Senate Judiciary asks Chief Justice Robert to testify on high court ethics amid Thomas revelations

Democrats Pounce

The Judiciary Committee if SCOTUS does not independently resolve the ethics issues, the panel "will consider legislation to resolve it."

Updated: April 20, 2023 - 3:21pm

The Senate Judiciary Committee said Thursday that Supreme Court Chief

Justice John Roberts has been invited to testify in a hearing about court ethics reform — amid recent revelations about Justice Clarence Thomas going on luxury vacations with his billionaire friend.

"The time has come for a new public conversation on ways to restore confidence in the Court’s ethical standards," committee Chairman Illinois DemocratDick Durbintold Roberts in a letter dated April 10.

The hearing is scheduled for May 2, and Roberts will be allowed to designate another justice to appear before the committee, Durbin also said.

Sitting justices last appeared before the committee in 2011, when now-retired Justice Stephen Breyer and Justice Antonin Scalia before his death testified on the constitutional role of judges.

The Democrat-led committee said Thursday that if the Supreme Court does not independently resolve it recent ethics issues the panel "will consider legislation to resolve it."

Thomas has said was not required to report on the trips he and his wife went on with Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow.

Biden pledges $1 billion more to international Green Climate Fund

Total taxpayer contributions to the group now total $2 billion, with more likely to come.

Updated: April 20, 2023 - 3:13pm

President Joe Biden announced plans Thursday to give $1 billion more in U.S. taxpayer money to the South-Korea-based Green Climate Fund, which is associated with United Nations.

The announcement was made by the White House in a fact sheet in which it also announced Biden will convene a Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate in which the president intends to "highlight new steps" toward his efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Fund Deputy Executive Director Henry Gonzalez said the money is "urgently needed" to help developing countries counter climate change.

The group considers itself "the world’s largest climate fund" and a "critical element of the historic Paris Agreement," the international climate accord brokered by the Obama administration in 2015 and that President Trump officially exited in 2020.

The funds will bring the United States' total investment in GCF to $2 billion.

The President will be joined by other leaders in new efforts aimed at accelerating progress in four key areas necessary for keeping a 1.5°C limit on warming within reach, specifically:

• Decarbonizing energy: Announcing steps to drive down emissions in the power and transportation sectors, including scaling up of clean energy, setting ambitious 2030 zero-emission vehicle goals, and decarbonizing international shipping.

• Ending deforestation of the Amazon and other critical forests: Working through the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership to mobilize public, private, and philanthropic support.

• Tackling potent, non-CO2 climate pollutants: Launching a Methane Finance Sprint to cut methane emissions and accelerating hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phasedown under the Kigali Amendment.

• Advancing carbon management: Partnering with countries to accelerate carbon capture, removal, use, and storage technologies through a COP 28 Carbon Management Challenge to deal with emissions that can’t otherwise be avoided.

White House disputes whistleblower claim Hunter Biden got 'preferential treatment' in IRS probe

"President Biden has made clear that this matter would be handled independently by the Justice Department," the White House said.

Updated: April 20, 2023 - 2:36pm

The White House on Thursday denied IRS whistleblower's allegations that federal prosecutors engaged in "preferential treatment and politics" to prevent first son Hunter Biden from being charged in a criminal tax probe.

"Since he took office and consistent with his campaign promise that he would restore the independence of the Justice Department when it comes to decision-making in criminal investigations, President Biden has made clear that this matter would be handled independently by the Justice Department, under the leadership of a U.S. Attorney appointed by former President Trump, free from any political interference by the White House," White House spokesperson Ian Sams said, according to Fox News Digital. "He has upheld that commitment."

The Biden administration's denial of wrongdoing comes after a top-ranking IRS official who has been overseeing Hunter Biden's criminal tax probe since 2020 revealed Wednesday that he is ready to come forward with "examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected."

House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) told Just the News: "We've been wondering all along where the heck the DOJ and the IRS have been. Now it appears the Biden administration may have been working overtime to prevent the Bidens from facing any consequences." (Comer you know the IRS and FBI wouldn't do anything, it's a captured operation)
