I think the guidstones were placed because they know that mass extinction events happen on a regular cycle their are many graphs that prove it

we are in fact over due for the next event and they have been preparing for it, underground bunkers, seed vaults, stock piles of weapons and ammo, my guess is the guidstone are for the survivors of the next event
