Russia probes claim POWs’ organs were harvested

Man in video claims he was a Ukrainian field surgeon involved in selling eyes he cuts from Russian prisoners

Russia is investigating self-incriminating claims by a person claiming to be aUkrainian military surgeonwho is recorded implying that he was involved in theextraction of organsfrom Russian prisoners of war (POWs), and in their sale on the black market.

The head of the Russian Investigative Committee, Aleksandr Bastrykin, has ordered a probe into video footage that went viral on Russian social media this week, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.

The roughly minute-long clip appears to show a heated TeleLink exchange between “Vladimir Vasilievich,” a man claiming to be a Ukrainian field medic, and somebody he branded as a “Rashist … blogger,” using a pejorative word for “Russian.”

The recording was partially redacted but ‘Vladimir’s interlocutor appears to taunt him before the self-described field surgeon makes his claims, presumably asking his subject about whether he’d amputated the legs of Ukrainian soldiers.

“I mostly cut off the legs of your pigs, alsotheir arms and eyes. Do you know how much grannies in Germany pay for [eyes]?” he responded.

“I cut out eyes, andkidneys, and liver from you 27-year-old[redacted],” the man is heard ranting in a mocking tone.

‘Vladimir’ also claimed that hedenied anesthesiato injured Russians in his care, ignoring instructions from his superiors. “I cut out their eyes … and enjoy it,” he declared.

His identity remains uncertain. Some sources claim he is a Ukrainian national from the Ivano-Frankivsk Region, listed as having served in the National Guard between 2014 and 2015. Whether he committed the crimes he is claiming credit for is an open question.

In March 2022, there was a similar incident involving Gennady Druzenko, a constitutional lawyer-turned-volunteer frontline medic in Ukraine. During an interview with national television, he said thathe’d ordered the castration of all Russian POWsthat his medical unit treats “because they are cockroaches and not people.”

Druzenko later disavowed his scandalous statement, offering an assurance that it was not true and that he was acting out because of his emotional state.

Kiev has pledged that it has observed its international obligations to respect the rules of war. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that mistreatment and even summary executions of POWs was a pervasive practice among Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine a ‘non-existent country’ financially – Orban

The conflict will end as soon as the West stops giving money to Kiev, the Hungarian PM has insisted

The EU isn’t going to provide Kiev with funds indefinitely, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned Friday during an interview with a Kossuth radio station.

“Effectively, Ukraine is a non-existent country in financial terms," he declared.

“The fall in economic indicators is huge, which is completely understandable due to the war. Obviously,Ukraine can’t finance itself,” the Hungarian leader explained.

TheEUis now paying Ukrainiansalaries, pensions and healthcare, allocating “huge sums, which the European economy is missing out on,” the PM pointed out. He added that this support “can’t continue indefinitely.”

According to Orban, the question is whether the West wants to continue sustaining Ukraine.“The moment when America and Europe answer ‘no’ to that question – the war will end,”he stressed.

Budapest is also involved in financing the Kiev government through joint EU mechanisms, but despite this, the situation keeps deteriorating for theHungarian minorityin Ukraine’s Transcarpathia Region, the prime minister said.

Orban had previously complained aboutUkraine mistreatingethnic Hungarians in the country’s western region.

In his speech in February, the PM claimed that Hungarian symbols are being brought down in settlements across Transcarpathia, heads ofHungarian language schools are being removed, while “many ethnic Hungarians are dying on the frontline.”

The EU, its member states, and financial institutions have provided more than €50 [$55.3] billion in financial support to Kiev since the outbreak of fighting between Russia and Ukraine more than a year ago, including €12 billion in arms and €30 billion in macro-financial aid.

Hungary has supplied humanitarian aid to Kiev, but refused to send arms to President Vladimir Zelensky’s government, unlike many fellow EU members. Budapest has consistently called for a peaceful settlement to the conflict and criticized the sanctions imposed by Brussels on Moscow, arguing that they have failed to achieve their goal and were hurting the EU more than Russia.

EU nation bans Ukrainian grain

Slovakia has destroyed a 1,500-ton shipment contaminated with a banned pesticide

Slovak authorities have banned the processing and sale of Ukrainian grain after discovering adangerous pesticidein a shipment, the country’s Agriculture Ministry announced on its website on Thursday.

According to the statement, theban will cover all grainof Ukrainian origin and flour made from it that is currently stored in the country.

Earlier this week, Slovak authorities discovered a 1,500-ton shipment of Ukrainian grain to be contaminated withchlorpyrifos,a pesticide subject to an EU-wide ban.

