Germany could run out of gas by end of next January

The country’s energy security “has not been restored,” the industry has warned

Germany will have to put up withfurther gas consumption restrictionsor face a severe gas shortage if the next winter is cold, the nation’s Gas Storage Association (INES) warned in a forecast published on Wednesday.

The current level of consumption and the legal gas storage filling requirements would be inadequate in the event of a cold winter, the forecast said. Currently, German gas storages are only required to be filled to 40% by the end of January 2024, the association noted.

The existing regulations would only allow the nation to get through the next winter “if temperatures are warm,” the INES report said, adding that “if temperatures are medium to cold, the gas storage facilities will be heavily or completely emptied.”

In the worst-case scenario, the storage facilities will be “already completely emptied in January 2024 during cold temperatures,” the forecast said, adding that it isunlikely Berlin would be able to compensatefor the missing volumes and would face a severe shortage through the rest of the winter.

“Looking ahead to the coming winter, gas supply security in Germany has not yet been restored,” the INES managing director, Sebastian Bleschke, warned. “It is crucial to fill the gas storage facilities and greatly reduce consumption when it gets cold,” he added. Bleschke also called for theexpansion of German gas infrastructurethat could “be activated at short notice and actually provide additional gas in the coming winter.”

The forecast presented by INES described “warm winter temperatures” like those observed in parts of Europe in 2020, when winter in the Baltic Sea region, Finland and Western Russia was up to eight degrees Celsius warmer than on average.

The “cold winter” scenario was based on the 2010-2011 season, which saw record cold temperatures reported in the UK, Ireland, France, and parts of Scandinavia as early as November.

Germany, along with otherEU states, has been gradually reducing its reliance on Russian energy suppliessince the start of the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev. The EU did not outright ban Russian pipeline gas imports, but the flows still dwindled significantly due to Ukraine-related sanctions and following the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which was one of the main routes for Russian gas to Europe.

(And the UK thinks Russia will collapse, Russia has energy, food and infrastructure. EU has green energy goals and are destroying their farms. Germany just shut down their last nuclear reactor, a very clean energy due to Japan spill in 2011. Nothing they do makes sense unless their goal is depopulation by killing their own citizens. US urges ratification of Sweden’s NATO bid

Defense chief Lloyd Austin says Washington is looking forward to the Nordic state joining the bloc this summer

The US has reiterated its support for Sweden’s NATO membership as Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin visited the country to meet with his Swedish counterpart, marking thefirst time a Pentagon chiefhas visited the Nordic state in over 20 years.

Austin told reporters at a press conference that Washington “looks forward to soon welcoming Sweden as the 32nd” member of NATO, and said the US hopes this happens before the upcoming NATO summit in July.

The defense chief urged Türkiye and Hungary, the last two NATO members yet to approve Stockholm’s membership, to ratify the accession as soon as possible.

Last May, Sweden and Finland renounced their longstanding neutrality and submitted bids to join the US-led military bloc, citing the perceived threat from Russia due to its military operation in Ukraine.

However, in order to be accepted into the bloc, the membership application must first be ratified by all current member states. This process was blocked by Hungary and Türkiye, with Ankara accusing the Nordic states of supporting Kurdish “terrorist groups” such as the Kurdistan’s Workers’ Party (PKK).

While Finland’s bid was eventually ratified by both Ankara and Budapest in late March, with the country officially joining the bloc earlier this month, Sweden’s NATO bid has remained in limbo.

The Turkish authorities claim that Stockholm has not yet fully addressed its grievances, while Hungarian Prime MinisterViktor Orban has accused it of “spreading blatant lies about Hungary, about the rule of law in Hungary, about democracy, about life here.”

Both Sweden and Finland have been fiercely critical of Hungary’s conservative government. Both support the EU’s withholding of funds from Budapest overOrban’s supposed stifling of LGBTQ and migrant rights, as well as judicial independence concerns.

EU pledges support for states flooded with Ukrainian grain – Politico

Brussels reportedly plans to introduce tariffs on agricultural imports and allocate more funds to Eastern European farmers

The European Commission (EC) said on Wednesday it is considering complying with some of the demands from eastern EU member states tointroduce tariffs on Ukrainian agricultural imports.

