The grand jury hearing evidence in Manhattan Attorney General Alvin Bragg’s investigation into Donald Trump over the “hush money” payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels is set to break for a month, pushing back a potential indictment of the former president, reports Politico.

The hiatus was previously scheduled. The group, which typically meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, heard testimony in the Trump case on Monday but isn’t expected to meet Wednesday and is set to examine evidence in a separate matter Thursday, according to the report.

Bragg is reportedly seeking an indictment against Trump for allegedly falsifying business records by writing off the payment as legal fees to former lawyer Michael Cohen.

“Some fake cases, they have absolutely nothing,” he told reporters on his jet Saturday night after a campaign rally in Waco, Texas.

NATO is fighting on Kiev’s side – Lavrov

The US-led military bloc couldn’t be any more involved in the conflict in Ukraine, says Russia’s top diplomat

NATO countries are now de facto fighting on the side of Kiev and have become “deeply” drawn into the Ukrainian conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday.

“Once again, we drew attention to the subversive line of the NATO countries, which have been drawn into the conflict for a long time and are getting drawn into it deeper… and in fact they are fighting on the side of the Kiev regime,” Lavrov said during a press conference following talks with Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian in Moscow.

He also noted that the West no longer wishes to stop the conflict in Ukraine, and is instead working to prolong it. Lavrov pointed to a recent statement made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who claimed that any ceasefire or truce proposed by Moscow could not be allowed because it would only be in the interests of Russia.

“It is difficult for me to say what such a shallow, frankly speaking, analysis is based on. The only assumption is that the West does not want to stop this war and sees its own geopolitical interests in this war – primarily from the point of view of its attempts to eliminate another competitor on the world stage in the face of the Russian Federation,” Lavrov noted.

The diplomat also added that the West has a similar stance towards China. “Our Chinese friends are well aware that they too are already mentioned in NATO documents as competitors and long-term adversaries who must be neutralized,” Lavrov said. He noted that Russia, Iran and China will “categorically oppose” Washington and its allies’ attempts to establish everlasting Western hegemony.

Russia has repeatedly accused the West of waging a “proxy war” against it in Ukraine by continuing to provide billions of dollars worth of military aid to Kiev while imposing multiple rounds of sweeping sanctions on Moscow.

Ukrainian army ‘almost destroyed’ – Wagner chief

Clinging to the Donbass city of Artyomovsk cost Kiev dearly and possibly sealed its fate, Evgeny Prigozhin concluded

The head of the Wagner Group private military company (PMC) Evgeny Prigozhin has described Ukraine’s losses in the battle for the city of Artryomovsk as almost fatal to Kiev’s entire military. The sacrifices made by his force for the sake of Russia were worth it, he added.

“As of today, the battle for Bakhmut has almost destroyed the Ukrainian army,” Prigozhin said in a statement on Wednesday, using the name by which Kiev calls the city. The clash also “gave a serious beating to PMC Wagner,” he acknowledged.

He called the battle the “general engagement” of the entire conflict and said that in it Wagner troops got pitted against Ukrainian armed forces and “foreign units installed into them.” A victory by his troops would be “a turning point” and a historic event, securing a Russian victory, Prigozhin predicted.

“The Russian army alone will be left on the chessboard, and all other pieces will be removed,” he forecast. “Even if PMC Wagner is destroyed in the Bakhmut meat grinder but takes the Ukrainian army with it … it would mean that we have accomplished our historic mission.”

The fight for Artyomovsk has emerged as one of the most intensive and bloody engagements of the armed conflict in Ukraine, with both sides reportedly suffering significant casualties. Western officials said that the city poses no strategic military value, but Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky pledged to defend it as long as possible after proclaiming the city a fortress.

The Ukrainian leader explained his refusal to withdraw in an interview with The Associated Press earlier this week. He claimed that if Russia were to capture Artyomovsk, his government would come under international and domestic pressure to seek peace with Moscow.

“Our society will feel tired,” he told the news agency of this scenario. “Our society will push me to have compromise with them.”