“The presence of a pesticide, which is not authorized in the EU and has a negative impact on human health, was confirmed in the controlled sample,” the ministry said. The country’s Agriculture Minister, Samuel Vlcan, said earlier on Thursday that the entire shipment would be destroyed.

The duration of the ban is not specified, but the ministry noted that in the coming days the authorities intend to collect samples of all Ukrainian grain and flour stored in Slovakia to determine whether it is safe for consumption.

The ministry stressed that it “does not recommend the import of any Ukrainian grain and its products” at the moment and will notify all EU member states about the findings.

Ukrainian grain has been flooding the markets of Eastern Europe in recent months, after Brussels permitted duty-free imports from the country to help the products reach customers in Africa and the Middle East. Much of the produce, however, stayed in the EU due to logistical constraints, sparking complaints from local farmers, who blamed cheap Ukrainian imports for the drop in prices for domestically produced grain.

Last month, the prime ministers of Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia demanded action from the European Commission on Ukrainian agricultural imports, calling for the reintroduction of import tariffs. In early April, the countries urged the Commission to buy back accumulated Ukrainian products from them on “humanitarian grounds.”

On April 7, Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus said his country had reached a deal with Kiev, which would see Ukrainian grain imports to the country halted, while transit will be allowed but closely monitored, ensuring that the grain does not stay in Poland.

Trump denied in bid to delay trial over Democrat donor issue

Former US president asked for a delay after it transpired plaintiff Jean Carroll’s defense had been funded by a Democratic donor

A federal judge has refused to postpone Donald Trump’s trial involving a lawsuit by former Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll, who is accusing the former US President of rape in the mid-1990s. The Trump defense asked for deferment after finding out that a major Democratic Party donor had covered some of Carroll’s legal fees.

Judge Lewis Kaplan did, however, allow Trump’s attorneys on Thursday to gather more information as to who exactly is picking up the tab for the plaintiff. They will have the opportunity to question Carroll overwhy she withheld factsabout the source of money propping up her legal team in October of last year.

Trump’s attorney Alina Habba had previously requested that the trial, scheduled to start on April 25, be deferred by one month.

This, in turn, was prompted by a revelation earlier this week that “at some point, [Carroll’s] counsel secured additional funding from a nonprofit organization to offset certain expenses and legal fees,” Trump’s attorneys stated.

They asserted that the backer is billionaire Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn, who is funding a nonprofit named American Future Republic.

In her letter to Judge Kaplan, Habba wrote that the new facts raise “significant questions as to Plaintiff’s credibility, as well as her motive for commencing and/or continuing the instant action.”

In her 2019 memoir, Carroll for the first time publicly alleged that Trump had raped her sometime between late 1995 and early 1996 in a dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York.

The then-public figure, who would go on to become the 45th US president, has consistently denied those claims, insisting that they are politically motivated.

Last Tuesday, a court in New York arrested Trump on 34 criminal charges in a separate case. The firebrand Republican is accused of falsifying business records with respect to the $130,000 of ‘hush money’ allegedly paid to porn actress Stormy Daniels by Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen. This was supposedly done ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Trump pleaded not guilty on all counts, dismissing the accusations as purely political.

He has become the first president in US history to face criminal prosecution.

Judge Lewis Kaplan overseeing Carroll vs Trump

Federal judicial service

On May 5, 1994, Kaplan was nominated by President Bill Clinton to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by Judge Gerard Louis Goettel. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 9, 1994, and received his commission on August 10, 1994. He took senior status on February 1, 2011, and was succeeded by Judge Ronnie Abrams.

Notable cases

Guantanamo detainees

Kaplan presided over the first case where charges against Guantanamo captives were laid in a civilian court. On February 9, 2010, Kaplan ordered Ahmed Ghailani's prosecution to review the record of Ghailani's detention in the CIA's network of black sites.[5]

According to The New York Times any materials that show the decisions "were for a purpose other than national security," must be turned over to Ghailani's lawyers. He denied a motion to dismiss the charges on the grounds that due to Ghailani's long extrajudicial detention he was denied the constitutional right to a speedy trial, ruling that his extended incarceration had no adverse impact on Mr. Ghailani's ability to defend himself. This cleared the way for federal prosecutors to try him for his suspected role in Al Qaeda's 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.[6]The New York Times reported that Kaplan's ruling could set a precedent for the cases of other Guantanamo captives, who, like Ghailani, are transferred to the civilian justice system. On January 25, 2011, Kaplan sentenced Ghailani to life and called the attacks "horrific" and saying the deaths and damage they caused far outweighs "any and all considerations that have been advanced on behalf of the defendant." He also ordered Ghailani to pay $33 million as restitution.[7]

Organized crime

Working in New York City, Kaplan had been the judge in a number of federal racketeering cases involving Mafia members. In April 2010, Kaplan was assigned to preside over the cases of 14 Gambino crime family members arrested on charges, among others, of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, witness tampering (in the 1992 trial of John Gotti), and sex trafficking of a minor.

