BOWDOIN, Maine — A man who police say killed four people in a home in rural Maine and then shot three others randomly on a busy interstate highway had been released four days earlier from prison, a state official said Wednesday.

Joseph Eaton, 34,was released Fridayfrom the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, where he had been sentenced in March 2021, originally on a probation violation related to a previous crime, said Anna Black, director of governmental affairs for the Maine Department of Corrections.

Eaton had a criminal history with offenses serious enough to have prevented him from legally possessing a gun in Maine, according to state records.

The shootings in Maine began in the small town of Bowdoin, where four people were killed Tuesday. Then a chaotic scene developed in which shots were fired at vehicles on an interstate highway over 20 miles (32 kilometers) away in the community of Yarmouth, police said. Three people were shot there, and one remained in critical condition Wednesday.

“This is an active investigation with a lot of moving parts,” Shannon Moss, state police spokesperson, said Wednesday.

The day before the shootings, an anguished man believed to be Eaton posted a roughly two-minute live video on Facebook criticizing peoplewho he said are Christian and don't give people a second chance. “What good does it do to hate somebody?” he said, choking back tears on the video. “You know, it destroys you.”

On the day he was released from prison, the man believed to be Eaton posted on Facebook that he was feeling thankful. “It’s finally over. There are so many people I can’t wait to see."

Moss confirmed that state police were aware of the video, and that it’s part of their investigation.

Eaton, who was living in Bowdoin, was charged with four counts of murder but was not immediately charged in the highway shootings, she said. He was jailed while awaiting a court appearance. It was unclear if he had an attorney to speak on his behalf, a jail official said Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Bowdoin homicidevictims were identified as the suspect's parents,62-year-old Cynthia Eaton and 66-year-old David Eaton, and their friends,72-year-old Robert Eger and 62-year-old Patricia Eger, officials said.

State police didn't discuss any possible motive.

Transported to a hospital from the Yarmouth scenewere Sean Halsey, 51, and his two children: Justin Halsey, 29, and Paige Halsey, 25. All three are Bowdoinham residents, according to officials.

The seven people shot Tuesday were the latest victims of mass shootings in the U.S., whose targets included a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee; a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, and a Sweet Sixteen party in a small city in Alabama.

Ian Halsey, of Bowdoinham, said that two cousins were shot and that his uncle suffered shrapnel injuries in a single car. One of his cousins is in critical condition, and none of the family knew the shooter, he said.

“They were just passersby in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said of his family. “It’s horrible what happened.”

George Soros-backed DA Takes Office in Cumberland County

An environmental activist and attorney who won the Democratic Party primarywith the help of more than $300,000 from far-left mega donor George Soros is now the District Attorney in Cumberland County after winning her uncontested general election.

Jacqueline Sartoris, whose platform included not charging or dismissing many criminal cases against individuals under the age of 25, will now be the top prosecutor for Maine’s largest city, Portland.

Sartoris is just one of many progressive attorneys Soros and ideologically aligned groups have supported in a bid to transform criminal prosecutions at the state and local level.

Rachael Rollins, the current U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, previously served as the D.A. for Suffolk County, which contains Boston. During her tenure, she advocated for the non-prosecution of a host of non-violent crimes.

Sartoris’ campaign websites indicates that her preference is for fewer prosecutions and more alternative responses to crime.

She enter office as Portland experiences an uptick in crime.

Accused killer’s slain parents asked for him to serve probation near them in Florida

Avatar photo by Judy Harrison 10 hours ago

The parents of the man accused of slaying them as they stayed with friends in Bowdoin sought to rehabilitate Joseph M. Eaton when he was released from a Maine prison five years ago.

Cynthia R. Eaton, 63, and David Lee Eaton, 66, both of Ocala, Florida, advocated for their son to serve his probation at their home and work for his mother’s window cleaning business. They and the Maine couple, Robert C. Eger Jr., 72, and Patti Deraps Eger, 62, were found shot to death Tuesday in the Egers’ home at 1459 Augusta Road in Bowdoin.

