Donbass town comes under deadly Ukrainian shelling – official

Four people were killed in Yasinovataya in Donetsk People’s Republic, according to DPR head Denis Pushilin

Four people, including a child, were killed when the town of Yasinovataya in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) was shelled by Ukrainian forces on Friday, the acting head of the region, Denis Pushilin, has claimed.

“There has been more shelling of residential areas in the republic,” Pushilin wrote on Telegram.

Four civilians lost their lives, including a seven-year-old girl, while at least ten others were injured, he added.

Emergency services were deployed to the scene, with the wounded being provided with the necessary assistance, the DPR leader added.

Yasinovataya has a population of around 37,000 and is located 25km north of the republic’s capital, Donetsk. The settlementhosts a major railway station.

“During the holidays, the enemy has intensified the shelling… Be careful,” Pushilin warned the public.Orthodox Christians are celebrating Easter on Sunday.

Ukraine launched a total of23 attacksagainst settlements in the DPR on Friday, during which 108 rounds from both multiple rocket launchers and 155mm artillery were fired, local authorities stated.

In addition to Yasinovataya, Donetsk and the settlements of Gorlovka, Panteleymonovka, Vladimirovka, and Peski were targeted. In Peski, one person was reportedly wounded by the shelling.

The DPR was incorporated into Russia last October together with the People’s Republic of Lugansk and Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions, following referendums in which the local populations voted overwhelmingly in favor of the step.

China stalls Blinken’s visit – FT

The “spy balloon” controversy remains a stumbling block in relations between Beijing and Washington, the paper claims

China is refusing to fix a new datefor a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken due to concerns that Washington might, during the trip, publish the results of a probe into a suspected spy balloon incident, the Financial Times has reported, citing sources.

Blinken was scheduled to arrive in China in early February, but the Biden administration decided to postpone the visit after a Chinese high-altitude balloon was spotted in US airspace. Washington ordered the aircraft to be shot down, claiming it had been spying on defense facilities. China insisted it was merely a meteorological device blown off course by the wind.

The sides have been unable to reach an agreement on a new date for Blinken’s arrival, as the Chinese authorities want clarity on what the US is planning to do with the results of an investigation by the FBI, which has been studying the debris of the destroyed balloon, the FT reported on Saturday.

China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang discussed the situation surrounding the balloon with American officials attending the China Development Forum in Beijing in March,“people familiar with the meeting” told the outlet.

Qin reportedly described the FBI probe as yet another example of issues that have made it hard to stabilize China-US ties.

The FT cited the spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, who said Beijing “cannot but seriously question the independence, openness and transparency of the so-called investigation.” According to Liu, the Chinese side is “firmly opposed to the US continuously making use of the [balloon] incident for political purposes and hyping up the ‘China threat’.”

The FBI and US National Security Council have so far been reluctant to say whether the results of the probe will be made public or not.

The balloon incident is not the only issue clouding relations between Washington and Beijing, which appear to be at theirlowest pointsince the countriesestablished diplomatic ties in 1979.Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s meetings with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other US lawmakers on American soil earlier this month are yet another reason why Blinken’s visit to China remains held up, the sources told the FT.

Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but never officially declared independence from China. Beijing considers the island to be a part of its territory and vigorously opposes contacts between Taipei and Washington, which supports the Taiwanese push for sovereignty and has promised to protect the island militarily.

Democrats push to limit US president’s nuclear powers

Lawmakers warned that a “rogue” leader could someday take control of America’s atomic arsenal

Democrats in the House and Senate have introduced a bill that would force the White House to seek Congressional approval before ordering a nuclear strike, insisting the president should not have unilateral authority to start a nuclear war.

Introduced by SenatorEd Markeyand RepresentativeTed Lieuon Friday, the ‘Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act’ would prohibit any US president from “launching a nuclear strike without prior authorization from Congress,” as well as reaffirm lawmakers’ war powers under the US Constitution.

“No president has the right or the constitutional authority to unilaterally declare war, let alone launch a nuclear first strike,” Senator Markey said in a statement, while Lieu added that “no one person should have the ability to launch a war that would end life as we know it.”

Both lawmakers went on to accuse Russian President Vladimir Putin of “nuclear threats,”arguing that the risk of nuclear warfare “has never been clearer” amid the conflict raging in Ukraine. Moscow has dismissed such charges, however, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently stating that the US and its allies are “prone to hysterical reaction” on the subject of nuclear arms.

In their joint statement, Markey and Lieu also marked the anniversary of the April 15, 1969 shootdown of a US spy plane by North Korean forces over the Sea of Japan, claiming that an “intoxicated President Richard Nixon” ordered a nuclear strike in response. They noted that the order was “disregarded,” but said the incident nonetheless “exposed the dangerous possibility ofa rogue US presidentordering a nuclear strike without Congressional authorization.”

While an American reconnaissance craft was shot down by the DPRK in 1969 and the Nixon administration contemplated a nuclear strike in retaliation, there is little evidence to support the claim that the president ordered an attack while drunk.

The two Democrats have introduced similar bills on several occasions in recent years, each seeking to rein in the president’s authority to launch nuclear strikes, but they have failed to pass. Though President Joe Biden vowed on the campaign trail to work toward a policy which would only see Washington use nuclear weapons in response to nuclear attacks, he later backtracked, instead reaffirming a longstanding US policy of using the bomb to deter conventional and other non-nuclear threats.

(Once again they are preparing to neuter the Presidency in anticipation PDJT will win. They miss the whole point and timing of nuclear weapons. Additionally they are worried about the hairbrains in charge now!)