The announcement comes as Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Bulgaria have been lobbying for the reintroduction of tariffs in order to protect local markets from “destabilization” caused by an influx of cheap goods from Ukraine.Local farmersin those countries claim to havesuffered substantial financial lossesdue to theglut of Ukrainian grain.

In a letter to the five countries, cited by Politico, the commission reportedly proposed “preventative measures” on imports ofUkrainian maize, wheat, sunflower and rapeseed. The EC’s spokesperson told a daily briefing that the commission envisages imposingcustoms dutieson those products, the outlet wrote.

It also said that Brussels is expected to allocate additional funding for so-called solidarity lanes for Ukrainian agricultural exports to the global market and distribute €100 million ($109 million) in support for the five eastern European member states.

The proposal will reportedly be discussed on Wednesday during a meeting of the European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski, European Commissioner of Trade Valdis Dombrovskis and the five countries' trade ministers. Wojciechowski said earlier the commission would announce “good news” for farmers.

The EU allowed imports of Ukrainian agricultural goods to help Kiev financially during the ongoing conflict in the country.All tariffs and quotas were liftedon Ukrainian grain exports to the bloc’s 27 member states in order to enable the further transit of the grain to global markets. However, much of the supply has ended up getting stuck in eastern European countries, hitting local farmers’ business.

This culminated in massive farmer protests earlier this month, which blocked border crossings and forced the five eastern EU nations to demand action from the EC over Ukrainian agricultural exports.

The EC earlier approved an aid package worth €56 million to support farmers in frontline countries who have to deal with the consequences of a large amount of agricultural and food goods from Ukraine entering the bloc. However, even the latest €100 million in proposed aid may not be enough. According to the commission’s estimates, farmers from Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Slovakia have lost some €417 million over the past year due to the oversupply of grain.

Police fend off worshippers at disputed Kiev monastery

Backed by law enforcement officers, Ukrainian CultureMinistry inspectors “broke into” church buildings on the grounds

Tempers flared on Wednesday at the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra monastery in the Ukrainian capital as the Culture Ministry pushed forward withefforts to seize the propertyof the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). Scuffles broke out between police and believers opposing the government’s actions.

A commission tasked with recording the current state of the monastery on behalf of the Ukrainian government arrived on the premises in the morning and were accompanied by police officers, according to local media. The officials were interested in three particular buildings. They placedseals on interior doors and locked the protective metal curtains on entrances.

TheUOC described the action as a break-in, since the commission cut off locks to get inside, and complained that thepolice refusedto stop the“illegal action.” Supporters of the church present protested, and officers armed with automatic weapons were sent it for reinforcement.

The ensuing confrontation involved angry shouting and some pushing by both sides, but no major violence, according to footage from the scene. Afemalesupporter of the UOC was reportedlypunched in her chest. The activists managed to break one of the curtains and enter the building. Some of them and a priest were reportedlylocked by the police inside a chapelfor some time.

The Culture Ministry rebuked the UOC supporters for a “clear violation of public order.” It claimed thatinspectorsfound the property in astate of neglect, with fire safety regulations allegedly not having been adhered to.

The standoff over the ancient monastery started in March, when the department annulled the UOC’s lease of the property and ordered the monks living on the premises to vacate it. Culture Minister Aleksandr Tkachenko made it clear that the clerics could stay if they switched their allegiance to the Kiev-supported Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).

President VladimirZelensky refused to meetthe UOC governing council of bishops to resolve the conflict. Metropolitan Pavel, the head of the monastery, laid personal blame for the crackdown on the Ukrainian leader. He was consequently arrested for alleged incitement of hatred and “justifying and denying Russian military aggression.”

Earlier this week, Tkachenko appointed a new caretaker, Maksim Ostapenko, for the government museum that oversees the monastery.Ostapenko is a historian with strong ties to Ukrainian nationalist paramilitaries.

