This seems a rather bizarre closure, even for NM. Gallop was the site of supposed sting operation during covid. They locked down the roads then under the guise of quarantine.
Interstate 40 East at Gallup closing for 2 nights
The New Mexico State Police have alerted motorists planning to travel east on I-40 through Gallup, that the road will be closed at Exit 16 between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday and Tuesday, March 27 and 28.
Message boards on I-40 East, beginning at Flagstaff, Ariz., are warning drivers about the closures, which are needed so that a quarter-mile stretch of the road can be repaved to fix an ongoing problem there with potholes, New Mexico Department of Transportation spokesperson Dalene Baros said.
With no detour available at that location, travelers have been advised to seek overnight accommodations before they get to Exit 16 or in Gallup.
Exiting eastbound out of the city will be prohibited during the planned night work. No detour is available. Traffic from I-40 will not be permitted to use local routes because the asphalt for the road repair is being delivered from north of Gallup on state Highway 491. Those deliveries could delayed if local roads are used by traffic coming off I-40 East, Baros said.
