Western military aid ‘not enough’ – Ukraine

“We are thankful to our allies for their military help. But: it is not enough,” Melnik wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

The US has already provided more that $35.4 billion worth of arms to Kiev since the start of the fighting last February, with the EU and its member states adding another $13.3 billion. But Melnik insisted that “Ukraine needs 10 times more to finish Russian aggression this year.”

“We call upon our partners to cross all artificial ‘red lines’ and devote 1% of GDP for weapons deliveries,” the diplomat said.

NATO demands that its member states allocate 2% of their GDP to defense spending. However, the bloc’s annual report, which was published in March, revealed that only seven of its 30 members had been able to meet that target in 2022.

Kiev, which secured a promise to supply main battle tanks from the US, UK, Germany and some other countries earlier this year, is nowpressuring its foreign backers to provide warplanes too.

In another tweet on Saturday, Melnik mocked German Foreign Minister Boris Pistorius for suggesting that Tornado and Eurofighter jets would be “unsuitable” for the Ukrainian military.

“Oh, yes?.. Really?” the deputy foreign minister wrote. Berlin had originally ruled out delivering its Leopard 2 tanks, but is now “so proud” to be sending 18 of them to Kiev, he noted.

Melnik was Ukraine’s ambassador in Germany until last July, and often made headlines in this role with scandalous comments. He labeled German Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “offended liverwurst” for his unwillingness to visit Kiev, but later apologized. He also told Elon Musk to “f**k off” in relation to the billionaire’s peace proposals.’

In one interview as ambassador,Melnik defendedcontroversialUkrainian hero Stepan Bandera, who collaborated with the Nazis during WWII and is accused of the mass murder of Jews and Poles, comparing him to noble thief Robin Hood. West knows Ukraine weapons leaking to black market – Seymour Hersh

Poland, Romania and other countries are being flooded with Western arms intended for Kiev, the veteran journalist says

Western-supplied arms are being sold by Ukrainian commanders to smugglers in Poland, Romania and other states, veteran American journalist Seymour Hersh has claimed.

The Pulitzer Prize winner, speaking to Afshin Rattansi on his program ‘Going Underground,’ said the West is aware of this black market trade, as some reports about missing arms shipments have even appeared in the US media.

Hersh claimed that, according to his data,almost immediatelyafter the conflict broke out between Kiev and Moscow last February, “Poland, Romania, other countries on the borderwere being flooded with weaponswe [the US and allies] were shipping for the war to Ukraine.”

“Often, it wasn’t generals, it was colonels and others, who were given shipments of some weapons, [who] would personally resell them… to the dark market,” he explained.

The journalist noted that there was concern in the West last year that some of the arms sent to Ukraine, such as Stinger shoulder-launched missiles, could be used to “shoot down an airplane at considerable height.”

As for Western-supplied weapons ending up on the black market, “CBS wrote a story about it that they were forced to retract,” Hersh said.

When asked about why the piece was retracted, the journalist said the media is supporting the stance of the US government that “we’re on the side of Ukraine. We all hate Russia.”

Hersh was likely referring to the documentary“Arming Ukraine,” which CBS aired last August. The promo for the film, which included a claim by the founder of pro-Ukraine NGO Blue-Yellow, Jonas Ohman, thatonly 30% of military aid actually reached the frontline, was removed, while the documentary itself and the story accompanying it were redacted.

Russian officials have on many occasions warned about Western-supplied arms being smuggled outside Ukraine, thus deteriorating the security situation elsewhere around the globe.

“NATO military supplies intended for the Kiev regimeend up in the hands of terrorists, extremists and criminal groupsin the Middle East, Central Africa, Southeast Asia,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in October. At the time, she estimated the black marketturnover at $1billion per month.

An investigation by RT last summer also revealed how various weapons supplied to Kiev by the West were being sold on the dark net. The journalists were able to swiftly negotiate to the purchase of a US-made kamikaze drone with smugglers. However, it impossible to confirm whether the sellers actually had the weapons in stock, as the reporters did not complete the purchase.

Ex-president warns G7 against banning exports to Russia

Moscow will be forced to retaliate, Dmitry Medvedev says

Russia may quit the Ukraine grain dealif the Group of Seven (G7) nations place a total ban on the export of goods to the country, former president and current deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, wrote in his Telegram channel on Sunday.