In 2016-2017 Kaplan presided over US v. Spoutz, one of the first cases of successful prosecution of attributed artwork in the United States. Eric Spoutz, an art dealer, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud related to the sale of falsely attributed artwork accompanied by forged provenance documents. Kaplan sentenced him to 41 months in federal prison and ordered to forfeit the $1.45 million he made from the scheme and pay $154,100 in restitution.[8]

Chevron v. Donziger

Kaplan presided over and ruled in favor of Chevron's appeal of a major environmental case. It had originally been brought successfully on behalf of Ecuadorian indigenous tribes against Texaco-Chevron. Kaplan granted Chevron's motion barring enforcement of an almost $10 billion judgement by the Ecuadorian courts against the company. Lawyers for Chevron argued the ruling was illegitimate due to foul play on the part of the plaintiffs' in the case who allegedly introduced fabricated evidence and bribed witnesses and officials involved in the case. Kaplan found there to be overwhelming evidence that the Ecuadorian verdict was the result of a criminal conspiracy spear-headed by the plaintiff's lead attorney, Steven Donziger, who in turn, Kaplan fined $3.4 million for contempt and Chevron's legal fees, the largest contempt sanction in US history.[9][10]

Donziger was unable to satisfy the contempt fine and restitution award so Kaplan ordered he surrender certain personal items of his such as cell phones and computers. These devices were to be handed over to Chevron employees trying to locate any assets Dozinger may have concealed. Donziger refused to comply on the grounds doing so would be a breach of attorney-client privilege. In response, Kaplan found Donziger in criminal contempt and referred the case for prosecution. When the SDNY US Attorney's Officedeclined to pursue the case, Kaplan appointed a private law firm, Seward & Kissel to prosecute Donziger.[11]

Donziger has accused Kaplan of displaying apro-corporate biasin the case.[12]

Miscellaneous

Other well-known cases Kaplan has presided over at the district level include Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp., Universal v. Reimerdes, Five Borough Bicycle Club v. The City of New York, and Crandell v. New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. [25] [26]

Since 2021, Kaplan has been the presiding judge on matters relating toVirginia Giuffre v. Prince Andrewover allegations of sexual assault.

Sam Bankman-Fried’s judge is a no-nonsense 78-year-old veteran with 3 decades on the bench known for getting irritable

A Manhattan federal judge known for swift decisions and a no-nonsense demeanor during three decades of overseeing numerous high-profile cases was assigned Tuesday to Sam Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency case.

The case was relegated to Judge Lewis A. Kaplan after the judge originally assigned recused herself because her husband worked for a law firm that had done work related to Bankman-Fried’s collapsed crypto exchange FTX.

Bankman-Fried, arrested in the Bahamas two weeks ago, was brought to the United States last week to face charges that he cheated investors and looted customer deposits on his FTX trading platform.

On Thursday, he was freed on a $250 million personal recognizance bond to live with his parents in Palo Alto, California, after an electronic monitoring bracelet was attached to him so authorities could track his whereabouts.

Kaplan, 78, who has held senior status in Manhattan federal court for over a decade, was nominated to the bench by President Bill Clinton in 1994.

Since then, he has overseen numerous high-profile trials and several cases notable in the financial world, including what authorities had described as the first federal bitcoin securities fraud prosecution. Kaplan sentenced the defendant to 18 months in prison.

In 2014, heblocked U.S. courts from being used to collect a $9 billion Ecuadorian judgment against Chevronfor rainforest damage, saying lawyers in the case had poisoned an honorable quest with illegal and wrongful conduct.

And in 2012, he delayed his acceptance of a guilty plea by a Utah banker, ordering prosecutors to explain in writing why they were letting the banker plead guilty to a misdemeanor bank gambling charge rather than a felony.

Kaplan has been known over the years to become irritable with lawyers on all sides.

In 1997, he blasted the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, as the government’s immigration department was once known, for not acting fast enough in an asylum case.

“This is about as expedited as a glacier going uphill,” he snapped.

Calling the agency’s behavior “absolutely outrageous,” he added: “The INS has in the three years I’ve been on the bench acquitted itself in disastrous fashion more than once, but this one takes the cake and I’m not going to stand for it much longer.”

In 2000,he ruled in favor of the motion picture industry, giving them legal protectionto protect DVDs from being copied on computers.

