In fact, the word schild in German or shield in English originate from a word meaning split, as in splitting a board off a log. It did not originally have any connection to the meaning "protect". That's because, these splits of would were used for painting SIGNS or RUNES which were partly magic, and partly identification of your clan. So when warriors went into battle, they carried these splits of wood with their clan sign on them to identify themselves so their friends would not accidentally stab them in the battler. The shielding bit came later.
Up to the beginning of the firearms era, the word schild or shield retained its meaning of sign, because the coat of arms was a very important sign. It marked the dominion of your lord, it showed your loyalty to your lord, etc.
So when the Bauer family changed their surname because of the RED SIGN painted on their house, Rothschild seemed to be the right word. The did have a six pointed star painted in red, and they did intend to start a dynasty so they needed a distinctive coat of arms.