Zelensky Admits Fear Of Waning Support In US: "If They Stop Helping Us, We Will Not Win"

President Volodymyr Zelensky is deeply concerned over 'Ukraine fatigue' taking over the West, and especially among the populace of his government's biggest supporter, funder, and weapons supplier - the United States.

"The United States really understands that if they stop helping us, we will not win," he told the AP in a fresh interview published Wednesday. Waning support has been especially noticeable among Republican voters, according to recent polls, and as we recently reviewed in an article, "The Trump, DeSantis, Tucker Effect: New Polls Show Republicans Increasingly Done With Ukraine."

He issued the words specifically in reference to the still raging battle for the strategic city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. Russian forces have it nearly surrounded, even as Kiev has continued to throw additional manpower and weaponry into the city's defense at a huge cost and amid mounting casualties.

Zelensky described that the capture of Bakhmut will mean that Putin will smell weakness. According to the Ukrainian leader's words:

Speaking with The Associated Press, Zelenskyy said that if Bakhmut were to fall, Putin could "sell this victory to the West, to his society, to China, to Iran," as leverage to push for a ceasefire deal that would see Ukraine agree to give up territory.

"If he will feel some blood — smell that we are weak — he will push, push, push," Zelensky continued.

"Our society will feel tired" if the Russians gain victory in Bakhmut, he said. "Our society will push me to have compromise with them." Implicit in these words are perhaps a first-time admission that significant sectors of the Ukrainian population are ready for compromise and peaceful negotiations to end the war.

And tellingly, CBS commentary on the AP interview included the following observation: "He appeared acutely aware of the risk that his country could see its vital support from the U.S. and Europe start to slip away as the 13-month war grinds on."

Arizona gov’s rep resigns over Nashville shooting ‘transphobes’ tweet

The press secretary for Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs resigned Wednesday, two days after posting a tweet that appeared to support gunning down “transphobes” in the wake of the deadly shooting at a Nashville Christian school.

“The Governor does not condone violence in any form,” Hobbs’ office said in an unsigned statement after Josselyn Berry stepped down. “This administration holds mutual respect at the forefront of how we engage with one another. The post by the Press Secretary is not reflective of the values of the administration. The Governor has received and accepted the resignation of the Press Secretary.”

Berry had posted an image of a woman brandishing firearms hours after Monday’s shooting at the Covenant School, which left three 9-year-old students and three staff members dead.

The shooter, 28-year-old Audrey Hale — who identified as transgender — was shot and killed by responding police officers.

Berry had tweeted Monday that if you “are transphobic, you’re not progressive,” prompting one Twitter user to respond, “Not sure these transphobic-from-the-left posers know who they’re messing with.”

“Us when we see transphobes,” Berry tweeted back with the gun-toting GIF from the 1980 movie “Gloria.”

Arizona Republicans were quick to denounce the tweet.

“I don’t think anyone, no matter your political leanings, would look at that tweet — any sane, professional person would look at that tweet and say, ‘This is how I want one of the top advisers to the governor of my state to conduct themselves,’” Daniel Scarpinato, a former chief of staff to GOP ex-Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, told the Arizona Republic.

“Less than 12 hours after the tragic shooting in Nashville by a deranged transgender activist [Hobbs’] Press Secretary calls for shooting people Democrats disagree with,” the Arizona Freedom Caucus proclaimed on Twitter.

“Calling for violence like this is un-American & never acceptable. [Berry] should be fired immediately,” the Republican group added, saying Berry’s “vile tweet encouraging violence” was not taken down even after being viewed millions of times.

Arizona state Sen. Anthony Kern (R-Glendale) called the post “massively disturbing” in a statement and called on Hobbs’ spokeswoman to resign immediately.

Berry later made her Twitter account private. She previously worked at Progress Now Arizona, a left-wing nonprofit that provides strategic digital campaign services.