“Computer code is not purely expressive any more than the assassination of a political figure is purely a political statement,″ he said.

Most recently, Kaplan presided over thefall civil trial of Kevin Spaceyafter a fellow actor accused him of trying to molest him in his apartment after a party when he was 14 and Spacey was 26. A jury sided with Spacey, finding that actor Anthony Rapp had not proved his case against him.

Breakdown: What is known about the surrounded Ukrainian troops in Artyomovsk (Bakhmut)

How the operation is developing and what to expect next?

Bymid-April, the Ukrainian military group had been almost completely blockaded in the western part of Artyomovsk. Wagner PMC handed the northern and southern flanks over to the Russian forces and focused on clearing out city blocks.

How many troops does Ukraine have left in the city?

According to RT’s sources, onlyfour to seven battalions of Ukraine’s93rd Mechanized and 77th Air Mobile Brigades can be located inside the city to the west of the Artyomovsk railway line. Due to combat losses, as well as a shortage of medicine and ammunition, the actual number of soldiers in these units is significantly lower than usual, amounting to about250-300 per battalion.

There are also three to five battalions of the 125th Territorial Defense Brigade and four or five battalions of the 241st Territorial Defense Brigade to the west of the railway line.

Taking into account foreign mercenaries, Ukrainian National Guard units, Territorial Defense forces, and military units, the total number of Ukrainian troops occupying the city might be slightly over6,000.

The remaining forces, numbering about30,000, are either dispersed in nearby suburbs(Khromov, Krasnoye, Stupochki, Bogdanovka, and Minkovka), or have withdrawn from Artyomovsk to the neighboring town of Chasov Yar for resupply and rearmament, and cannot be quickly thrown into a counterattack due to heavy losses and a lack of equipment.

What is happening inside Artyomovsk?

The timing of the destruction of the Ukrainian group, which is actuallyhemmed into western districtsof the city, directly depends on which tasks are assigned to Wagner PMC and the Russian Armed Forces units operating on the flanks.

At the moment,9,000 to 11,000 of Kiev’s troops are killedin Artyomovskper monthdue to the battering of Ukrainian troops inside the city and nearby suburbs.

This has compelled the Ukrainian military to deploy reserves for the defense of Artyomovsk, which had been prepared for carrying out the previously announced counteroffensive.

However, the new reserves areoccupying old targeted positions, leaving them vulnerable. To advance in the city, Wagner PMC employs semi-interception tactics. This is when Ukrainian units (from one or two companies) are enclosed in a ring and destroyed, and the area where the operation takes place is then blocked off so that the Ukrainian forces cannot quickly bring in reinforcements.

These tactics have already begun to significantly increase losses for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and lead to an acute shortage of reserves. The number of Ukrainian soldiers killed and wounded since the beginning of April exceeds the number of reinforcements received. As the Russian Armed Forces advance on Artyomovsk from the flanks (north and south),more and more Ukrainian reserves are being killedon the roads between Chasov Yar and Artyomovsk’s western quarters.

When their supply line is finally completely cut off, the Ukrainian group in Artyomovsk (from Metallurg Boulevard in the north to the Bakhmut Industrial College area in the south) will face a choice: to fight until their ammunition is exhausted or use the weapons they have left to attempt a breakthrough in order to retreat from the city.

Russia could criminalize ‘deepfakes’

Lawmakers propose harsher punishments if crimes are committed using AI-generated media

The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) is preparing a bill that would introduce criminal liability for using ‘deepfakes’ forfraudulent purposes such as extortion or theft. The details of the proposal were posted to the party’s Telegram channel on Friday.

Yaroslav Nilov , deputy head of the LDPR faction in the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, noted that deepfakes – images and videos that have been altered using a neural network – can be used by plotters to deceive and obtain money from victims.

The party has suggested updating the Russian criminal code to define the use of deepfakes as harmful, and an aggravating circumstance, in several articles.

“If a deepfake is used, those guilty of fraud will face up tofive years in prison or a fine, for theft – up to two years, for extortion – up to four years, and for misappropriation or embezzlement of someone else’s property – up to two years,” the party wrote.

State Duma Deputy Arkadiy Svistunov explained thatfraud in the banking and financial sectoris growing, and that deep fake technology is becoming an additional tool used by attackers who employ social engineering to convince victims to reveal their passwords, personal data or even transfer money to an account. “It is difficult for banks to deal with this, because formally everything is according to the law,” he said.

Andrey Svintsov, deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, pointed out that while deepfakes can be used to create content on social media, “revive” the dead and help in psychotherapy, they can also be used by criminals for deception and extortion. “We, as legislators, must respond to this. Our bill is correct and timely, it acts ahead of the curve,” Svintsov added.

