From Beauty Queen To War-Zone Lawyer

Kimberley Motley isn't your typical international lawyer. The half-Korean, half-African-American former Miss Wisconsin is fighting Afghanistan's toughest criminal and human-rights cases.

Kimberley Motley is a rarity in Afghanistan: the only Western litigator in Kabul, the half-Korean, half-African-American 38-year-old Marquette Law grad is a former beauty queen (she was crowned Miss Wisconsin in 2004). She had never even traveled outside the U.S. until 2003, when she signed up for a legal education program with the U.S. State Department and landed in Afghanistan. Most of her colleagues left after a brief stint in the country, but she stayed on. Now, she spends six months out of the year in a well-fortified house in Kabul, representing criminal and human-rights cases in the country. She spoke with me about her toughest assignments, being a stranger in a strange land, and how her roots in inner city America helped her navigate Kabul.

Captured, Killed or Compromised: C.I.A. Admits to Losing Dozens of Informants

Counterintelligence officials said in a top secret cable to all stations and bases around the world that too many of the people it recruits from other countries to spy for the U.S. are being lost.

A lawyer without borders

Kimberley Motley is the first Western lawyer in Afghanistan, single-handedly tackling some of the worldโ€™s most challenging human rights and criminal cases. I had the pleasure of meeting her recently in Dubai, where we discussed her sterling work drawing attention to human rights abuses and helping people otherwise forgotten by society.

The former Miss Wisconsin has set up her own private practice in Kabul and brushed off death threats to take on cases such as brokering deals to stop child marriages. Six-year-old Naghma Mohammad was going to be sold into marriage by her father in order to pay his debts. Kim stepped in to negotiate, organised a meeting with local elders and ensured both Naghma and her sisters are now protected.

However, there is still much work to be done - more than 30% of girls under 18 surveyed by Kim within Afghan jails are either married or engaged. To tackle this wider problem, The Elders founded Girls Not Brides, a global partnership committed to ending child marriage and enabling girls to fulfil their huge potential. Their research revealed recently that a 10% reduction in child marriage could result in a 70% reduction in a country's maternal mortality rates. Globally, 14 million girls are married before they turn 18 each year โ€“ Girls Not Brides and individuals like Kim are working tirelessly to change that.

Kim describes her work as โ€œwanting to help people who are invisible become visibleโ€. The international attention her cases have attracted โ€“ such as defending a young girl imprisoned for 'adultery' after being raped and impregnated - has helped shine a light on some of the worst abuses in the country.

I loved Kimโ€™s words in the Daily Beast discussing her motivation for doing such important work: โ€œDefinitely my kids and husband motivate me. You always want your children to have it better than you have. I want to be a great example to them that there is right in this world. There are so many wrong things in the legal system in the world, if I can make things right, it makes me feel really good.โ€

Take a look at Kimโ€™s website to find out more about her cases and see the positive impact one person determined to make a difference can have in the world.

โ€œWe are resolved to move forward to ensure that all parties who were involved in the Kenosha killings and the circumstances that led to them are held accountable,โ€ Motley said in a statement Friday. โ€œWe believe that what occurred was by no means the result of the actions of only one teenaged individual.โ€

"I never thought America would look like Afghanistan, at least where I'm from," said Motley, who has practiced law in Afghanistan since 2008.

The Q notation is a way to specify the parameters of a binary fixed point number format. For example, in Q notation, the number format denoted by Q8.8 means that the fixed point numbers in this format have 8 bits for the integer part and 8 bits for the fraction part.

This report examines the issuance of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) โ€“ the digital euro โ€“ from the perspective of the Eurosystem. Such a digital euro can be understood as central bank money offered in digital form for use by citizens and businesses for their retail payments. It would complement the current offering of cash and wholesale central bank deposits.
