The question about whether the county really became a "kingdom" is interesting, but the later location of the Churchill Memorial, a transplanted English church and other international events causes anon to wonder.
The people of the county apparently may have been protected from a lot of violence by coming out to protect the county but not in any other capacity (not Union nor Confederacy) but only to protect their own communities from invasion.
