Two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) crashed in Trigg County, Kentucky, at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from Fort Campbell.

Crewmembers were flying “during a routine training mission when the incident occurred. The status of the crew members are unknown at this time. The command is currently focused on caring for the servicemembers and their families,” according to a statement on the base’s Facebook page.

The crash is expected to result in fatalities, according to Gov. Andy Beshear, as first responders are at the scene. Trigg County is located just north of the Kentucky-Tennessee state border.

“We’ve got some tough news out of Fort Campbell, with early reports of a helicopter crash and fatalities are expected,” Beshear said on Twitter. “Please pray for all those affected.”

A spokesperson with the Kentucky State Police said they were assisting Fort Campbell authorities after an “aircraft incident” in a rural area.

The agency was contacted around 10:15 p.m. local time, Kentucky State Police Post 1 spokesperson Trooper Sarah Burgess said, and “numerous agencies” were assisting. Burgess described the area as a field and wooded.

No residential areas are affected by the incident, she said.

U.S. Army officials at Fort Campbell said in a statement that two 101st Airborne HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters crashed during a training mission on Wednesday in Trigg County.

''The crash occurred on Wednesday night at about 9:35 p.m. There are reportedly three separate scenes located off Bobby Light Road and Lancaster Road near US 68. East Golden Pond firefighters responded to put out fires at the sites.''

WKDZ said there are unconfirmed reports there could be as many as nine people killed in the incident. They said officials from Fort Campbell got to the scenes about an hour after the crash to begin their investigation. They said Trigg County Coroner John Mark Vinson, along with an Army soldier on the scene, there were confirmed multiple fatalities.

The Army statement did not give information about the status of the crews but said their focus was on caring for the servicemembers and their families. They said that more information would be released as it became available.

''Trigg County Jailer James Hughes reportedly lives nearby and heard what sounded like a collision. Others who live in the area indicated that helicopters have been flying over the area for the last several nights.''

''Military: Human error caused deadly Mendon chopper crash ''

The New York Army National Guard UH-60 medical evacuation helicopter — also known as a Black Hawk — crashed in a nose-down position in a field near West Bloomfield Road during the routine training mission around 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 20, 2021. New York Army National Guard officials say human error caused the military helicopter crash that killed three soldiers in Mendon earlier this year.

Col. Richard Goldenberg, public affairs officer for the New York National Guard, said that a "procedural error" while rehearsing an emergency training maneuver caused the fatal Jan. 20 crash. Specifically, he said, actions taken by the crew during training "put the aircraft in a position where it became unrecoverable." It was, he said, an in-flight emergency related to the controls of the aircraft itself.

The New York Army National Guard UH-60 medical evacuation helicopter — also known as a Black Hawk — crashed in a nose-down position in a field near West Bloomfield Road during the routine training mission.

Killed were all three soldiers on board, chief warrant officers Steven Skoda and Daniel Prial, both of Rochester, and Christian Koch of Honeoye Falls.

As a result of the investigation, Goldenberg said, the U.S. Army has modified its training procedure and has restricted practicing that specific emergency maneuver to flight simulators only.

Throughout a months-long investigation, Army investigators evaluated the aircraft itself, reviewed its maintenance records, training flight preparations and standards, the aircraft flight recorder and all the details of the Army Readiness Center's research to determine the cause of the crash, Goldenberg said.

The helicopter was based at the Army Aviation Support Facility at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. This is where Skoda, Prial and Koch all worked full-time, conducting aircraft maintenance, training and flight operations.

Over the last month, Army National Guard officials notified the pilots' families of the findings.

"Military aviation is inherently risky due to the complex flying environments that our pilots and crews have to prepare for," Goldenberg said, adding that Skoda, Koch and Prial together had more than 50 years of flight experience. "It can also be an unforgiving environment, with life and death decisions and actions, no matter the circumstance, whether mechanical, weather or crew related."

"Chief Warrant Officers Skoda, Koch and Prial were doing what they loved and what they had committed their military careers to – flying," Goldenberg said.

In March, the company resumed flight operations and training from the Army Aviation Support Facility.

Here's more about the three soldiers killed:
