Pentagon leak exposes NATO special forces in Ukraine

One document shows almost 100 personnel,half of them British, deployed in the country

One of classified US military documents that has made its way online shows the presence of 97 NATO special forces operators in Ukraine as of March 1, 2023, of which 50 were British, multiple UK outlets reported on Tuesday.

The Guardian said it had seen two files, dated late February and early March, that listed 50 British special operatives as being active in Ukraine. TheUS had 14 special operativesin the country, andFrance another 15.

The documents were labeled “secret” and were prepared for senior US defense officials, according to the outlet. The daily updates contained information about NATO military operations, logistics, weapons deliveries and training of Ukrainian troops.

Another UK outlet, Declassified, noted that the14 US special operatorswere among the 29 Pentagon personnel present in Ukraine, which included the Marine security detachment at the US embassy in Kiev and military attaches. Another71 State Department personnelwere in the country as well, amounting to a total of100 Americans.

Declassified also noted that the slide was marked “not releasable to foreign nationals.”

While US special operators come from two units,Navy SEALs and the Army’s Delta Force, the British definition extends beyond the Special Air Service (SAS) to paratroopers, marines, and other units. The prime minister isnot obligated to brief the Parliamenton their deployment.

Dozens of classified US military documents have been discovered online over the past week, attracting considerable media attention. The US government has not officially confirmed their authenticity, but the Pentagon has launched a hunt for whoever leaked them, and the Department of Justice is conducting a criminal investigation as well.Russia and Ukraine have largely shrugged offthe documents as irrelevant.

While Washington and London have never officially confirmed the presence of their special forces in Ukraine, multiple media outlets have reported on it over the past year. The British Daily Mirror reported that dozens of “retired” SAS operatorshad gone to Ukraine to contribute their expertise to Kiev’s cause, funded through a private military company in an unnamed European country. Shortly after those revelations, the Times said a number of SAS operators had “returned” to Ukraine to teach Kiev’s soldiers how to operate British-made anti-tank rockets.

The outlet Grayzone reported in November that British special operators had been working through a private company calledPrevail Partnersto train Ukrainian saboteurs targeting Crimea. In December, a British military publication admitted that up to300 Royal Marineshad been deployed to Ukraine for “discrete operations.”

US making ‘bioweapons components’ in Ukraine

The evidence is overwhelming, according to the Russian military

The US is using Ukraine tomanufacture components for biological weapons, the commander of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Forces briefed the State Duma on Tuesday. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov says the Russian military found ample evidence of this in Donetsk, Lugansk and Kherson.

“We have no doubt that the US, under the guise of ensuring global biosecurity, conducteddual-use research, including the creation of biological weapons components, inclose proximityto Russian borders,” Kirillov told lawmakers.

He said the military has come to this conclusion after interviewing multiple eyewitnesses and going over some2,000 pages of documentationfound in Kherson Region and the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. The investigation also involved a parliamentary task force and federal law enforcement.

Moscow raised concerns over a network of secretive US-funded laboratories in Ukraine in the early weeks of the conflict, and has frequently made public evidence about the program ever since. The US government confirmed the existence of the labs last March, but insisted they were neither illegal nor intended for a military purpose,despite the factthat much of their funding went through the Pentagon.

According to Kirillov, the investigation hasidentified specific individualsinvolved in the military bio-research in the territory of the US and Ukraine. He also noted that the facts made public by the Russian Defense Ministry have not been disputed.

“No one, including Western countries, has had any doubts about the authenticity of the published documents,” the general said.

Moscow took the biolabs issue to the UN last October, requesting an international probe, but the motion was blocked by the US, UK, and France in the Security Council.

The program in Ukraine was previously known as ‘Joint biological research’ but has since been rebranded as ‘Biological control research’, according to documents Kirillov presented last week. The US has blamed an alleged “Russian disinformation campaign” for the increased public scrutiny of the biolabs.

India hasn’t decided about Zelensky G20 role – media

Kiev is demandingNew Delhi’s endorsement ahead of the September summit

Ukraine wants its president Vladimir Zelensky invited to the G20 summit in New Dehli this September,despite not being a memberof the club of large rich nations, Indian media has reported.