“Autism” rates are skyrocketing among children in the United States, especially in the state of California, according to new data obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The new figures claim one in 36 American eight-year-olds, or 2.8 percent, have been diagnosed with autism. This is higher than the 1 in 44, or 2.3 percent of December 2021. By comparison with the CDC’s first autism prevalence report, published in 2007, the increase is shocking: only 1 in 150 children, or 0.7 percent, had been diagnosed sixteen years ago.

The new data makes concerning reading at a time when the nation’s children seem sicker and unhappier than ever before. Back in November, we reported on how members of Generation Z are suffering massive, pandemic-induced depression. Millions of Zoomers were diagnosed with mental-health problems during the pandemic, highlighting the terrible effects of the social-distancing measures, and the constant barrage of fear propaganda, on a generation that had already been identified as perhaps the most fragile and troubled in recent times.

Last week we reported on how Big Pharma is now using “patient-influencers” on TikTok to sell new drugs to teenagers. A new study in The Journal of Medical Internet Research reveals a very dark side to influencer marketing, a segment which is expected to be worth $23 billion this year. Pharmaceutical companies are now paying influencers to help sell “weight loss” drugs like semaglutide, otherwise known by its brand names of Ozempic and Wegovy.

“The bottom line here is that patient influencers act as a form of interactive direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising, sharing their knowledge and experiences on pharmaceutical drugs with communities of followers in which they wield great influence,” said study author Erin Willis, an associate professor of advertising, public relations and media design.

“This raises ethical questions that need more investigation.”

Every new story that comes out about the FBI’s actions in recent years makes the Bureau look worse and worse. The latest story posted by our colleagues at PJ Media involves the ongoing “seditious conspiracy” charges being brought against leaders and members of the Proud Boys. The trial of chapter leader Zach Rehl was preparing to call a witness this week, but ran into a problem. Their “witness” turned out to be a confidential informant for the FBI who had been spying on the defense team. That brought the trial to a screeching halt “until these issues have been considered and resolved.” That’s putting it mildly, to say the least.

Critics of the harsh prosecutions in the January 6th debacle continue to be vindicated. Those who have said the whole thing was a setup keep getting proved right by our own Department of Justice. According to lawyers for Zachary Rehl, a Proud Boys chapter leader charged with seditious conspiracy, the government failed to disclose that one of the witnesses scheduled to testify was actually a confidential informant for the FBI. Surprisingly, the Associated Press reported it.

“Carmen Hernandez, a lawyer for former Proud Boys chapter leader Zachary Rehl, asked a judge to schedule an immediate emergency hearing and suspend the trial “until these issues have been considered and resolved.” Lawyers for the other four defendants joined in Hernandez’s request.”

World Bank Calls for Public to Surrender Children to Global Childcare Regime

The doctrine insists that women must be emancipated from raising children so they can equally contribute to the economic security of the global elite.

Marx and Engels also promised that large amounts of money would be plowed into the economy by equalizing workplace participation, which would, in turn, facilitate equality, and make entire societies prosperous.

Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration has added its voice to the chorus calling for every able-bodied female to join the work of contributing to the GDP.

Recently, the Biden administration launched an initiative called the U.S. Strategy on Global Women’s Economic Security.

At the launch meeting, Jennifer Klein, director of the White House Gender Policy Council said we must all work to “achieve our shared vision for women’s full and equitable participation in the global economy.”

“Studies show that closing gender gaps in the workforce could add between $12 and $28 trillion in global GDP over a decade,” Klein said.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated these sentiments: “The strategy that we’re putting forward has at its heart a simple vision: creating a world in which all women and girls everywhere can contribute to … economic growth and global prosperity.

Israel to allow police to search Palestinian homes without warrant

Israel's parliament, the Knesset, passed temporary legislation last night that allows police officers to conduct house searches for illegal weapons without a warrant, particularly in Arab communities, Haaretz has reported. The objective is to "reduce the number of illegal weapons used by criminal organisations by providing tools to the Israeli police and other law enforcement authorities."

According to Haaretz, the temporary law will be in effect for one year. It was submitted by MKs from both coalition and opposition parties, including all six members from the opposition Yisrael Beiteinu.

