Kentucky Legislature overrides governor's veto of transgender care restrictions
The Senate voted 29-8 in favor of overriding the veto while the House did so by a 76-23 margin.
The Kentucky legislature on Wednesday overrode a veto from Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear, pushing through a bill restricting access to gender-related treatments and limiting use of bathrooms in schools.
The bill comes in the immediate aftermath of a mass shooting in Nashville, Tenn., in which a transgender individual killed three students and three faculty members at a Christian school.
The Senate voted 29-8 in favor of overriding the veto while the House did so by a 76-23 margin, the Associated Press reported.
"We cannot allow people to continue down the path of fantasy, to where theyâre going to end up 10, 20, 30 years down the road and find themselves miserable from decisions that they made when they were young," Republican Rep. Shane Baker said on Wednesday, per the outlet.
The bill bars minors from receiving certain gender-related treatments and requires students to use bathrooms in line with their biological sex rather than gender identities. It also restricts discussion of sexual topics in schools for students of all ages.
Numerous Republican-leaning states have pursued comparable legislation in recent months, with Tennessee doing so shortly before the violent episode in Nashville.

GOP Senators introduce legislation to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations
Senators behind this bill include Lindsey Graham, Mike Lee and Marsha Blackburn
GOP Senators including Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) introduced a bill on Wednesday to designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
According to Graham, the drug cartels control a large part of Mexico and that needs to be acknowledged.
"They are making billions of dollars sending fentanyl and illicit drugs into the United States where it is killing our citizens by the thousands," stated Graham, according to The Hill.
The senators are hopeful that if passed, this piece of legislation will allow America and Mexico to take stronger action against the cartels.
âWe will put the cartels in our crosshairs and go after those who provide material support to them, including the Chinese entities who send them chemicals to produce these poisons," Graham said, "The designation of Mexican drug cartels as FTOs is a first step in the major policy changes we need to combat this evil."
Other senators behind this bill include Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and John Kennedy (R-La.).
Polling indicates most Americans agree with the proposal.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang in Malaysia, Vietnam solidarity call as Beijing seeks to charm Southeast Asia
Foreign Minister Qin Gang underlines need for regional coordination to fend off geopolitical challenges as he meets Malaysian counterpart in Beijing
âChina and Vietnam are comrades plus brothersâ, Qin reminds Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in phone call
Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has called on his Malaysian and Vietnamese counterparts to help strengthen regional coordination in the face of geopolitical challenges, as Beijing steps up its diplomatic charm offensive in Southeast Asia.
Welcoming Malaysian Foreign Minister Zambry Abd Kadir to Beijing on Tuesday, Qin highlighted the role of China and Malaysia as âimportant emerging economies and progressive forces in the international arenaâ.
The two sides need to âdeepen cooperation and consolidate solidarity ⌠so as to address risks and challengesâ, Qin added, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry.
Qin also urged further efforts to broaden âhigh qualityâ cooperation, particularly in ânew energy vehiclesâ, digital economy, semiconductor manufacturing and agriculture.
âWe should strengthen strategic collaboration ⌠safeguard international fairness and justice, and work together to safeguard the long-term interests of the majority of developing countries and emerging economies,â he told Zambry in what was their first in-person meeting.
The same day, Qin held a phone call with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, when both sides agreed to push bilateral ties to a new level on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of their âcomprehensive strategic cooperative partnershipâ.
The two ministers pledged to âstrengthen strategic communication, consolidate political mutual trust and intensify interactions at all levels and in all fieldsâ, the Chinese ministry readout said.
The two sides will work together to keep up the momentum for further cooperation following the meeting in October between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vietnamese Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong in Beijing, Qin said.

Philippines arrests Chinese suspect over US$74 million worth of drugs stashed in tea bags
In one of the Philippinesâ largest drug busts in years, police seized over 500kg (1,100lbs) of drugs stashed in tea bags and arrested a Chinese suspect
President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr has vowed to press on with predecessor Rodrigo Duterteâs crackdown on illegal drugs but says he will focus on rehabilitation
Philippine police seized more than 500kg (1,102lbs) of suspected methamphetamine concealed in tea bags and arrested a suspected Chinese drug dealer in a northern mountain resort city, police officials said.
The drug seizure in Baguio city on Wednesday had an estimated street value of 4 billion pesos (US$74 million) and was one of the largest in recent years, officials said.
A drug syndicate apparently hid the suspected drugs, locally known as shabu, in Baguio, a popular tourism destination known for its mountain scenery and pine trees, and not in metropolitan Manila due to an ongoing anti-drugs crackdown in the capital region, Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos and police officials said.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr, who took office in June, has vowed to press on with his predecessorâs crackdown against illegal drugs, which left thousands of mostly petty drug suspects dead, but said it would be done differently and focus more on rehabilitating drug dependents.

âPatriot Act on Steroids:â Conservatives Slam RESTRICT Act on Social Media
The outrage over the draconian RESTRICT Act, marketed to the public as a âTikTok ban,â is rapidly rising.
The bill has been revealed as something far more expansive that a mere TikTok ban. It grants sweeping powers to the federal government to restrict the online activities of Americans, imposing heavy penalties on any citizen who circumvents it, including criminal fines of up to $1 million, jail sentences of up to 20 years, and the seizure and search of hardware and online accounts, including cryptocurrency accounts.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson eviscerated the bill in a segment this week, saying: âThis bill isnât about banning TikTok. Itâs never about what they say it is. Instead, this bill would give enormous and terrifying new powers to the federal government to punish American citizens and regulate how they communicate with one another.â
âSo you would be allowing the executive branch â the Biden administration â to regulate speech on the internet. And if you are somehow involved with, quote, a foreign adversary â letâs say you oppose the war against Russia â you go to prison for 20 years.â
âSo, this isnât about banning TikTok. This is about introducing flat-out totalitarianism into our system. Now, just because TikTok is so unappealing⌠that does not mean that the people trying to ban TikTok have your interests in mind.â
Donald Trump Jr., also slammed the bill.

