The "knitting" reference is a literary reference to Charles Dickens' masterpiece A Tale of Two Cities, about the French Revolution of 1789.
Chapter 15 is titled "Knitting" - where character Madame DeFarge is knitting a list of the names of French Aristocracy to capture and kill.