The law allows the occupation police to enter and search buildings without a court order, although the permission of an officer of the rank of superintendent or higher must be obtained. This will be documented according to standard police procedures.

It also stipulates that imprisonment of up to 10 years as well as fines for those caught with illegal arms or essential parts of a weapon. Anyone found guilty of "manufacturing, importing or exporting illegal weapons" will also have such weapons confiscated.

The move follows a similar law proposed in 2021 by former Israeli Justice Minister Gideon Sa'ar which only passed the first Knesset vote.

Human rights advocates have criticised the new law, warning that it could "harm Arab society." Similarly, the Joint List – a political alliance of Arab-majority political parties in Israel – described the law as "dangerous," adding that it "gives the Israeli police and army full powers to storm into homes without a court warrant."

Arab Israeli citizens make up 20 per cent of the population in the country. They believe that the authorities are purposely ignoring rising crime rates within their community. Indeed, Arab community leaders in Israel accuse the police of being responsible for the spread of crime within the community, accusing them of "turning a blind eye to the residents' complaints."

North Carolina board removes 2 election officials who refused to certify their county's election results

2 NC officials questioned the legitimacy of law, court decision disallowing photo ID checks, voter residency challenges

North Carolina’s state elections board on Tuesday removed two local election officials who had refused to certify their county's 2022 results after officials determined they violated state law.

The state board voted unanimously to dismiss Surry County elections secretary Jerry Forestieri and board member Timothy DeHaan in one of the strongest disciplinary actions taken against local officials across the U.S. who have delayed or refused to certify election results. Controversies over election certification have roiled mostly rural counties across the country as conspiracy theories about voting machines have spread widely among conservatives.

Forestieri and DeHaan had questioned the legitimacy of state election law and court decisions disallowing photo ID checks and voter residency challenges. They falsely claimed in a letter that the vote was "illegal" and "very uncertain."

"These rulings have stripped the election process of the trustworthiness they were designed to protect," they wrote. "Since then, the general welfare of the citizens of North Carolina has been damaged by a growing lack of trust in our election process."

The two circulated the letter during a canvas meeting last fall when county election officials convened to certify the accuracy of the vote count. DeHaan ultimately signed on to certify, while Forestieri did not.

State Board Chair Damon Circosta said Tuesday that county elections officials cannot decline to implement state board directives or court orders they disagree with.

"Those who administer elections must follow the law as it is written, not how they want it to be," Circosta said.

Transgenderism remains a mental illness

Accompanying the horrifying news today that a mass shooting took place at a Christian elementary school near Nashville, Tenn. was the bizarre background information about the alleged assailant. A troubled young woman has been blamed for the killing of three adults and three children, and she identified herself as a transgender person, according to online profiles she left behind.

Audrey Elizabeth Hale, age 28, had once been a student at Covenant Presbyterian Church's school, which she returned to yesterday to gun down others. Her motives for slaughtering six innocent people aren't clear, but it's obvious to anyone that she suffered from one or more mental illnesses. Whether or not we find out what inner demons drove her to her fatal actions today, we know that her foray into transgenderism should've prompted those who knew her to seek competent psychological counseling.

In a sane society, people do not pretend to magically transform into the other sex (and yes, there are only two categories of reproductive sex for humans), nor do we allow people to dictate their "preferred pronouns." Sexual identity is set at birth, and barring medical anomalies or a doctor's faulty vision, that is our actual sex until we die. At least that was the case until recently, when the justifiably mentally ill and the radical left (and those categories often overlap) demanded that we play along with their twisted game of make-believe and agree that men and women can somehow scientifically "transition" to the other sex.

Of course, the fictional notion of transitioning to the other sex is complete nonsense, and up until 2013, it was accurately categorized as a mental illness by the American Psychiatric Associaion (APA). In that year, the DSM-5 downgraded transgenderism to "gender dysphoria," and it's a safe bet that the leftists who control the APA will erase it completely in their next edition, much as they did when homosexuality was eliminated from their list of mental illnesses. That sleight-of-hand was accomplished not by advances in science nor medicine, but by relentless lobbying from various pro-homosexual groups and the voting body of the APA. That was the first step in getting it accepted by mainstream society, and the issue of transgenderism is following a similar path.

