for Trump. Kilmeade noted that a spokesperson for the former president has shared there has been no formal notification of an arrest, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office has declined to comment. McCarthy pointed out to Kilmeade that this case hinges on the testimony of Daniels and former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, both of whom have credibility problems.

"[Bragg] walked away from it Brian and my old office, the Southern District of New York, the federal prosecutors in Manhattan also wanted no part of this case, which hinges not only on the testimony of the porn star Stormy Daniels, who, you know, look, I think it's credible for her to claim that this happened way back when, but at the same time, you know, she's on record… a couple of times saying it didn't happen," McCarthy said. "The other crucial witness here is Michael Cohen and I think, probably, the feds walked away from him because of his deep credibility problems. So you're not starting out in a great place with those witnesses." McCarthy added that if Trump were to be arrested, the United States Secret Service and NYPD would coordinate to ensure his safety, and he would likely surrender in a secure area without a traditional arrest. The NYPD would take fingerprints and photographs, but the mugshot would not be expected to be made public. Trump would then make an initial appearance before a judge in court. "The NYPD and the DA's office will get him through the processing. I don't think he'll be arrested in the traditional sense of they'll place handcuffs on him and perp-walk him. Given all the security and logistical nightmare that's involved with this kind of proceeding with a former president, what I'd expect is they'll figure out a place for him to surrender in a secure area where the Secret Service will stay with him," McCarthy said.

He continued, "The New York City police will process him, meaning they will do fingerprints and photographs, which is what they do for every person who comes into the system. I doubt we'll see the mug shot any time soon. We shouldn't see it because it's supposed to be nonpublic. I know these things leak from time to time, but I wouldn't hold my breath for this one for a while. And then they'll have to get him to court where he'll be making an initial appearance before a judge." As this case relates to other cases involving the former president, McCarthy predicts once Bragg "crosses the Rubicon," we are "going to hear from the other ones" as well. In a National Review column, McCarthy stated that the impending prosecution of Trump is a "disgrace" as it is a political move by a progressive prosecutor to benefit the Democratic Party in the "long term."

Trump says Biden ‘stuffed’ Manhattan DA’s office to pursue Stormy Daniels case

https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/3907543-trump-says-biden-stuffed-manhattan-das-office-to-pursue-stormy-daniels-case/

Former President Trump on Sunday accused President Biden of having ‘stuffed’ the Manhattan District Attorney’s office probing a hush-money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels with officials from the Department of Justice, despite it being a city-run office. Trump’ took to his Truth Social platform to claim Biden “’stuffed’ the D.A.’s Office with Department of Injustice people,” including what he called a “DOJ operative” sent from Washington, D.C. Trump did not specify which individual he was referring to being an operative.

“Biden wants to pretend he has nothing to do with the Manhattan D.A.’s Assault on Democracy when, in fact, he has ‘stuffed’ the D.A.’s Office with Department of Injustice people, including one top DOJ operative from D.C,” Trump wrote.

He also took a shot at District Attorney Alvin Bragg who he claimed “is taking his orders from D.C.” Bragg, a Democrat, is a New York City elected official who took office late last year. His office is staffed by city officials and is not at the direction of the president, who oversees federal officials. Trump in his post also turned his attention toward his campaign to reassert his false claim that he beat Democratic presidential challengers “TWICE” despite his 2020 election loss for a second term. A Manhattan grand jury indictment is expected in the case being investigated by Bragg’s office that involves a hush-money payment to Daniels made during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The case had previously been closed before Bragg decided he would reopen it. An indictment of Trump has been signaled by prosecutors but the timing of that is unknown. Trump on Saturday claimed that he would be arrested in connection with the case on Tuesday but the DA’s office has not confirmed such details. A spokesman for Trump on Saturday said the former president had not had any “notification” of such action. “President Trump is rightfully highlighting his innocence and the weaponization of our injustice system,” the spokesman said. The Department of Justice is also probing Trump in matters involving the potential mishandling of classified documents and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot as well as efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. Attorney General Merrick Garland was appointed by Biden but the White House routinely says it stays out of matters involving federal investigations. The Hill has reached out to the White House and the District Attorney’s office for comment.

Reputed NYC gangster out on sweetheart deal from Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg arrested again after allegedly mugging teen

https://nypost.com/2023/02/17/reputed-nyc-gangster-arrested-again-after-mugging-teen/

A reputed gang member who was let off the hook for multiple felonies by the Manhattan DA’s Office used his second chance to allegedly mug a 14-year-old boy and pack a pistol on a playground, The Post has learned. Accused gun-toting robber Charles Lindsay is finally behind bars on the new charges, although no thanks to the woke Manhattan office — which even refused to say Friday whether it will try to nix the previous sweetheart deal it made with the suspect. Lindsay, 22 — an alleged member of the “Rich Fam” gang connected to several high-end heists — was facing four felony counts of grand larceny in December for allegedly helping to snatch a total of $25,000 in handbags and other luxury items from Madison Avenue boutiques in a string of robberies. But instead of prosecuting the case, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg agreed to let the suspect go if he went to five sessions with Manhattan Justice Opportunities, a diversion program for offenders. The DA’s office told cops it came up with the mind-boggling proposition because it needed to clear its packed calendar, a law-enforcement source had said. Lindsay had at least eight other prior arrests at the time, including for robbery. Yet instead of paying back the slide by staying out of trouble, a little over a month later, Lindsay and three others walked up to a 14-year-old boy on Fulton Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Jan. 24, punched him in the face and snatched his cash and iPhone, according to a criminal complaint. Lindsay was identified as a suspect in the mugging, and eagle-eyed cops recognized him from a photo that the department had put out of him in the case when they spotted him in St. Andrew’s Park on Feb. 15, according to law-enforcement sources and the complaint. The officers tried to stop him, but Lindsay fled — dropping a loaded firearm as he jumped the park’s fence, according to police and the complaint. The suspect ran into the Kingston and Fulton subway station and then hopped onto the tracks and fled on foot into the tunnel. Police were waiting for him at the next stop at the Utica and Fulton, and he was cuffed, police sources said. Lindsay was arraigned Thursday night on weapons charges and held on $100,000 bail as requested by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

A rep for Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg refused to answer questions about Lindsay’s earlier plea deal and whether the new charges would revive the grand-larceny cases against him. Law-enforcement sources said Lindsay has yet to attend a single session for his diversion program. “We cannot comment given that it is an open and pending matter,” said the spokesman for the Manhattan DA’s office. Jake Salinas, 27, a store employee at Zadig & Voltaire, which was one of Lindsay’s alleged grand-larceny targets, was shocked to hear of the suspect’s no-jail plea deal. “He’s not really paying for what he did, and that’s a lot of money. … It’s just a slap on the wrist,” Salinas said of the plea agreement. “It sets a precedent for anyone else who hears his story that nothing is to be done.” Salinas, who was working at the time of the heist, told The Post that two people scoped out the place wearing ski masks as the others waited outside. “When they got to the back of the store, four more guys came to the front. One guy stayed outside. There was like seven of them,” the worker said. The thieves made off with high-end items at the front of the store and ran off, according to Salinas, who added that one of them yelled, “Don’t touch me!” before fleeing.

Criminal lawyer and former Bronx Assistant District Attorney Michael Discioarro ripped Bragg’s office to The Post, asking, “What exactly is he working on? “When will he enforce the laws of New York? Who is worthy of prosecution at this point?” the ex-prosecutor said. “The office of the Manhattan DA is not a social worker. He has 300 prosecutors who are there to uphold the law, and he has failed.”
