White House Hosts Roundtable On ‘Affirming Transgender Kids’

Senior officials in the Biden administration hosted a roundtable at the White House about “affirming transgender kids” last week on “Transgender Day of Visibility.”

United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Susan Rice hosted a number of “transgender kids and their parents” on Friday to discuss efforts in some states to ban so-called sex change surgeries for minors. Attendees discussed the “joys, hopes, and challenges” associated with their identities.

“As one round table participant shared, it feels scary when the politicians elected to represent you don’t care about your wellbeing,” a readout of the meeting from the White House stated. “Families participating in today’s roundtable also highlighted that transgender kids can thrive when parents love and affirm their transgender children, and when transgender kids have access to the support they need at school and in their communities.”

Rice and Murthy in response reiterated the Biden administration’s commitment to “standing up for the rights of transgender kids and their parents, and to challenging state laws that harm transgender kids,” as well as thanked the families “for their unwavering advocacy and bravery in challenging these discriminatory laws.”

Officials such as Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) have passed or enacted bans on child sex change treatments and procedures. The readout from the White House voiced opposition to similar legislative proposals in Arizona, Texas, and Virginia.

The roundtable hosted by the Biden administration occurred days after a 28-year-old woman who identified as a man killed three children and three adults last week at The Covenant School, a ministry of the conservative evangelical Covenant Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee. The attack came weeks after Gov. Bill Lee (R-TN) endorsed legislation that bans sex change procedures, such as mastectomies for girls who believe they are boys, as well as hormones and puberty blockers purporting to transition a child to the opposite sex. Another bill signed by Lee prohibits sexually suggestive drag shows in public or near children.

The industry surrounding transgender surgeries is expected to reach a $5 billion valuation by the end of the decade, according to a recent report from Grand View Research. While insurance companies such as Aetna and Unicare may cover some components of sex reassignment surgeries, including hysterectomies and ovariectomies, Grand View Research said that “government support is also driving the market” through Medicare coverage.

The White House has received criticism for neglecting to mention that the motive behind the Nashville massacre appears to have been centered on the victims’ theologically conservative Christian faith. Senior administration officials have nevertheless been vocal in their support for “Transgender Day of Visibility” and used the occasion to claim that those claiming to be a member of the opposite sex are “under attack” in the United States.

“Since President Biden’s first day in office, the administration has taken historic steps to advance equality, dignity, and safety for transgender Americans, and he is the first President in history to discuss the importance of expanding equality and combating attacks on the rights of transgender Americans in every State of the Union or joint session of Congress address,” a statement from the White House noted. “While transgender Americans have an unwavering champion in the President, conservative politicians have advanced hundreds of anti-transgender laws in states across the country so far this year, putting the fundamental rights and freedoms of trans Americans at risk.”

Fmr Chief of Staff to Larry Hogan wanted as fugitive dies in shootout with the FBI outside Nashville

McGrath was indicted in 2021 after being accused of stealing over $275,000 from the state government, falsifying documents, and other criminal activity.

Roy McGrath, the fugitive ex-chief of staff for former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, died of a gunshot wound at a Tennessee hospital Monday night after a confrontation with FBI agents.

His attorney Joseph Murtha said in a statement, "It is a tragic ending to the past three weeks of uncertainty. I think it is important for me to stress that Roy never waivered about his innocence."

According to FOX 5, McGrath, 53, was located by agents Monday at a shopping center in the 10700 block of Kingston Pike at Lovell Road in Knoxville at approximately 6:30 pm. He was shot and wounded during the arrest and then taken to the hospital. It remains unclear if the FBI agents shot McGrath or if he shot himself.

It has not yet been revealed how authorities located McGrath.

Jon Housley told the Baltimore Banner that as he was leaving a Gold’s Gym around 6:45 pm, he saw police vehicles around a white GMC Yukon SUV.

Hosley said both side windows of the Yukon had been shot out and that he saw a man being taken out of the SUV and put onto a stretcher, with a sheet pulled up to his neck, and that there was blood on the ground.

McGrath was indicted in October 2021 after being accused of stealing over $275,000 from the state government, falsifying documents, and other criminal activity. He was also wanted on charges of failure to appear after missing his federal fraud trial. He has been on the run since March 13 and the FBI was offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

McGrath had resigned as Hogan’s chief of staff after an investigation revealed McGrath had profited by defrauding the government. According to prosecutors, McGrath used money from environmental services to pay off a personal pledge to an art museum; had the environmental service improperly pay for a course at Harvard University; misled environmental service employees to pay him severance; claimed on timecards he was working when he was really on vacation and faked a memo that showed Hogan approved of the severance payment.

US Magistrate Judge Thomas M. DiGirolamo approved pretrial release for McGrath on the condition that he surrender his passport and report on a regular basis to the court. McGrath was permitted to travel if approved by the court and could not possess a firearm.

Last month, a self-published e-book titled “Betrayed: The True Story of Roy McGrath” went on sale by an unknown author who gave the name “Ryan C. Cooper” and claimed the book was based on McGrath’s manuscript and interviews.

The book was Number 4 among Amazon’s 100 bestsellers in “Political Commentary & Opinion” and a sequel published online last week described recounted McGrath’s tenure at the Maryland Environmental Service. Lawyers have previously said that the book could be submitted as evidence at trial.

Civilians killed in Israeli strikes – media

The casualties were reported just one day after Damascus said five soldiers were wounded in another attack

Two civilians were killed in an Israeli air raid targeting Syria’s capital, state media reported, noting that missiles also struck the country’s southern region. The assault came amid a flurry of similar strikes in recent days, which left several Syrians injured and two Iranian soldiers dead.

Missiles fired from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights hit Damascus and other areas in the south early on Tuesday morning, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), which cited an unnamed military source.

In addition to the two civilians killed, the attack also resulted in “material damage” in Damascus, the source said, adding that Syrian air defenses intercepted most of the incoming missiles.

The latest attack follows several days of bombing in Damascus and its surrounding countryside, as well as in Homs, where five Syrian soldiers were injured in airstrikes on Sunday. Another air raid on Friday killed a military adviser from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which Tehran condemned as a “criminal” act that would not go “unanswered.” An IRGC officer was also killed in yet another missile strike last week, all of which were deemed “Israeli aggression” by officials in Damascus.

Just hours after Sunday’s strikes targeting Homs, the Israeli military said it detected an “aircraft” which crossed into its airspace from Syria. Fighter jets and helicopters were deployed to intercept the unidentified craft, which an Israeli military source later claimed was an “Iranian drone,” noting it was brought down with “electronic warfare.”

Though the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rarely confirms operations in Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously acknowledged “hundreds” of strikes on the country over the years, while officials have frequently warned of the presence of Iranian-backed militants there. Following reports of the air raid on Sunday, Netanyahu told lawmakers that Israel was “exacting a heavy price from terrorist-supporting regimes” beyond its borders, but did not elaborate.

Damascus has repeatedly protested the attacks as acts of aggression under international law, and while the United Nations urged Israel to “spare civilians and civilian objects in the conduct of hostilities” after a strike on the Aleppo airport last month, the operations appear to have only escalated since.