In the following days, we'll be lectured by the usual leftists pretending to be journalists about all the evils of allowing guns in our modern society, but criticism of transgenderism will be strictly off limits. Influence Over Global Health Policies

With the Gates Foundation being a substantial source of funding for the WHO, there are valid concerns about the Foundation’s impact on the Organization’s agenda and priorities.

The Bill Gates Foundation’s financial influence has the potential to divert the WHO’s attention from critical public health issues to projects that align more closely with the foundation’s interests.

This has resulted in a disproportionate focus on specific diseases or the promotion of certain interventions, such as mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, at the expense of other crucial health initiatives and the health and lives of the public.

Conflicts of Interest

The Gates Foundation’s funding of the WHO raises serious questions about potential conflicts of interest, given that the Foundation holds shares in pharmaceutical companies that develop and manufacture vaccines.

With the WHO being responsible for coordinating global health responses and providing guidance on vaccination policies, there is a concern that the Gates Foundation’s financial interests have and will continue to influence the WHO’s decision-making in ways that are more aligned with the foundation’s profit motives than with global health needs.

Here is the FBI’s Contract to Buy Mass Internet Data

The FBI previously purchased access to "netflow" data, which a company called Team Cymru obtains from ISPs. Team Cymru then sells it to the government.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation paid tens of thousands of dollars on internet data, known as “netflow” data, collected in bulk by a private company, according to internal FBI documents obtained by Motherboard.

The documents provide more insight into the often overlooked trade of internet data. Motherboard has previously reported the U.S. Army’s and FBI’s purchase of such data. These new documents show the purchase was for the FBI’s Cyber Division, which investigates hackers in the worlds of cybercrime and national security.

“Commercially provided net flow information/data—2 months of service,” the internal document reads. Motherboard obtained the file through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the FBI.

Netflow data creates a picture of traffic volume and flow across a network. This can include which server communicated with another, information that is ordinarily only available to the owner of the server or to the internet service provider (ISP) carrying the traffic. Team Cymru, the company ultimately selling this data to the FBI, obtains it from deals with ISPs by offering them threat intelligence in return. These deals are likely conducted without the informed consent of ISPs’ users.

Team Cymru explicitly markets its product’s capability of being able to track traffic through virtual private networks, and show which server traffic is originating from. Multiple sources previously told Motherboard that netflow data can be used to identify infrastructure used by hackers.

Team Cymru’s products can also include data such as URLs visited, cookies, and PCAP data, but the FBI document does not specify access to any of these data types. In parallel to Motherboard’s earlier coverage of netflow sales of U.S. agencies, a whistleblower approached the officer of Senator Ron Wyden and reported to them the alleged warrantless use of this data by NCIS, a civilian law enforcement agency that’s part of the Navy. The whistleblower approached Wyden’s office after filing a complaint through the official reporting process with the Department of Defense. NCIS previously told Motherboard it uses netflow data “for various counterintelligence purposes.”

Leaders of UK, Scotland, Ireland, London Now all of South Asian Heritage

Politicians of South Asian Heritage seem to be having a moment in the British Isles, with politicians claiming Indian and Pakistani history holding several of the most powerful political offices in the islands.

Humza Yousaf was elected the leader of Scotland’s ruling left-separatist Scottish National Party (SNP) on Monday, and on Wednesday will be sworn in as First Minister. In doing so, the Pakistani-heritage politician will join several other South Asians dominating the top of British politics, an impressive achievement in a country claimed by some to be stricken by considerable levels of institutional racism, and where by the latest count over 80 per cent of full-time residents are white.

As First Minister, Yousaf will lead Scotland’s devolved government — roughly equivalent to a U.S. State government — which is one of four constituent home nations in the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister of the whole United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, also has South Asian heritage and was born in England to parents of Indian Punjabi heritage, a region on the India-Pakistan border.

