Side story here.. prev house I lived in had a water line. City insisted in coming out to put a smart meter on (this was before I woke up). When we listed house for sale, we staged it for sale and moved out.. ie no real water usage.

 

We either got a call, email or letter, can’t remember, telling us they needed to come out to check it because of our not using water (they thought it was defective because they could now monitor our nonexistent use of city water).

 

We blew them off as we weren’t really living there anymore, but the spying aspect was part of my awakening.

Yup. At its most benign, it’s a fairly accurate way to bill for exact usage, not relying on the homeowner to self-report. That’s what I was told. I’m sure my city was strong armed by higher ups to force this “free” unit.