Nikki Haley Blasts Biden for Interfering in Israeli Politics
Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley blasted President Joe Biden Wednesday for interfering in Israeli domestic politics, saying the U.S. would never tolerate the same.
Haley was referring to Bidenâs refusal to invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House, as he invited both of Netanyahuâs predecessors, in protest at the Israeli governmentâs ongoing judicial reforms.
The Biden administration has backed the oppositionâs protests against the reforms. Critics on the Israeli right note that Biden appears to be trying to oust Netanyahu at a delicate time, as Iran is nearing a nuclear weapon.
Israelâs judiciary, referred to as a âjuristocracyâ by critics, has assumed vast powers in recent decades, including not only the power to overturn legislation but also the power to control the appointment of judges to the bench.
Because most of the judges are left-wing, and from Israelâs secular, European elite, many Israelis on the right and from Middle Eastern or African backgrounds have come to resent the courtâs interference in government.
Netanyahu ran on a promise to reform the judiciary, and some of his proposals parallel U.S. law. In some ways the U.S. has even stronger checks and balances: Congress can eliminate most federal courts, for example.
Biden himself considered sweeping judicial reforms to install a left-wing Supreme Court by âpackingâ the Court with new seats that would be filled by liberal nominees. His White House launched a commission on the topic.
Haley, widely viewed as a strong advocate for the U.S.-Israel relationship during her tenure at the U.S., is the first presidential contender to criticize Biden for his stance against Netanyahu and the Israeli judicial reforms.
Former President Donald Trump has been quiet about the issue. Though he was arguably the most pro-Israel president in U.S. history, he has criticized Netanyahu for acknowledging Bidenâs victory in the 2022 election.
Florida Gov. Ron Desantis, another Republican contender, has yet to respond to Bidenâs attacks on Israel, but is due to travel to the region next month.
Haley is therefore the first major contender to comment on the crisis.

Albanese government introduces Voice to Parliament constitutional amendment bill as it faces growing legal backlash
The Albanese government has introduced legislation for its proposed Voice to Parliament constitutional amendment and referendum question amid continued backlash over the Prime Ministerâs draft wording.
Attorney General Mark Dreyfus has introduced the governmentâs Constitutional Alteration bill on the Voice to Parliament amid growing scrutiny over Laborâs proposals.
The bill, which was tabled shortly after 9am on Thursday, will legislate the referendum question and amendments agreed to by the First Nations Constitutional Working Group and cabinet.
The Parliament will then select 13 MPs and Senators â six Labor, four Liberal members and three crossbench members â to form the Joint Select Committee on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice Referendum.
Parliament will vote on the bill after the committee reports.
It is expected the committee will hand down its recommendations no later than May 15, with the Coalition likely to push the government on concerns its proposed amendments which leaves the door open to potential legal challenges by the body.
The opposition and legal experts have scrutinised the inclusion of executive government when referring to who the Voice may âmake representationsâ in the draft second clause.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has consistently argued the proposed third clause specifically references the âprimacy of parliamentâ in determining what the Voice could advise the government on.
But constitutional law experts have suggested the second clause determines the âscopeâ of what the body can make representations on.
âThat cannot be altered or limited by an act of parliament,â the University of Sydneyâs Professor Anne Twomey told The Australian.

Sydney man has $50k drained from ANZ bank account in just four minutes
The Sydneysider was shocked to uncover his bank account had been drained and has been battling the bank ever since.
A man from Sydney has been engaged in a battle with his bank for more than 15 months after he discovered that $50,000 had been emptied from his account.
Sam, who did not want his surname used, had set the money aside for âemergency circumstancesâ after accumulating the money over years.
Paul, his son-in-law, said he opened the savings account with ANZ and had only ever deposited $10 a month into it â never making a withdrawal.
âHe put in $10 a month like clockwork as the terms or conditions were he must deposit $10 to get bonus interest and must not withdraw any money,â he said.
But in August 2021 in just the space of minutes, Samâs account had almost $50,000 drained from it.
âFour minutes is all it took. It happened through BPAY and you canât limit withdrawals so itâs up to $75,000 â itâs a fraudsterâs paradise,â Paul said.
The first transaction to the new biller saw $19,900 stolen, while the second drained another $19,898 and the third saw $9899 moved out of his ANZ account.
But Sam, who is now aged 88, was in hospital with pneumonia at the time and didnât realise his money had been stolen until October
âWhen he got out of hospital in October, he logged in and he just saw that what used to be $58,000 was gone and they left him with $8000 â I donât know why â and as soon as he saw that he went off to a bank branch and reported it,â Paul said.
Sam had worked as an engineer across his life and had only retired at 80, he added.
The discovery left Sam feeling distressed.
âHe was quite shocked it happened to him and I think his words were âI thought ANZ were looking after and protecting my moneyâ ⌠He was still ill too as well as he was suffering the after effects of pneumonia,â he said.