Yousaf is the United Kingdom’s first national leader of the Muslim faith, while Sunak is the first of the Hindu faith. Meanwhile, administering home affairs for the Sunak government across the United Kingdom including policing and border control is Buddhist Suella Braverman, who like many Anglo-Indians has parents who came to the United Kingdom from India as a mobile administrative and middle class via the British Empire in Africa.

Braverman is only Britain’s second Indian-heritage Home Secretary, in fact. The senior ministerial position was recently held by fellow Conservative politician Priti Patel.

As well as the national Prime Minister, the Scottish First Minister, and the Home Secretary — one of the highest offices in the land — the Mayor of London, the capital and largest city, is also of South Asian heritage. Mayor Sadiq Khan was born in London to parents who came to the United Kingdom from Pakistan in the 1960s.

There does not appear to be a particular political flavour with these recent developments: Conservative party second-generation immigration politicians hold more power and positions than those from the left and hard left, despite the narrative from the left-leaning more heavily into race-based politics. The UK’s flagship Conservative newspaper The Daily Telegraph even took the occasion of Yousaf’s election this week as an opportunity to attack the left-wing Labour Party for not having elected a single female or non-white leader in its history, despite its rhetoric on the issue.

While the trend of successful members of a small ethnic minority enjoying considerable political influence is marked in the United Kingdom — where ‘Indian’ is one of the largest minority groups in the country, but still only accounts for three per cent of the population — it is seen elsewhere, too. The political state of the UK shares the geographical area of the British Isles with another state, the Irish Republic.

The Prime Minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, also has South Asian heritage, his father an Indian immigrant doctor.

While this political trend may seem surprising, especially given the overwhelmingly white demographics of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, it is unclear whether this moment is the crest of a wave that began in the last century with a small, elite clique of children of highly-motivated early migrants to Britain having come of age and into their political prime that will pass, or a longer-term trend.

Certainly, ‘Indian’ are now the ethnic group in the United Kingdom with the highest median income, pulling slightly ahead of ‘Chinese’ and White’ in government statistics and comfortably ahead of ‘Other Asian’. Paradoxically — perhaps — ‘Pakistani’ rates lowest among those sampled, with median incomes a full third lower than their ‘Indian’ neighbours from the Subcontinent.

Ex-Mossad chief Pardo: Netanyahu, not Gallant, should be fired

The former Mossad director stated, "in any normal Western-style democratic country, any such prime minister would get up and quit the same day."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be fired and not Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, former Mossad director Tamir Pardo said Wednesday.

“The episode regarding the firing of Gallant was an extremely unusual and rare episode of the caliber that I cannot recall anything comparable occurring in the State of Israel,” he said at the annual Meir Dagan Conference at Netanya Academic College. “Gallant [correctly] read the situation and was fired.”

“In any normal Western-style democratic country, any such prime minister would get up and quit the same day,” he added.

The role of prime minister

Pardo recounted how former British prime minister David Cameron resigned immediately after failing to convince the country to accept his position on the Brexit issue of England separating from the EU.

Furthermore, a prime minister is a political office that exists to serve the nation, and “the moment that the nation says ‘no,’ he is supposed to get up and leave” his post, he said.

Regarding Netanyahu’s pause of the judicial overhaul, Pardo said: “This pause will only have accomplished something good if by pausing the incident [the judicial overhaul battle], it enables us to get somewhere. But that is not enough. The same night that the defense minister was fired, the defense establishment was surrounded by a vacuum.”

Also, he asked, “What is the significance that there is no letter of dismissal; that there is a minister who sits at his desk and makes decisions while the issue of a formal letter of dismissal hangs over his head?”

In addition, National Unity MK Gadi Eisenkot, a former IDF chief of staff, told the same conference that Netanyahu had undermined Israel’s relations with the US with his judicial overhaul and other policies.

US-Israel relations are critical

He emphasized that any daylight between Israel and the US must be immediately fixed to enable the Jewish state to cope with threats from Iran, Hezbollah, Palestinian terrorism and other challenges.

