Braddock Mayor and former Senate candidate John Fetterman is among a group of eight mayors who announced their support for South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s bid to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee today.
“As a fellow mayor of an industrial belt town, I greatly respect the work Mayor Pete has done in turning around South Bend,” Mr. Fetterman said in a statement released by Mr. Buttigieg’s supporters Monday morning. “I’ve also admired how he has campaigned on hardcore progressive values and won races in a part of the country that a lot of Democrats in D.C. have written off. Now more than ever we need a DNC Chair who understands how important it is to campaign in towns and cities all across the country.”
Mr. Fetterman will not be voting when DNC members choose their chair in Atlanta this weekend. And Mr. Buttigieg is considered a dark-horse candidate behind Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison and Tom Perez, a former Cabinet secretary for President Barack Obama who has received the backing from many others in the party establishment.
Still, the announcement may attract some attention: Mr. Fetterman was a widely covered Senate candidate and an early champion of Bernie Sanders, who backs Mr. Ellison.
Mr. Fetterman said he found the South Bend mayor -— who among other things is a gay elected official in a state that gave America religious conservative Vice President Mike Pence — “a compelling guy.” (Mr. Buttigieg has an Ivy League pedigree in a city with roots in manufacturing and, as the home of Notre Dame, higher education alike.)
More importantly, though, Mr. Fetterman told the Post-Gazette that Mr. Buttigieg could be “a fusion candidate that can help heal our party. Without that, we’ll have Sanders-Clinton proxy wars til 2020 and four more years of Trump.” Those divisions, which have been on display during the DNC contest, are “the biggest threat to our party,” he said.
Mr. Fetterman’s statement also reflects the concern, “There's been a lot of talk about the 2016 campaign and what various factions of our party could have done differently,” it reads. “I believe we need to move beyond the 2016 campaign and come together with new leadership to give our party a fresh start.”
It’s not the first time that Mr. Fetterman has urged Democrats to transcend their differences. During the 2016 election, he urged fellow Sanders backers to support Hillary Clinton in November. And though he lost his own Senate primary to Democrat Katie McGinty, he became an effective surrogate for her campaign in the general election.
Neither Ms. McGinty nor Ms. Clinton carried Pennsylvania. But perhaps it’s a reflection of Mr. Buttigieg’s bridge-building appeal that he’s also being backed by another Pennsylvania pol: former Gov. Ed Rendell, a longtime hard-core Clinton-supporter who, as a former mayor of Philadelphia, represents exactly the kind of urban voter that pundits say has been over-represented in Democratic policy.
In a statement of his own last week, Mr. Rendell struck notes similar to those of Mr. Fetterman. While he praised both Mr. Ellison and Mr. Perez, the former governor hailed Mr. Buttigieg as “our best choice to offer new energy that our party needs and … the best possible messenger to help us bring back working Democrats who voted for Donald Trump.”

''Mayors endorse Buttigieg for DNC chair''

SOUTH BEND — Eight U.S. mayors have endorsed Pete Buttigieg for chair of the Democratic National Committee, citing his record as mayor of South Bend, his “outside-the-Beltway” perspective and his ability to unite the party and communicate to both “red” and “blue” communities.
''The list comprises: Mitch Landrieu (New Orleans); Steven Adler (Austin, Tex.); Javier Gonzeles (Sante Fe, N.M.); John Fetterman (Braddock, Penn.); Settie Warren (Newton, Mass.); Nan Whaley (Dayton, Ohio); Karen Freeman-Wilson (Gary, Ind.); and Josh Maxwell (Downington, Penn.).''
Buttigieg announced his candidacy in January. Members will vote on a new party leader Saturday in Atlanta.
Aside from various mayors, the South Bend native and former Rhode’s Scholar has been endorsed by three former DNC chairs, the most of any candidate in the race, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and former White House Chief of Staff William Daley, among others.
Still, he remains a longshot to win the office, with former Obama Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison widely seen as the frontrunners.
Buttigieg has said he would resign as mayor of South Bend if elected.
