US VP unveils $1 billion for African women’s empowerment
The United States Vice President Kamala Harris announced a more than $1 billion initiative to improve women’s economic empowerment in Africa on Wednesday at the end of the first leg of a three-nation trip to the continent.
Harris’ office revealed the programme, a mixture of US government funding and private sector commitments, while in Ghana where she was visiting before travelling to Tanzania and Zambia.
The tour follows up on a December summit held by President Joe Biden in Washington with African leaders as theUS seeks to balance the growing influence of China and Russiaon the continent.

Russia detains American journalist and accuses him of espionage
The security service said Gershkovich, 32, was "acting on the instructions of the American side, carried out the collection of information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex," adding that the journalist was detained "while trying to obtain secret information," per Meduza.
The news outlet reported that the criminal case launched against Gershkovich is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Gershkovich had reportedly traveled to Yekaterinburg, deep into Russian territory and about 900 miles east of Moscow, to report on the Wagner Group.
