Secret Service Won't Allow Police to Cuff Donald Trump, Prosecutor Says

Story by Darragh Roche • 4h ago

"The Secret Service is not going to allow local law enforcement to put their hands on the former president. So what they'll do is Trump would conceivably surrender to New York, go up to New York with Secret Service, and then get processed up there, get fingerprinted, get his mug shot, and then get released without any cash bail. Just being released on his own recognizance," the prosecutor added.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has not yet announced any charges against the former president but Trump predicted his own arrest over the weekend, saying he could be arrested as early as Tuesday.

Any potential charges in New York would stem from a grand jury investigation of the alleged $130,000 hush money payment to Daniels, who has said she had an affair with Trump in 2006.

Trump has denied having sex with Daniels, denied any wrongdoing and strongly attacked the probe.

Aronberg, a Democrat, also told Florida's WPBF on Tuesday that he has "always thought an indictment of the former president is likely because you have four investigations into his alleged criminal conduct, but I think the New York case is actually the least of the four, but it's the one that's going to go first, and New York prosecutors have given every indication that it's coming later this week."

Trump is also facing a probe by Special Counsel Jack Smith relating to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, as well his alleged mishandling of classified documents discovered at his Mar-a-Lago residence, while a grand jury in Georgia is examining whether or not he pushed for 2020 election results to be overturned there.

As a former president, Trump continues to have Secret Service protection and he's currently resident in Palm Beach County, Florida. If he's charged, he will have to present himself in New York or face potential extradition from Florida to New York.

Trump's lawyer Joseph Tacopina has said the former president will surrender to face charges if he's indicted by the grand jury in the case but Trump has also called for protests against his potential arrest.

Trump's Lawyers Given Midnight Deadline Over Bombshell Evidence

Story by Ewan Palmer • 3h ago

A Circuit Court of Appeals in D.C. set Trump's lawyers a midnight deadline on Tuesday to provide information and arguments related to the case, with the Department of Justice also given a 6 a.m. Wednesday deadline—a particularly rapid turnaround request for legal filings.

The move came after a judge ruled that one of Trump's lawyers, Evan Corcoran, could be forced to testify in the classified documents investigation by voiding the usually absolute attorney-client privilege over claims the former president used his services to commit a crime.

The classified documents probe is one of several investigations in which Trump is at risk of becoming the first U.S. president to be charged with a crime, with an indictment also reported to be arriving in the near future from a New York grand jury investigating an alleged hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

The midnight deadline was set after prosecutors at Special Counsel Jack Smith's office presented evidence that Trump knowingly and deliberately misled Corcoran about his retention of sensitive materials at his Mar-a-Lago resort, ABC News first reported.

Hunter Biden Has a Huge Ukraine Problem

Story by Brent M. Eastwood • Yesterday 1:36 PM

This isn’t the first time Hunter has been implicated with supposed shady private sector activities. The younger Biden struggled with his association with Ukrainian business concerns. Let’s take a look back to examine just how bad the Ukrainian situation against Hunter is.

The saga started in 2014 when Hunter Biden took a position with a Ukrainian natural gas company called Burisma Holdings. He was paid $50,000 a month for sitting on the firm’s board of directors even though he had no prior experience or expertise in the energy industry.

The Elder Biden Was Involved in Ukraine Too

The other suspicious aspect of this business arrangement was that his father as vice president was simultaneously looking into corruption cases in Ukraine. The elder Biden was rallying EU allies to reduce the level of dirty dealings in the eastern European nation. The VP thought that firing the country’s head prosecutor, Victor Shokin, would allow Ukraine to get back on the straight and narrow to fight corruption.

Drug shortages upend hospitals care, cancer treatments

Driving the news: Drug shortages are the worst they've been in a decade, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists — a sign of how much we rely on low-margin manufacturers with limited capacity for basics like the inhalation drug albuterol and some common cancer treatments.

What they're saying: Quality control issues, selected plant closures and other manufacturing woes have added up, Michael Ganio, senior director of pharmacy, practice and quality at ASHP told Axios.

Between the lines: Oncology drugs have been hit particularly hard in recent months, putting experts on high alert.

