Jean-Pierre: This espionage charges [Evan Gershkovich] are ridiculous. The targeting of American citizens by Russian government is unacceptable.

Jean-Pierre: Republicans owe answers to the American people about why they won't protect our kids. They owe answers to the Nashville families who lost their three kids. They owe answers to Uvalde, the parents of Uvalde. They owe answers to the people in Buffalo.

Jean-Pierre: This is incredibly sadly common for Russia to detain Americans…it is not safe for Americans in Russia. It is a Level 4…it is not safe to be in Russia or to travel in Russia.

Reporter: Can you say decoratively that Gershkovich never worked for, and does not work for the United States government?

Jean-Pierre: The charge of espionage is ridiculous. That is not accurate, and we find that incredibly ridiculous.

Reporter: Has he ever worked for the United States government, or does he right now in any form?
