Democracy vs Republic
The terms "democracy" and "republic" essentially mean the same thing.
"Democracy" comes from Attic Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratíā), from δῆμος (dêmos) "common people," κράτος (krátos) "power," and -ία, an abstract noun forming suffix. So "democracy" literally means "power of the people."
"Republic" comes from Latin rēs pūblica, rēs literally meaning "thing," but also "issue," "affair," and "state." Pūblica means "public," or more literally, "of the people." Thus "republic" means "issue of the people," or "state of the people."