Eisenkot said government ministers should not attack the US or say things such as, “Israel can get along without you,” lest America’s billions in defense aid, intelligence sharing and invaluable diplomatic backing be put in jeopardy.

Earlier at the conference, Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel (Likud) called on all sides to calm down.

Israel’s political system must be reformed so that party leaders with large egos have less power, and there is more of a balance between the executive branch and the Knesset, she said.

The Knesset has lost most of its independent power, Gamliel said.

When members of the audience asked why she had not spoken out against the large egos of coalition party leaders who have acted divisively, she said she was giving internal criticism behind closed doors with the people who matter.

DHS heavily redacted Disinformation Board emails despite claiming agency had nothing to hide

After claiming the Disinformation Governance Board would be run in line with "best practices," DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is now shielding communications that may reveal its true purpose.

When the existence of the Disinformation Governance Board burst into public view, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said there was nothing sinister to hide and claimed the office was rooted in "best practices."

A year later, Mayorkas' department is refusing to let Americans see most of the legal justifications and talking points it created to defend the now-disbanded board from "blowback," FOIA documents showed.

More than 100 pages of internal communication between the board's former executive director, Nina Jankowicz, and her staff were released with heavy redactions to the conservative nonprofit Citizens United.

What little is visible makes clear that DHS underestimated the negative reaction the board would provoke and was scrambling to find ways to keep the story from being pushed by "hostile" news outlets.

In the FOIA emails, Jankowicz cited "blowback and abuse" after certain media outlets began describing the board as the "Ministry of Truth" as word spread about its formation.

"There is a fair possibility this could end up on a hostile TV network in the coming days," she wrote.

Some of the communications show the board's responses to direct questions posed in a letter from Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), such as what language in the Constitution allows DHS to create such a board and hire staff for it.

Other questions included which parts of DHS would be "responsible for monitoring and collecting data" on misinformation and what "specific actions" DHS intended to take to "counter misinformation." Each answer was redacted by the department.

Germany to massively increase military aid to Ukraine - Spiegel

Letter to Bundestag seeks €15 billion ($16.2 billion) over the coming years, citing Kiev’s battlefield losses

Heavy losses of equipment in battle mean that Ukraine’s military needs more tanks, artillery and air defenses, as well as maintenance for them, according to a letter from the German treasury to the parliament revealed by Der Spiegel on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner wrote to the Bundestag on Monday, and the parliamentary budget committee met on Tuesday in secret to consider his request, according to the German outlet. He is asking for €3.2 billion ($3.47 billion) more this year and another €8.8 billion ($9.54 billion) for “ongoing commitments,” on top of €2.2 billion ($2.39 billion) already spent on Ukraine.

“Due to the high material losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, new supplies of material are required,” the treasury wrote, further arguing that a number of procurement and maintenance contracts for “needs-based sustainable equipment” of Kiev’s military need to be concluded immediately.

The letter specifically says the Ukrainians need more air defense, armored tracked vehicles – including tanks – and ammunition for tanks and artillery. Supplying the weapons systems also creates a “follow-up obligation” to provide ammunition, service and maintenance, the treasury added.

The additional expenses are “objectively unavoidable,” Lindner argues, because “without ongoing support to Ukraine, there is a serious danger of it losing” in the conflict against Russia, “with unforeseeable consequences for peace in Europe.”

Even so, Lindner did not want to submit a supplementary budget request for this funding, but asked the parliamentarians to find unspent money in other departments, including the funds appropriate for dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Spiegel.

Asked about the Spiegel revelations on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Berlin’s decision to boost aid to Kiev “does not bode well.”

“Current relations between Russia and Germany leave much to be desired,” Peskov added. “Germany takes an active part in pumping up Ukraine with weapons, directly and indirectly increasing its level of involvement in the conflict.”

