eg, black pepper was worth way more than it's weight in gold, and for VERY good reasons.
many plants concentrate heavy metals by preferetial uptake. water hyacinths have been used to purify heavily polluted slurry ponds. after just a few months, the plants can be harvested and reduced to ash containing ALL of the heavy metals, and the water left behind is potable.
the most common source of lead contamination is undoubtedly calcium supplements. lead displaces calcium in minerals just like it does in bones. actually VERY hard to find a source for dietary calcium supplement that DOESN'T contain lead.
