German Police Issue Warning as Toxic Chemical Fire Breaks Out in Hamburg

Police warned people in Hamburg, Germany, to close their windows early Sunday after a large fire that engulfed several warehouses sent black, chemical-laden smoke drifting over the city.

German news agency dpa said the fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. in the Rothenburgsort district, located in the eastern part of Germany’s second-largest city. The smoke drifted from there toward the city center, halting long-distance trains between Hamburg and Berlin and other cities.

A public safety alert conveyed through a mobile phone app advised people in Hamburg to close windows, turn off ventilation and air conditioning, and to avoid the area. No injuries were reported.

Public broadcaster NDR said the fire involved containers with hydrogen sulfide, a toxic and foul-smelling substance, forcing firefighters and police officers in the area to wear breathing apparatus.

Ukrainian president Zelenskyy just met virtually with Murphy, other U.S. governors

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and more than two dozen other U.S. governors spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy via video conference Tuesday to discuss the country’s ongoing war with Russia — now more than a year old — and pledge bipartisan support.

No video from the virtual meeting was released, but the event’s organizer, the National Governors Association, which Murphy chairs, provided comments Zelenskyy made during the call. It comes as some Republican officials have urged President Joe Biden’s administration to curtail sending U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian families are “torn by the war” and asked the governors to ponder what may happen if this “spreads further across Europe, through the cities and lands of your allies.”

“Ukraine is capable of preventing the expansion of the war,” he said, according to the NGA. “We are able to defeat Russia on our land. That is why we ask the USA for support, for weapons and finances.”

Zelensky also asked America to “stand with us” during Ukraine’s reconstruction, which he said will be the “the largest economic project in Europe in the lifetime of several generations.”

“Thank you, America, for the help that lets us win,” Zelenskyy added.

Murphy, a Democrat, said during a virtual news conference afterwards that Zelenskyy “made the point this isn’t just a Ukraine war” but an “existential threat to our freedoms everywhere, to our values everywhere” and added “we’re fighting so you guys don’t have to fight.”

“We will not leave the people of Ukraine in their time of need,” Murphy added in a tweet.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican who serves as NGA vice chair under Murphy, said “it’s easy to forget what’s actually happening over there” and this call was a “reminder to all of us on the terror that’s being inflicted on millions of innocent people.”

Asked how he feels about fellow Republicans who want to scale back or stop American aid to Ukraine, Cox said it’s a “false narrative” that it’s “a blank check or nothing” and stressed we “should always be very careful” about how the nation spends its tax dollars. But, he added, there is a “very unified front” among governors and many Republicans.

Much of the U.S.’s support to Ukraine comes from the federal government, which has sent more than $46 billion in military aid to the country during the war. America has also accepted more than 271,000 Ukrainian refugees.

Murphy said states have also sent a “huge amount” of help. That, the NGA said, includes deploying National Guard members, partnering with charitable organizations to send humanitarian aid, donating supplies from law enforcement, banning the sale of Russian products, and barring state governments from doing business with companies that have tied to Russia (as New Jersey has).

The New Jersey National Guard has sent equipment to the U.S. Army to help support allies. Meanwhile, nearly 1,500 Ukrainians have settled in New Jersey, state figures show.

In addition, Murphy said leaders use their “bully pulpits” to “remind our citizens of the importance and why we’re in this fight, amplifying the need to be unwavering in our support.”

Murphy, a former U.S. ambassador to Germany, has been a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has referred to Putin as a “thug” and often wears a Ukrainian flag pin on the lapel of his suits.

The governor — considered a potential 2024 presidential candidate — noted Tuesday he also made a surprise, “lightning” visit to Ukraine last month to meet with local leaders and refugees ahead of a visit to Germany for a global security conference.

Murphy was asked Tuesday if he’d be open to using Fort Dix in New Jersey to train Ukrainian soldiers.

“I’m not sure I’ve got an explicit answer to that,” he said, adding that some wounded Ukrainian soldiers have been getting treatment in the state.

Cox also said Russia poses a threat to other European countries and America’s NATO allies, which would “lead us into a much darker or dangerous place.”

Asked if the effort to help Ukraine detracts from the U.S.’s effort to deter threats from China, Murphy said: “Absolutely not.”

