type two dashes with no spaces
type three.
try combos. five dashes in a row creates an emdash and an endash. its on purpose.

probably more than one reason but imagine this - you have a password with several dash combos in a row. it gets posted to a Brazilian basket weaving forum.
can anyone actually decipher it?
