You've Been Warned

Matthew 24:24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Revelation 13:5: The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.

The last line of the "Snake Poem", read by Donald J. Trump at many rallies (Is he talking about you? Is he telling you what he's doing because he has to?):

“Oh shut up silly woman” said the reptile with a grin, “You knew damn well I was a snake, before you took me in.”

Thomas Paine, in The Age of Reason, 200 years ago, presented his genius. And I mean he was smart. He was one of the geniuses of his age. And he presented his genius as an attack on Christianity and, boy, he really went after it. He felt his arguments would destroy forever the Bible. He predicted that in a few years the Bible would be out of print.

On returning to America, he boasted, and I quote: “When I get through, there will not be five Bibles left in America.” Fifteen hundred years after Herodotus wrote his history, there was only one copy. Twelve hundred years after Plato wrote his books, there was only one copy. We’ve got 13,000 manuscripts of the Bible. Oh, by the way, going back to Voltaire, 50 years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society used his house and his press to print Bibles.

Oh, incidentally, going back to Diocletian, 25 years after his efforts, Constantine commissioned Eusebius to prepare 50 copies of the Bible at the expense of the Roman government. H.L. Hastings says, “Infidels, with all their attacks, make about as much impression on this book as a man with a tack hammer would on the pyramids of Egypt. When the French monarch proposed the persecution of Christians,” says Hastings, “in his dominion, an old statesman said to him, ‘Sire, the Church of God is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.’”

Sothe hammers of infidels have been pecking away at this book for ages, but the hammers are worn out, and the anvil still endures. Praise the Lord for His Word. Amen? What a book, united, unique, indestructible. The grass withers. The flower fades. The Word of God abides forever.

William Pope was a member of the MethodistChurch in England for most of his life. He made a pretense of knowing Christ and served in many capacities. His wife died a genuine believer.

Soon, however, he began to drift from Christ. He had companions who believed in the redemption of demons. He began going with them to the public house of prostitution. In time, he became a drunkard.

He admired Thomas Paine and would assemble with his friends on Sundays when they would confirm each other in their infidelity. They amused themselves by throwing the Bible on the floor and kicking it around.

Finally, he contracted tuberculosis. Someone visited him and told him of the great Redeemer. He said Pope could be saved from the punishment of his sins.

But Pope replied, "I have no contrition; I cannot repent. God will damn me! I know the day of grace is lost. God has said to such as me, 'I will laugh at your calamity, and mock when your fear cometh.' I have denied Him; my heart is hardened."

Then he cried, "Oh, the hell, the pain I feel! I have chosen my way. I have done the horrible damnable deed; I have crucified the Son of God afresh; I have counted the blood of the covenant an unholy thing! Oh that wicked and horrible thing of blaspheming the Holy Spirit, which I know that I have committed; I want nothing but hell! Come, oh devil and take me!"

Pope spent most of his life in the church, but his end was infinitely worse than his beginning. Every man has the same choice. You can abide in the Vine and receive all of God's blessings, or you can be burned.

It doesn't seem like a difficult choice, does it? Yet millions of people resist God's gift of salvation, preferring the superficial relationship of the false branch. Perhaps you know people like that—or perhaps you are like that yourself. If so, Jesus' plea to you is a loving invitation: "Abide in me, and I in you."

The Bible had to bow to the mand of mine—of the mind of man. Certainly the most well-known and influential book during that time, as far as Americans are concerned, was one written byThomas Paine, a patriot of note, who lived from about 1737 to 1809. The title of His book,The Age of Reason. And in the book by Paine, he basically split his book into two parts. The first part of the book was advocating rationalism, was the supremacy of human logic, the mind is the ultimate determiner of truth.

The second part of his book was an attempt to debunk and discredit everything about the Bible: the ethics, the morality, the historicity and everything else of the Bible was denied. AndThomas Paine set upon a course to postulate reason as supreme and the Bible as unreliable. In fact, he said it had blasphemous conceits in it that masqueraded as if they were the truths of God.

Now during the Age of Reason people went so far as to deny God altogether and what we know today asmodern atheism was born out of that. In France and Germany, atheists began to arrive on the scene. And atheism became acceptable. On one occasion in Paris, in an act against believing in God, there was a veiled female brought before a group of leaders. One of the leaders of France taking this veiled female by the hand said, and I quote, “Mortals, cease to tremble before the powerless thunders of a God whom your fears have created. Henceforth acknowledge no divinity but reason. And I offer you its noblest and purest image. If you must have idols, sacrifice only to such as this.” And he pulled off a veil and there was a woman.

They took that woman, mounted her on some kind of carriage down to Notre Dame and put her on the altar there as the reigning deity to be adored. And maybe we shouldn’t wonder why French morality has been what it’s been. And this certainlyillustrates Luther’s contention that reason was the devil’s whoreand thatreason could corrupt the Christian faithat its very centerbecause it always sets itself against the mind of God.

They failed to recognize what Isaiah understoodwhen he said in chapter 55, verses 8 and 9, of God,“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” But man said not so. Our thoughts are higher, our ways are higher. We’ll sit on judgment of you. Andreason became the new deityandinstead of Jesus Christ, they worshiped the mind. And out of it came theological liberalism and higher criticism, denying Scripture and its miraculous reality.