Kiev has been wooing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a charm offensive, the Deccan Herald claimed on Tuesday. The outlet noted that a delegation of Indian diplomats, possibly led by Modi’s national security advisor, Ajit Doval, might travel to Ukraine in the coming weeks.

However, it added that Modi has not committed to bringing Zelensky to the G20 or paying a visit to Kiev himself, despite Ukraine’s entreaties.

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova is visiting India this week, insisting in a series of meetings with junior government officials thatNew Delhi needs to denounce Moscowand endorse Kiev instead. She is the highest-ranked Ukrainian official to arrive in New Delhi since the hostilities with Russia escalated in February 2022.

India “wants to be the Vishwaguru, the global teacher and arbiter,” Dzhaparova tweeted on Monday. “In our case, we’ve got a very clear picture: aggressor against innocent victim. Supporting Ukraine is the only right choice for true Vishwaguru.” (This person has just sealed the fate of Ukraine to never be invited to the G20! Their arrogance is well noticed by India. India is one of the oldest countries in the world. They will wait a millennia to get the conditions they want. Ukraine will be waiting a long time.)

Ukraine considers India “a leader of the global south” and hopes New Delhi will be “involved and engaged in global issues and challenges,”Dzhaparova told journalists after meeting with Sanjay Verma, secretary for the West at the Indian foreign ministry.

In a follow-up TV interview, she said that Ukraine was eager to host Doval andexpected India to invite Zelenskyto the G20 summit. Though Ukraine is not a part of the G20, Zelensky was invited by Indonesia to address last year’s gathering via video-link, delivering a diatribe against Russia.

“We believe intensification of political dialogue on the highest level is [the] first step towards this big goal. My president is requesting a phone conversation with the prime minister. We are looking forward to welcoming him in Kiev one day,” Dzhaparova said.

India has always had substantial trade and military ties to Russia, which have only increased in recent years. It is currently one of Russia’s best customers when it comes to buying oil, especially after Moscow cut off all sales to the US, EU and any countries participating in their price cap scheme, intended to complement the embargo imposed over the Ukraine conflict.

Poland wants ‘strongest’ US-backed army

Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki claims the US is committed to a “permanent presence” in Poland

The US will increase itspermanent military presencein Poland, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday after meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington.

Harris “spoke about strengthening the permanent presence” of American troops in Poland, Morawiecki told the Polish broadcaster RMF after his visit to the White House.

“The US isfully committedto strengthening its presence in Poland,” Morawiecki said, adding that he also discussed the missile defense complex currently under construction in the northern Polish town of Redzikowo. (He’s going to be very disappointed.)

Noting that this was acontroversial topic just a few years ago, the PM said he was “very glad that the vice president spoke not only about the additional presence of several thousand soldiers, but also about the construction of a base and warehouses for the accumulation of equipment and American weapons,” intended to fight against Russia in Ukraine. (So President Trump said no, and Kamala offered something we can’t or won’t do)

Morawiecki spoke with Polish reporters after a joint press appearance with Harris at the White House. During the presser, the Polish PM said that Warsaw “wants to become a bedrock of European security” and is on the right track to do so, increasing its military spending this yearto 4% of the gross domestic product.

Harris acknowledged that the “ironclad commitment” of the United States has already “resulted in an increase in the number of troops… that we have sent to Poland,” as well as the creation of a “new permanent army headquarters” – but stopped short of publicly announcing any new deployments.

“Poland wants to build the strongest army in Europe,” Morawiecki said. “That is why we want to cooperate with the most advanced defense industry in the world, which is the American industry.”

Morawiecki also called close relations between Warsaw and Washington “the best vaccine against Russian imperialism,” and said the two countries were “two poles of Western civilization.”

Poland is currently serving as thelogistics hub for NATOto funnel weapons, ammunition and equipment to Ukraine, while insisting they are not actually a party to Kiev’s conflict with Russia. There is no permanent US base in Poland, which joined NATO in 1999, as the US-led bloc was bombing Yugoslavia. President Andrzej Duda said in February that some10,000 US troopswere currently quarteredin his country, double the number deployed in 2020 on a rotational basis.

Warsaw had sought a permanent US base for years, going so far as to propose naming it “Fort Trump” in 2018, during the previous American presidency. Morawiecki flew to Washington on Tuesday to meet with Harris as President Joe Biden departed on a four-day trip to Ireland.