Their deaths have been ruled homicides by the Maine medical examiner’s office. Joseph Eaton, 34, has been charged with four counts of murder.

The letter, which was dated Jan. 20, 2017, and sent to the courthouse in Wiscasset, is attached to a court file and is a window into the parents’ challenges with a son who had a violent criminal history before and afterward. They said he needed their “support and guidance.”

The elder Eatons asked that Joseph Eaton be allowed to serve the three years of probation on his Maine sentence in Florida and live with them. The letter said that he was expected to be released in late July or early August from the now-closed Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport.

The letter was signed by both parents, who noted their occupations. David Eaton was a retired U.S. Navy chief, while Cindy Eaton owned a window cleaning company in Auburndale, Florida, which is roughly 48 miles east of Tampa.

The parents said they wanted Joseph Eaton to stay with them until he could settle into his own home and they were “willing to do whatever it takes to comply with all requirements and regulations to allow this to occur.”

“Cindy owns her own business, has battled through some serious health concerns over the last two years and currently needs assistance to keep the business profitable,” the letter read.

The parents went on to say that three years earlier an older son had lived with them after getting out of the U.S. Marines and being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“He moved in with us and we worked with him and successfully helped him get back on his feet and focused on his future,” the letter went on. “Our efforts helped him become a positive contributor to society and he now has a bright future with a great career.”

The Eatons’ hopes for their younger son were thwarted when Joseph Eaton was arrested by deputies with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 21, 2017, after a violent incident at a relative’s home. After Eaton served three years in a Florida prison, he was returned to Maine, where his probation was revoked.

Eaton was on probation in Florida for a 2015 assault in Maine on a relative. His probation was revoked because of the new criminal convictions in Florida. Eaton, whose criminal history in Maine dates back to 2013, has convictions for operating while under the influence of intoxicants, assault on a child under the age of six and an assault on a fellow prisoner at the Maine State Prison in Warren.

Joseph Eaton was released Friday from the Maine Correctional Center in Windham after completing his sentence. His mother picked him and took him to the Egers where they were staying, according to the Maine State Police.

To friends,Patti Deraps Eger and her husband, Robert C. Eger Jr., were friendly, God-fearing people. She had a passion for scrapbooking and feeding those who entered their home, and he was a Navy veteran and skilled builder.

The Egers were found dead in their Bowdoin home Tuesday alongside their friends, Cynthia R. Eaton, 63, and David Lee Eaton, 66, of Florida. Joseph M. Eaton of Bowdoin, who was their son, was charged with murder in the shooting deaths of the four people, Col. William Ross of the Maine State Police said at a Wednesday news conference.

Eaton was apprehended on Tuesday after shooting three others along Interstate 295 in Yarmouth and is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

“Patti was the kind of person who always had a smile on her face and gave everyone a hug,” said Linda Walker of Bowdoin, who called herself Patti’s best friend of 20 years. “She opened her door to anyone and if you went to visit her, she wanted to feed you. She took care of us all and she was loved by everyone.”

Patti’s signature dish was taco stew. She was known for giving people Twizzlers, her favorite candy and called all her friends “sistah,” Walker said.

Walker met Patti through a local scrapbooking community of about 40 people and the two became fast friends. When their group would take an annual trip to Sunday River, Walker said they usually shared a bed and would “stay up laughing and telling silly stories half the night.”

Patti would make a scrapbook each year to raise money for the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach food pantry, where she served on the board of directors. But her scrapbooks were usually filled with photos of her family and friends.

“I think she has more pictures of me than my family does,” Walker said. “She was always taking everyone’s picture for a scrapbook.”

Patti, who was 62, and Bob, aged 72, met through a mutual friend when they both worked at Bath Iron Works, one of the state’s largest shipyards known for making Navy destroyers.

“Patti and Bob were the best people in the world,” Walker said. “They were very down to earth, honest, good, God-fearing people.”