The Russian Defense Ministry estimated that the US and its allies had spent over $100 billion to prop up the Ukrainian military by the end of 2022. Multiple Western officials have publicly declared that Russia “must lose” or be “strategically defeated,” while insisting that their countries were not actually taking part in the conflict.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer still posting on TikTok despite state ban of app on official devices

Chinese-owned platform under mounting scrutiny amid fears app poses significant risks to national security, user data privacy, and teen mental health.

Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer regularly posts content to her popular account on embattled social media platform TikTok despite the state banning use of the app on official devices earlier this month.

Whitmer's "BigGretchWhitmer" account currently boasts 201,900 followers. Her recent posts include highlights from a past interview, personal promotions for her literacy initiatives, her views on gun violence prevention, and scenic footage of the state, among a wide range of other content.

Her activities have earned her a whopping 3.1 million likes on the platform.

TikTok has faced intense scrutiny as a potential security threat due in part to its parent company, the Beijing-based ByteDance, maintaining close ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

In banning the app's use on official devices, Michigan followed the lead of roughly half of the states as well as the federal government. President Joe Biden in late February ordered that the app be removed from federal devices within 30 days.

Despite mounting fears that the app poses significant risks to national security, user data privacy, and teen mental health, Whitmer remains adamant about using the platform. Michigan's ban exempted Whitmer's account, which acting state Chief Security Officer Jayson Cavendish told MLive was on a secure device that has never accessed the state network nor used its wi-fi.

The governor has asserted that the app is a widely used method of communication and that its popularity warrants its use for addressing the public directly.

"Whether we like it or not, that is a tool for disseminating important information," she told CNN's Jake Tapper last month. "And that's how we use it. We have it on one device that has no access to anything else because so many people get their information that way."

She is not alone in pointing to the app's pervasiveness in American society while arguing for its use. New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently joined the platform as federal lawmakers ramp up efforts to restrict it.

"The United States has never before banned a social media company from existence, from operating in our borders, and this is an app that has over 150 million Americans on it," she said in a recent post.

New bird flu passes to mammals and causes “zombie-like” behavior — infected animals have no fear of humans

According to the United States Geological Study (USGS), a new bird flu strain is spreading from wild birds to wild mammals, causing “zombie-like” animal behaviors. The infected mammals possess various neurological issues and have no fear of humans, the government study warns.

The first outbreaks were observed across Europe as early as October 2021. The outbreaks are coming from a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, which allegedly belongs to the Eurasian lineage, clade 2.3.4.4b. The strains were detected during wild bird surveillance in November 2021 and have spread rapidly across Newfoundland and Labrador Canada and the United States through wild bird reservoirs and through the domestic poultry supply, including both backyard flocks and birds in commercial poultry facilities.

The new strains have even passed over to various mammalian species — most predominantly the red fox. The sickness has also been detected in the Eurasian River otter, the Eurasian lynx, ferrets, European polecats, and stone martens captured throughout Europe. In May 2022, US and Canadian epidemiologists isolated the highly pathogenic avian influenza HfN1 in wild mammals. In the latest USGS study, epidemiologists detected HPAIv in 67 wild mammals across ten states. From April 1 to July 21, 2022, the researchers isolated infected animals from New York to Alaska, and many places in between, including North Dakota, Iowa, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Idaho, Michigan, and Minnesota. According to the study, the infected animals included 50 red foxes, six striped skunks, four raccoons, two bobcats, two Virginia opossums, one coyote, one fisher, and one grey fox. The mammalian species most likely to be infected is the red fox.

According to study co-author, Dr. Hon Ip, Diagnostic Virologist at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center: “The most likely cause of infection was from predation or scavenging of wild birds infected with HPAIv as wild birds are a component of the natural diet for many of these mammalian species.” According to genetic sequencing conducted on 48 of the wild mammals, the infections are confirmed to be crossing over from wild birds. The epidemiologists found no evidence of lateral transmission of HPAIv within wild populations of terrestrial mammalian species; however, there is experimental evidence that horizontal transmission of H5N1 HPAIv occurs in domestic cats and ferrets. Moreover, the authors of the study could not rule out the possibility of parent to offspring transmission of the virus.
