I don't know why a criminal that didn't want to get caught, would willingly bring the brightest, noisiest light source out to a railroad track behind some dude's house who was SO observant that he knew something was wrong just by listening to how the train was passing over the track.

Asked my dad about this, he was a track inspector for 30 years; and he said it looked like a broken rail.
