Trump and Pence to address NRA convention in Indianapolis

Two-time running mates former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence, who may soon be opponents for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, are speaking at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Indianapolis on Friday.

The NRA convention is not just a gathering for gun enthusiasts; it also attracts Republican presidential hopefuls who want to showcase their support for Second Amendment rights. The NRA endorsed Trump during its 2016 annual convention.

Pence hasn't yet announced whether he will seek the presidency, but he has been visiting early-voting primary states, while Trump, the first major candidate in the race, and his allies insist the voters are already lined up to support him. Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who recently declared he's running for president, is making an appearance at the convention. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is not appearing in person at the convention, but the event will feature a video address from him.

Trump has bashed his former vice president ever since Pence affirmed Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election on Jan. 6, 2021, and has even tried to shift the blame for the riot to Pence, saying last month, "in many ways, you can blame him," meaning Pence, for what transpired that day.

Earlier this month, Pence decided not to appeal a ruling requiring him to testify before a grand jury as part of a special counsel investigation into the assault on the Capitol, but Trump's legal team is still trying to keep Pence from testifying.

Mike Flynn, whom Donald Trump has tapped to be his national security adviser, regularly interacted with alt-right figureheads online, and over the weekend he expressed his support of one — Milo Yiannopoulos — offline, too. According to CNN, when Flynn spoke to a gathering of young conservatives at Trump’s Washington, D.C., hotel, he brought Yiannopoulos up, calling him “phenomenal” and “one of the most brave people I’ve ever met.”

“See, a lot of people in here won’t know who he is,” Flynn said, referring to Yiannopoulos. “I tag him on Twitter, you know, because he’s a phenomenal individual, and I’m mentioning him tonight because he spoke alongside of me last night to another group of folks.”

4.1 Introduction In 2000, employees of the PMSC DynCorp International LIC (DynCorp) were involved in trafficking women from Eastern Europe into forced prostitution in Bosnia. As outlined in the introduction to this book, the US government had contracted DynCorp to provide police monitors as part of its contribution to the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH). The involvement of DynCorp employees in trafficking women to brothels in Bosnia is of interest for three reasons. First, the case of DynCorp in Bosnia is the best documented case of private military contractors' involvement in sex in peace operations. Second, DynCorp employees were not alone in Bosnia in organising and benefit- ting from human trafficking, as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) military Stabilisation Force, other contractors, local police, UN personnel and humanitarian workers were also involved. Third, there is evidence of a 'zero tolerance regime being applied to trafficking and prostitution by DynCorp under pressure from the US government and by

the UN in November 2000.1 This chapter aims to investigate the practical reality of regulating sex in peace operations through a case study of DynCorp private military contractors in Bosnia. DynCorp's presence in Bosnia needs to be under- stood in the context of the post-war UN peacekeeping mission. The Bosnian war concluded in 1995 with the signing of the General Frame- work for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. “It will make for interesting political theater,” said a Republican close to past such NRA proceedings who has met with both Trump and Pence on the issue of firearms, and was granted anonymity to discuss private conversations.

The cattle call in front of rank-and-file NRA members amid what is advertised to be “14 acres of guns & gear” this weekend will be the first time that both Pence and Trump have shared a stage since they left office. And it will be the first of a series of events ahead of the 2024 presidential primary where they will both be featured speakers. Pence and Trump are both addressing top RNC donors in Nashville this weekend. The two are unlikely to cross paths, a person familiar with the logistics of the event told POLITICO. And on both occasions, Trump will have the last word.

“They’ll choreograph it,” a person close to both Trump and Pence orbits said.

In addition, both will speak at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition spring kick off next week, although Trump will be giving his speech remotely.

The dueling appearances come amid an increasingly icy and unprecedented point in their relationship. Never before in American history has the sitting vice president challenged the former president of his own party.

It’s not just a political conflict. They’re also potentially at odds in the courts, too. Trump has appealed a federal court’s decision to force Pence to testify to a grand jury investigating Trump’s effort to subvert the 2020 election.
