Clinton lawyer incident sounds a little more complicated. It sounds like the initial malfunction was a runaway stabilizer trim motor. Automatic system to counter such an event appears to have been turned off as per checklist ( assuming pilots were reading the correct checklist for the event at hand ) allowing the horizontal stabilizer to obtain a position not required for current phase of flight causing the auto pilot to kick off allowing the large nose up pitch. These pilots knew how to fly with the auto pilot off because they were able to regain controlled flight. It appears though they might have selected the wrong emergency checklist to run.
