Whenever the Civil War comes up, this story comes to mind about the "Kingdom of Callaway". Anon encourages interested anons to read the story. The question about whether the county really became a "kingdom" is interesting, but the later location of the Churchill Memorial, a transplanted English church and other international events causes anon to wonder.

The people of the county apparently may have been protected from a lot of violence by coming out to protect the county but not in any other capacity (not Union nor Confederacy) but only to protect their own communities from invasion.