Bob worked in the Bath shipyard after serving in the Navy but later left to start his own company that specialized inmaking homes out of insulated concrete forms, which is considered to be stronger and more energy efficient than other construction materials like wood.

James Schildroth, a Brunswick-based architect who worked with Bob on a large Freeport home, called him “a very good builder.”

Patti worked at BIW until she had the couple’s first and only child, a son in his 20s who now lives in Texas with his wife. The couple were also active in the West Bowdoin Baptist Church, Walker said.

When she wasn’t scrapbooking, volunteering or visiting with friends, Patti would bring food to her 95-year-old father, who worked as a lighthouse keeper around Maine when she and her five siblings were growing up, Walker said.

Phyllis Brannon of Durham, who served on the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach board of directors with Patti for four years, said Patti was “always looking to help people in any way she could” and could always be counted on to bake something for the food pantry’s bake sale fundraisers.

When Brannon first joined the food pantry’s board of directors, she said Patti “took me under her wing” and explained how things worked.

“She was always very friendly, likable and willing to help,” Brannon said. “We know where she is, but we’re praying for all the people she left behind.”

Joseph M. Eaton allegedly shot and killed his parents and their friends in Bowdoin after he was released Friday from a Maine prison.

The Maine State Police identified the victims found in a home at 1459 Augusta Road and the three who were wounded just over an hour later in a random Tuesday shooting on an Interstate 295 exit ramp 25 miles away in Yarmouth. Eaton, 34, was apprehended there.

Cynthia R. Eaton, 63, and David Lee Eaton, 66, both of Ocala, Florida, Joseph Eaton’s parents, and the other couple, Robert C. Eger Jr., 72, and Patricia Deraps Eger, 62, who owned the home, died at the Eger home, Col. William Ross of the state police said at a Wednesday news conference.

Their bodies were found about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday morning but police have not said when they died. The Maine medical examiner’s office determined that all four deaths were homicides. The Eatons and Patricia Eger were found dead inside the house, and David Eaton was found in a garage, Ross said.

Someone who knew the Egers but had not been able to reach anyone at the home drove there to try and make contact, Ross said. This family member entered the home, discovered a victim and called the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph Eaton was charged Tuesday with four counts of murder. He had not been charged in the Yarmouth shootings as of Wednesday afternoon but is expected to be, town police said.

Those wounded on the exit ramp are Sean Halsey, 51, and his two children, Justin Halsey, 29, and Paige Halsey, 25, all of Bowdoinham. Paige Halsey is still in critical condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland, police said. The men suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Eaton was firing randomly at cars he believed to be police following him and struck three other vehicles traveling on the interstate, Ross said. No one else was injured. Eaton was found in a wooded area about 10:50 a.m. near the Exit 15 southbound ramp.

Joseph Eaton was released from the Maine Correctional Facility in Windham on Friday at the end of a sentence for violating probation on a domestic violence assault charge dating back to 2015, police said. Upon his release, his mother, Cynthia Eaton, met him at the prison and brought him to Bowdoin to stay with the Egers, Ross said.

Eaton was taken to Maine Medical Center where he was medically cleared and transported to the Portland Police Department where an interview was conducted, according to police. Ross said Eaton confessed to killing his parents and their friends in Bowdoin.

Eaton is being held without bail at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. He is charged with four counts of murder. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance before a judge at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in West Bath District Court.

He has a long and violent criminal history in Maine and also has convictions in Florida for assaulting a firefighter and a police officer, as well as for illegal drug use. Neither his parents or the Egers were victims of his crimes before this week, according to court records.

Attorneys Andrew Wright of Brunswick and David Paris of Bath have been appointed to represent Eaton. Wright declined Wednesday to comment on the case

If convicted of murder, Joseph Eaton faces between 25 years and life in prison. Under Maine law, judges may impose life sentences on defendants convicted of multiple homicides.