“To the contrary,” he said. “This is showing our will to defend freedom, to defend democracy. I think this is a holy cow moment for everyone who’s watching this, including the Chinese.”

Top cop admits footage of police beating Palestinians in al-Aqsa doesn’t look good

Senior official reportedly says police had no choice but to enter mosque after Muslims stockpiled weapons inside but that officers overreacted and footage sparked PR nightmare

Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai appears to admit that officers should not have beaten apprehended Palestinians in the al-Aqsa Mosque last week.

In a Kan public broadcaster interview, Shabtai defends the decision by police to enter the mosque, and says additional force was necessary in order to subdue the roughly 400 rioters who had barricaded themselves inside the mosque with weapons.

“Am I happy with the pictures that came out of there? No,” Shabtai admits. “We’re probing the incident and will learn from it.”

Still, he insists that the officers were not the ones who desecrated the holy site, as opposed to the minority of Palestinian rioters.

Switzerland not recommending COVID-19 vaccine, including for high-risk individuals

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still recommending for children as young as 6 months to "stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines."

Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health said no COVID-19 vaccination is recommended this spring/summer season, including for people at high risk of becoming seriously sick from the virus.

"Nearly everyone in Switzerland has been vaccinated and/or contracted and recovered from COVID-19. Their immune system has therefore been exposed to the coronavirus," the Swiss health agency said.

Health officials predicted that the virus will circulate less this summer and cause "rather mild illness."

The vaccination recommendation will be evaluated for the fall and updated as needed.

People who are considered to be high-risk, including those over the age of 65, those with a chronic condition and pregnant women, are able to receive a vaccination after consulting with their doctors, but the vaccine is "not currently recommended," Swiss officials said.

Barr says US potentially has ‘very good evidence’ Trump obstructed justice in classified documents case

Former Attorney General Bill Barr said Sunday that investigators probing the potential mishandling of classified documents by former President Trump likely have “very good evidence” that Trump attempted to keep authorities from obtaining the materials after he left the White House.

The case against Trump, Barr said, comes down to the matter of how long it took the government to get the materials back, which will play a significant role.

“He had no claim to those documents, especially the classified documents. They belonged to the government. And so, I think he was jerking the government around. And they subpoenaed it. And they tried to jawbone him into delivering documents,” Barr said.

“But the government is investigating the extent to which games were played and there was obstruction in keeping documents from them. And I think that’s a serious potential case. I think they probably have some very good evidence there.”

Barr reiterated Sunday that of all the legal woes facing Trump, the classified documents probe was the one to “be most concerned about.”

Barr said he believed that before classified documents were discovered at the homes of President Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence that Trump was likely to be indicted in that matter.

“And I still think there’s a very good chance of that because — and I think it depends on how sensitive the documents were, but also what evidence they have of obstruction and games-playing by the president and the — and whether he directed people to lie or gave them information that was deceitful to pass onto the government,” Barr said.

Trump’s handling of classified documents is under investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith. The probe opened up following the August 2022 search of Trump’s Florida Mar-a-Lago resort.

In the aftermath of the search, many Republicans quickly blasted federal law enforcement officials, arguing the search was an unprecedented attack on a former president and saying it signaled the politicization of the justice system. Barr pushed back against such claims.

CDC Partners With 'Social And Behavior Change' Initiative To Silence Vaccine Hesitancy

Dr. Mary Talley Bowden, a Stanford-educated ear, nose, and throat doctor, isn’t afraid to voice her beliefs. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she repeatedly used her platform on Twitter and TikTok to question the vaccines, promote ivermectin as a treatment, and call out pharmacists for refusing to dispense it.

But her efforts resulted in significant backlash. On Nov. 7, 2021, Dr. Danielle Jones, an OBGYN who posts under the handle @MamaDoctorJones on YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter—and has millions of followers—put out a video accusing Bowden of “grifting,” rejecting science, and profiting from those who questioned the vaccine.

The video received thousands of comments, including from Team Halo members, Dr. Zachary Rubin, a pediatrician, and Christina Kim, an oncology nurse practitioner. Team Halo is a social media influencer campaign formed as part of the United Nations Verified initiative and the Vaccine Confidence Project to increase vaccine uptake.

“That doc is problematic,” Rubin wrote. Kim followed with, “Wow. That ‘doctor’ should have her license revoked.”
