As an addendum, I went to a city in the South of Brazil once and perceived that the local population were not speaking Portuguese. It kinda sounded like German, but not quite. I later learnt it was a German dialect from a small region in Germany that is no longer spoken there, but was still flourishing in Brazil. As a further aside, my ex father-in-law only learnt to speak Portuguese after he went to school as the language he spoke at home was German!