Netflix sued for turning Cleopatra black

Lawyer Mahmoud al-Semary wants the platform shut down in Egypt for its depiction of the ancient leader

Egyptian lawyer Mahmoud al-Semary has sued Netflix over its depiction of the ancient Egyptian leader Cleopatra as black in the forthcoming documentary film ‘Queen Cleopatra’. He demanded that the streaming giant beshut down in Egyptin a complaint filed with the Public Prosecutor on Tuesday.

Calling for the Netflix production team to be punished for participating in a “crime,” al-Semary argued that the recently-released trailer flies in the face of Egyptian history and promotes a divisive Afrocentrism.

“In order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world there must be pride in the makings of such work,” the attorney said, adding that most of Netflix’s offerings “do not conform to Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones.”

The complaint also accuses Netflix and the makers of ‘Queen Cleopatra’ of “forgery.” Actress Adele James, who portrays the iconic Egyptian queen in the film, vowed to block all detractors on social media after Twitter users accused her of cultural appropriation.

Former Egyptian Antiquities Minister Zahi Hawass condemned the production last week for“falsifying facts,” pointing out that “Cleopatra was Greek, meaning that she was blonde, not black.”

Calling on Egyptians to speak out against Netflix’s revisionism, Hawass excoriated the trend that has emerged in some American black populations of claiming the Egyptian civilization actually came from black Africa.

“Netflix is trying to stir up confusion to spread false information that the origin of Egyptian civilization is black,” he said, insisting such claims were categorically false.

Egyptian temples from the era depict the civilization’s kings as racially distinct from the African, Nubian, Libyan, and Asian enemies they are illustrated in combat with, Hawass pointed out. He explained that Egypt did not fall under the leadership ofblack Africans until the Kingdom of Kush– the 25th dynasty, at the end of the civilization now known as Ancient Egypt. Cleopatra was of Macedonian Greek origin, as were her ancestors, the Ptolemaic dynasty, who had ruled Egypt for nearly three centuries by the time of her reign.All are depicted as blackin the documentary.

A Change.org petition launched by two Egyptians calling on Netflix to cancel the miniseries for “falsifying history” attracted over 85,000 signatures in under two days before the platform mysteriously removed it.

Produced by actress Jada Pinkett Smith, the film is set to air next month as part of Netflix’s ‘African Queens’ series.

Marathon runner disqualified for using car

Scottish runner Joasia Zakrzewski drove for 2.5 miles during this year’s GB Ultras

Scottish ultramarathon runner Joasia Zakrzewski has been disqualified for using a car during a race in Manchester earlier this month. Zakrzewski was caught after GPS data showedher covering a mile faster than humanly possible.

The 47-year-old runner finished in third place at this year’s GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool race on April 7. However, GB Ultras director Wayne Drinkwater told the BBC on Tuesday that he subsequently discovered she had gained an “unsporting, competitive advantage during a section of the event.”

Drinkwater said that race organizers received a tip suggesting Zakrzewski had cheated, and upon reviewing GPS tracking data, discovered that she had “taken vehicle transport” for 2.5 miles(4km) of the 50-mile (80km) route.

The data showed Zakrzewski covering a mile in a minute and 40 seconds. One of the runner’s friends told the BBC that she feels“genuinely sorry” for cheating, and did so because “the race didn’t go according to plan,”and she “was feeling sick and tired and wanted to drop out.” (How is this an excuse?)

Zakrzewski is an accomplished runner, and won the 48-hour race at the Taipei Ultramarathon in Taiwan in February, covering a world-record 255 miles (412km) across the two days. She won a silver medal for Great Britain at the IAU World 100km championships in the Netherlands in 2011, and took bronze in both Qatar in 2014 and again in the Netherlands in 2015.

She currently holds the Scottish 24-hour record, the British 200k record, and the Scottish 100 miles record.

Drinkwater told the BBC that Zakrzewski’s incident has been referred to the Trail Running Association and UK Athletics for further investigation.

Zakrzewski is not the first distance runner to use internal combustion to her advantage. Frederick Lorz, the winner of the marathon at the 1904 Olympic Games, was disqualified after it emerged that his manager drove him for the final 11 miles of the race. In 1979, Rosie Ruiz had her New York City Marathon gold medal revoked after it was discovered that sherode the city’s subwayfor most of the race and only ran the last 800 meters.
