Canada admits it can’t meet NATO spending goal – Pentagon leaks

US officials complained that Ottawa’s “defense shortfalls” are “straining partner relationships” in the North Atlantic bloc.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told NATO officials in private that Canada will “never” reach the bloc’s military spending target, according to a leaked Pentagon document obtained by the Washington Post.

Though NATO requires member states to spend at least 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense, Trudeau has informed the alliance that “Canada will never reach 2% defense spending,” the document says, noting that Ottawa’s military budget has not exceeded 1.4% of its economic output in nearly 30 years.

Obtained as part of a trove of leaked intelligence files which first appeared online in March, the document goes on to cite US complaints about its northern neighbor, saying that “Widespread defense shortfalls hinder Canadian capabilities, while straining partner relationships and alliance contributions” within NATO.

“Politically motivated” procurement decisions have also left parts of the Canadian military underequipped, the leaked assessment says, observing that most of its 89 Leopard 2 tanks “require extensive maintenance.” In one unit of 40 tanks, only nine are operational, while the military now has just half of the pilots it needs for full readiness.

Those “enduring” deficiencies prompted the Canadian military to conclude earlier this year that it “could not conduct a major operation while simultaneously maintaining its NATO battle group leadership [in Latvia] and aid to Ukraine,” the document adds.

When asked about Canada’s spending shortfalls earlier this week, Trudeau all but sidestepped the question, saying Ottawa would “do its share” while explaining that “governments are challenged with a whole bunch of different priorities that we have to… get the balance right on.”

According to NATO, Canada currently spends around 1.29% of its GDP on defense.

Stampede in Yemen at Ramadan charity event kills at least 78

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — A crowd apparently spooked by gunfire and an electrical explosion stampeded at an event to distribute financial aid during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in Yemen’s capital late Wednesday, killing at least 78 people and injuring at least 73 others, according to witnesses and Houthi rebel officials.

The tragedy was Yemen’s deadliest in years that was not related to the country’s long-running war, and came ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan later this week.

Armed Houthis fired into the air in an attempt at crowd control, apparently striking an electrical wire and causing it to explode, according to two witnesses, Abdel-Rahman Ahmed and Yahia Mohsen. That sparked a panic, and people, including many women and children, began stampeding, they said.

Video posted on social media showed dozens of bodies, some motionless, and others screaming as people tried to help. Separate footage of the aftermath released by Houthi officials showed bloodstains, shoes and victims’ clothing scattered on the ground. Investigators were seen examining the area.

The crush took place in the Old City in the center of Sanaa, where hundreds of poor people had gathered for a charity event organized by merchants, according to the Houthi-run Interior Ministry.

Video shows human smuggler attempt to run over Texas state trooper

Troopers continue to engage in dangerous, high-speed pursuits of human and drug smugglers, some with open arrest warrants.

warrants, and apprehend mostly single, military-age men who’ve illegally entered the U.S.

In one instance, human smugglers during a high-speed chase attempted to run over a Texas State Trooper. The incident was caught on body camera footage.

The drivers who have open warrants are the most dangerous, law enforcement officials have explained to The Center Square, because they have the most to lose if they get caught. They are often illegally carrying firearms and in one recent incident, one tried to run over a state trooper, authorities said.

Most smugglers are responding to ads on social media to smuggle people from the border to larger cities in Texas, according to DPS. Prices for smuggling vary depending on the location, distance to travel, and number of people in the car, but if caught, result in multiple felony counts.

In Kinney County, on April 13, a DPS OLS trooper stopped the driver of a black Volkswagen Passat for a traffic violation on Highway 277, which runs parallel to the Rio Grande River. Upon inspection, he learned the driver had picked up four Mexican nationals, including one minor, who’d entered the country illegally, DPS spokesperson Lt. Chris Olivarez said.

The driver, from Houston, responded to a Craigslist ad to smuggle people from the border.

“Criminal smuggling organizations continue to recruit drivers through social media and advertisements. The driver was recruited through Craigslist,” Olivarez tweeted with accompanying photos.

The Craigslist ad, listed under “Houston, labor gigs,” states, “Transportation Gig Available! All you need is a Vehicle… ALL Vehicle Types Wanted. Payout Same Day and CASH ON DELIVERY!!”

Earlier this month, DPS troopers engaged in a high-speed pursuit on Highway 90 in Kinney County after the driver of a vehicle failed to pull over for a traffic violation. DPS troopers pursued him from behind and drove in front to prevent him from getting away. The driver veered off and on the highway and into the lane on the opposite side of the highway. He eventually lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a fence.

People Are Being Arrested for Carrying Tiki Torches in Charlottesville ‘With the Intent to Intimidate’ — Six Years After it Happened

People are being arrested for carrying tiki torches in Charlottesville “with the intent to intimidate” nearly six years after the march happened.

A Virginia grand jury has charged at least three people with “burning an object with the intent of intimidating a person or group of people,” which carries up to five years in prison.

The march took place on August 11, 2017, and was a major talking point for Joe Biden, who frequently used the rally to condemn former President Donald Trump and his supporters during his campaign.

So far, William Zachary Smith, of Nacona, Texas; Tyler Bradley Dykes, of Bluffton, South Carolina; and Dallas Medina, of Ravenna, Ohio, have been indicted. Commonwealth’s Attorney James Hingeley has been tight-lipped about if more indictments exist.

In addition to the charge of burning an object with the intent to intimidate, Smith has also been charged for using pepperspray during the clash between the marchers and protesters — which carries an additional maximum of 20 years in prison.

According to a report from CNN, “Medina was arrested on Monday, according to court records, but is not currently in custody. Dykes, who was arrested on Friday, and Smith, who was arrested in early January, are both in custody.”

Hingeley had campaigned on prosecuting the marchers after his predecessor declined to do so.

“There are so many people in our community … who were there on August 11 who were terrorized by torch-wielding terrorists,” Hingeley said on the campaign trail in 2019. “There’s a law, a burning objects law, that says they can be prosecuted but our prosecutor’s not doing that.”

The three men were indicted in February, but their court records were just unsealed recently. They have not yet entered their pleas.

NBC News reports that prosecutors said the indictments were issued “as part of a criminal investigation that is active and ongoing” and that they are working with law enforcement to “investigate, analyze applicable laws, and bring charges” when “appropriate.”

“This is our process regardless of how much time has passed or where the alleged offenders may be found,” they said.

The low-level felony charges have no statute of limitations.

James Alex Fields Jr. is serving a life sentence plus 419 years and $480,000 in fines for driving into a crowd of protesters, leading to the death of protester Heather Heyer after the rally the next day. His attorney had argued that he acted in self-defense.