Those in short supply include methotrexate, an injectable chemotherapy drug, and one of several generics produced by Illinois-based Akorn Pharmaceuticals, which shuttered operations last month due to bankruptcy.

Manufacturing delays and increased demand have also led to shortages of the cancer treatments cisplatin, and fluorouracil, per ASHP.

Pluvicto — used to extend survival among patients with metastatic prostate cancer — will take months to be made available to patients again, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"People will die from this shortage, for sure," Jonathan McConathy, director of the division of molecular imaging and therapeutics at the University of Alabama, told WSJ.

A survey of health systems conducted by the group End Drug Shortages Alliance found the injectable Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), used for treating bladder cancer, was being rationed or was not available for use at all.

"This is a terrible crisis. We should be doing everything we can to give every single one of these patients the best chance of survival," Laura Bray, a board member of the alliance, told CNN.

Between the lines: Manufacturing delays and quality problems are blamed for the shortages. But that's often because there aren't many alternative sites to pick up the slack in the system due to the challenging economics of the market, experts say.

"These are really low-margin businesses. These companies, particularly the ones that are making some of these sterile products relied upon so heavily by hospitals, really have little play in the supply they are able to offer," Hilary Marston, the FDA's chief medical officer told Axios.

The agency works with manufacturers as much as it can, such as quickly approving acceptable workarounds, she said. "But the underlying reality of this market remains what it is," Marston said.

Awfully quiet on the Senate front these days.

Even Schumer has nothing to say.

Who would take MM's place as minority leader?

I am sure it would be Trump's choice, whoever it was.

I don't know who would be good.

They have all missed the mark on something, some more than others.

Florida Gov. DeSantis's family roots run deep in Valley

The Governor's mother grew up in Youngstown, and his grandfather was once the chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Party

Thursday, August 11th 2022

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will be coming to the Valley to show his support for J.D. Vance, the Ohio GOP Senate candidate during a rally in Liberty, but the Florida Governor won't need any time to get acquainted with our community, as his family tree has deep roots here.

DeSantis, a potential 2024 Republican Presidential candidate, was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but his mother - Karen DeSantis - grew up in Poland and his maternal grandparents came to the Valley in the 1930s.

DeSantis's mother attended Youngstown State University in the 1970s where she met fellow student and eventual husband Ron DeSantis, who was from Aliquippa, Pa.

The DeSantis's left the Mahoning Valley and moved to Florida in the 1970s, and their son Ron was born in Jacksonville in 1978.

DeSantis's maternal grandfather, Philip E. Rogers, was born in Edinburgh, Pa. in 1923. He moved to Lowellville in 1936, graduated in 1942 from Lowellville High School, married Carolyn Delisio in 1946, and they moved to Poland in 1954.

He graduated from Youngstown University with a degree in business administration, and a master's degree in public administration. The Rogers children are Karen (DeSantis), Sister Regina Rogers, and Rev. Philip Rogers.

Rogers was the Director of the Board of Elections in Mahoning County from 1960 through 1968, and a member of the board from 1968 until 1972. He became a special assistant to the Ohio Secretary of State during Gov. James A. Rhodes's administration in 1968 and 1969.

According to his obituary published in The Vindicator, Rogers worked in the political science department at YSU, was also the assistant to the Vice President for financial affairs from 1969 through 1974 and director of classified personnel before retiring in 1982.

A 40-year member of the Mahoning County Republican Party committee, and was the GOP chairman from 1968 to 1971.

Rogers died in December of 1997, but the Florida Governor has family still living in the Valley, including his aunt Sister Regina Rogers, a Councilor at the Ursuline Sisters house in Youngstown, and his uncle Philip Rogers, a priest at Christ Our Savior Parish in Struthers and previously with St. Charles Parish in Boardman.

Dr. Bill Binning, former chairman of the political science department at YSU and former Mahoning County Republican Party chairman told 21 News that Philip Rogers was the county GOP chairman when he moved to Youngstown in 1970 and added "We talked politics."

Binning said he first learned of the Florida Ron DeSantis connection to the Valley in 2012 while on a trip to Italy with Father Rogers, Sister Regina Rogers and DeSantis's mother, Karen, whose son she told him was making a run for congress in Florida 6th District in 2012.
