EU plan for Ukraine ammunition stuck on details – Politico

Diplomats are still working out how to supply Kiev with artillery, andwho will pocket the profits

The “historic” agreement to deliver two billion euros ($2.14 billion) worth of artillery ammunition to the Ukrainian military is still being worked out, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing diplomats involved in the negotiations. Concerns over who will get the money are reportedly the main bone of contention.

The plan, unveiled on March 20, envisioned the delivery ofone million 155mm shells to Ukraineover the next 12 months. A package of one billion euros was earmarked for compensating EU members who would dip into their own stockpiles, and another billion for getting new shells made by military contractors, with orders organized and fast-tracked by the EU Defence Agency.

The problem now is figuring outwhich contractors, according to the pro-NATO outlet. (MIC will fight to the death for the profit of death!)

France is reportedly insisting thatonly EU companiesshould be considered, but there is legal uncertainty as to who actually qualifies as an EU company. Greece and Cyprus are in alignment with the French position, which diplomats have attributed to a desire to avoid giving orders to Türkiye.

Meanwhile, the European Commission also needs to “map out the capacity” of the bloc’s defense industry before finalizing the deal, as expanding production may be easier said than done.

EU ambassadors who met on Wednesday weren’t able to make significant progress, several diplomats with knowledge of the negotiations told Politico. They did manage to finalize the text of the agreement to collect ammunition donations, however, which should be published next week.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had proposed the ammunition plan, arguing in February that it was the most important issue. “If we fail on that, the result of the war is in danger,” he said at the time.

The US, EU and NATO have all insistedthey were not participantsin the conflict, while also arguing that Ukraine must win andRussia “must lose.” Moscow has repeatedly warned the West to stop “stuffing” Kiev with arms and ammunition, arguing that they are only delaying the inevitable while risking open confrontation.

Russia has already increased its own ammunition production, tripling the number of shells the US and EU plan to supply Kievover a year-long period, President Vladimir Putin said last week.

Finland Officially Joins NATO Creating the Largest NATO Land Border Directly Attached to Russia

April 4, 2023 | Sundance |

CONTEXT:There is no currently visible outcome where the Build Back Bettercollective western global alliance energy policycan succeed without escalating to a direct NATOwar against Russia.

The economic outcomes of the BBB agenda are currently being felt via western, energy driven, supply side inflation. The monetary countermeasures to that inflationary damage, raising central bank interest rates, creates instability in finance and subsequent banking collapse.

Simultaneous to the ‘western’ central bank intervention, the BRICS alliance members are withdrawing from dollar dependency as a trade mechanism. When all thoseunneeded dollars return home, the dollar value collapses– and all western economies attached to the dollar as a trade currency collapse along with it.

TheWestern bankers need a warto generate the industrial economic activity that uses the returning dollars. Unless and until the dollar is digitized, there is no currently visible outcome where the Build Back Better agenda is not dependent on an expanded war with Russia.

(Via Axios) – Finland became the 31st member of NATO on Tuesday — a once-unthinkable step that significantly changes the security landscape in Europe.

Why it matters:Finland’s membership more than doubles NATO’s borders with Russiaand formally ends Helsinki’s decades of official nonalignment. It’s also a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin who, in launching the Russian invasion of Ukraine, vowed to block the alliance’s eastward expansion. It’s the alliance’s ninth enlargement since its founding in 1949.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg sent a message to Moscow while officially welcoming Finland into the alliance: “President Putin wanted to slam NATO’s door shut. Today we showed the world that he failed, that aggression and intimidation do not work. Instead of less NATO, he has achieved the opposite: more NATO. And our door remains firmly open.”

Finland President Sauli Niinistö said it was a “great day for Finland” but also an important day for the security and the stability of the alliance.

[…] Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov earlier Tuesday called Finland’s NATO accession an “encroachment on Russia’s security” that would requireRussia to take unspecified countermeasures.

Putin had previously said that Russia had no “territorial differences” with Finland or Sweden, so it was “up to them” whether they joined — but Russia would respond to any deployments of NATO military units or infrastructure to their territories.

The Russian embassy in Sweden issued an even more pointed warning last week, saying on Facebook that any “new members of the enemy block will become alegitimate target” of “Russia’s retaliatory measures,” including those of military nature. (read more)

(I can hear it now when US and EU complain, Russia says, “what did you expect we’ve been telling since 1991 when Bush agreed not to encroach on our borders?”

Ukraine is targeting Russian civilian satellites – Moscow

Kiev and “a number of foreign states” are trying to tamper with means of communication, the foreign ministry has said

Ukraine has been trying to disrupt Russian civilian communication satellites, the foreign ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday, adding thatunspecified foreign stateswere aiding Kiev in the effort.

“The Kiev regime, with the participation of specialists from a number of foreign states, is attempting to interfere with Russian civilian communication satellites. This is anoutrageous violation of international law,” the ministry said, warning that Moscow was in its full right to “respond appropriately” and possesses all the “necessary capabilities” to do so.

It was not immediately clear how precisely Kiev had tried to disrupt the satellites, as the ministry did not elaborate on the matter any further.Russia has repeatedly experienced disruptionsof TV broadcasts during the ongoing hostilities with Ukraine. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky briefly appeared on TV in southwest Russia back in January, with Belgorod authorities acknowledging the disruption affected satellite broadcasts.AD MORE: Zelensky appears on Russian TV

The other side has been experiencing similar disruptionsas well, with arguably the most notable one occurring last June, when two Ukrainian sports channels showed an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin instead of a World Cup football match.

Western governments and private companies have provided Ukraine with satellite coverage for months. Most notably, the Starlink satellites operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX have become important tools for the Ukrainian troops in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Back in October, Russian diplomats warned that such satellites may end up becoming alegitimate military target.

“We are talking about the US and its allies using civil infrastructure components in space, including commercial ones, in armed conflicts,”Konstantin Vorontsov, the deputy head of thenon-proliferation and arms controldepartment at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said at the time.

Responding to Vorontsov’s remarks, US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby warned that Washington would “hold Russia accountablefor any such attack, should it occur.” (Kirby really? That is so weak. Oh yeah, you meant it that way.)