Last month, a report by the Intercept revealed that thePentagon’s secret operationsbranch was allegedly seeking capabilities to deploy “next generation” deepfakes, touse them in information warfare.

According to procurement documents obtained by the outlet, the US Special Operations Command’s Military Information Support Operations (MISO) is seeking a “next generation of ‘deep fake’ or other similar technology to generate messages andinfluence operationsvia non-traditional channels in relevant peer/near peer environments.”

Despite seeking to weaponize the technology itself, Washington has repeatedly voiced concerns that deepfakes could pose a threat to democracy and public trust, and be used by adversaries such as China and Russia to launch disinformation campaigns.

US Special Ops want to weaponize deep fakes – The Intercept

Officials are seeking technology to falsify images for propaganda campaigns, documents show

The Pentagon’s secret operations branch is seeking capabilities to deploy “next generation” deep fakes in information warfare andhack the Internet of Things(IoT) to track their impact, a procurement document has revealed. The Intercept reported on the initiative on Monday.

The document in question outlines a technologywish listfor US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), which is responsible for Washington’s clandestine military actions around the world. It was first published in 2020 and lastupdated in October 2022, adding tools that can falsify images of public figures to its desired inventory, according to the outlet.

The command’sMilitary Information Support Operations (MISO)is seeking a “next generation of ‘deep fake’ or other similar technology to generate messages and influence operations via non-traditional channels in relevant peer/near peer environments,” it states.

Deep-fake technology uses publicly available imagery to create a digital version of a person, which can then be used to fabricate footage. It is currently used mostly for entertainment, including the production of fake pornography featuring celebrities.

US officials have long voiced concerns that foreign adversaries, particularly rivals like China and Russia, could deploy deep fakes in disinformation campaigns. US agencies claim they are developing tools to detect such videos, purportedly so that users can defend themselves against such attacks.

The Pentagon procurement document appears to prove that, while Washington decries the threat to democracy and public trust posed by deep fakes, theDepartment of Defense is seeking to weaponize them.

The same paper mentions a “next generation capability to ‘takeover’ Internet of Things (IoT) devices” – applianceswith online connectivity and various sensors to track their environment – to assess the effect of propaganda campaigns. Hacking such devices would allow the military to “collect dataand informationfrom local populacesto enable breakdown of what messaging might be popular” so that MISO could “craft and promote messages”better.

The Intercept previously reported that the Pentagon had leveraged theUS government’s influence over US tech companiesto secure support forpropagandaoperations in the Middle East.

Russia places Pacific fleet on ‘high alert’

Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu clarified that this was done as part of a surprise combat readiness check

Russia has switched its Pacific Navy fleet tofull combat readiness modeas part of a surprise check. Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu revealed that drills would be held aimed at preventing ‘enemy forces’ from landing on Sakhalin Island and the southern coast of the Kuril Islands.

Addressing Russia’s top brass on Friday, Shoigu said that the “Pacific Fleet was put onhigh alert at full strength” at 9am local time that same day. He added that the exercise’s objective is to enhance the “armed forces’ ability to repel aggression by a potential adversary from the ocean and sea.”

According to Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, special emphasis is being placed onensuring the strategic nuclear submarines’ combat readiness.

Apart from preventing enemy landings, thefleet will also have to locate and destroy enemy submarinesand warship strike groups, and land equipment, Shoigu noted. In the meantime, air defense units are expected to cover potentially dangerous areas.

The Russian Air Force is taking part in the maneuvers alongside the Navy.

Tokyo disputes Russian sovereignty over four of the islands in the Kuril Archipelago, which the Soviet Union captured during World War II. In the San Francisco Treaty of 1951, Japan relinquished its claims to the Kurils but later claimed that the South Kuril Islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan, were never a part of the archipelago.

Back in February, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow was not considering signing or even discussing a peace treaty with Japan anytime soon. The diplomat cited Tokyo’s hostility toward Moscow and the sanctions the country imposed on Russia in the wake of the Ukraine conflict.

The remarks came shortly after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged to prioritize relaunching negotiations with the Kremlin on the issue.

Referring to the South Kuril Islands – the Northern Territories as he called them – Kishida described them as “illegally occupied” by Russia for the first time in five years.

Russia and Japan have technically remained at war with each other for almost eight decades, after failing to reach a post-WWII settlement. While Moscow did offer some compromises to Tokyo over the territories following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the two countries have nevertheless failed to resolve the issue once and for all.

(Only under Bidan can the world erupt in war stance!)