According to the senior official,Moscow may also retaliateby restricting its own exports to Western states.

“The G7 idea of a total ban on exports to our country is excellent, in that it alsoimplies a reciprocal termination of exportsfrom our country in the most sensitive categories for the G7. In this case, the grain deal and many other things they need will end for them,” Medvedev wrote.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that the G7 countries, namely the UK, Germany, Italy, Canada, the US, France and Japan, areconsidering an embargo on most exportsto Russia, with the exception of a few crucial categories such as medicines, food, and agricultural products.

Currently, exports from Western states to Russia are, by default, allowed, while restrictions apply only to goods targeted by sanctions. According to the reports, the G7 plans to put this ban forward at the group’s next summit in Japan, scheduled for May, and to persuade the wider EU to join the action.

On Friday, however, a senior EU official told reporters in Brussels that the prospect of a total export ban was discussed at the latest G7 ministerial meeting in Japan. Later the same day, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that moves to completely ban exports to Russia could only “further exacerbate the global economic crisis.”

Banning exports to Russia would see most of the remaining trade flows from Western states to the country scrapped. While the volume of EU and G7 exports to Russia has almost halved over the past year amid existing restrictions, nearly $70 billion worth of goods from these nations is still exported to the country, according to Geneva-based Trade Data Monitor.

‘I am the Fuhrer,’ ex-UK PM told adviser – media

A new book reveals fresh details about the often turbulent reign of Boris Johnson

Former British prime minister Boris Johnson referred to himself as “the Fuhrer” and “the King” as he sharply criticized his former chief adviser Dominic Cummings, according to excerpts from a new book ‘Johnson at 10’ published on Sunday by UK newspaper The Times.

In passages based on the account by another high-ranking figure within the UK’s ruling Conservative Party, Michael Gove, the book says Johnson dramatically fell out with Cummings soon after the 2019 UK election in which the Tories gained an 80-seat majority in parliament

According to Gove, Johnson felt as though he was being controlled “as a tempestuous thoroughbred, with a strong whip and bridle to keep him in order” as Cummings attempted to stage-manage which issues would or would not get the prime minister’s attention. This situation, The Times adds, “increasingly troubled” the former prime minister.

“Some days the prime minister could laugh it off, but other days he didn’t,” according to Gove. This led, the book claims, to an outburst from Johnson as he attempted to wrest back control of Downing Street: “I am meant to be in control. I am the Fuhrer. I am the King who takes the decisions.” (I bet the UK are thanking their lucky stars right now, except all their leaders believe this about themselves.)

The book – written by Anthony Seldon and Raymond Newell – also alleges that Johnson would cite his then-fiancee (now wife) Carrie Johnson as another controlling influence in his inner circle. Allegedly describing Carrie as “mad and crazy,” Johnson would use her as an excuse to avoid confrontation on key issues, the book says.

A spokesperson for Johnson told The Times that the claims made in the book were just “the usual malevolent sexist twaddle” put forth by his political foes.

Cummings, who was a chief architect of Brexit – the 2016 referendum that paved the way for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union – became an increasingly controversial figure within the UK political ecosystem soon after helping Johnson secure his resounding 2019 election win. He was frequently reported to have clashed with colleagues in Downing Street.

Cummings’ standing within the government was severely tarnished after it was revealed that he’d flagrantly violated lockdown rules during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. This prompted anger on both sides of the political divide, as Johnson staked much of his own political capital on attempting to salvage the position of his key adviser. Baltic states demand explanations from China

A scandal ensues after Beijing’s ambassador in Paris called into question the sovereignty of former Soviet republics

Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania have lodged a joint protest at a recent remark by the Chinese ambassador to France, and demanded an explanation from Beijing. Speaking to the media, Lu Shaye called into question the legal basis for the sovereignty of former Soviet republics.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics described Lu’s comment as “unacceptable,” and revealed that Riga, in coordination with Tallinn and Vilnius, had summoned the Chinese charges d’affaires in the three Baltic countries to “provide explanations on Monday.”

In a separate post, Rinkevics wrote that the countries expect a “complete retraction of this statement” by Beijing.

Estonia’s top diplomat, Margus Tsahkna, denounced Lu’s assessment as “false” and a “misinterpretation of history.” He insisted that the “Baltic states under international law have been sovereign since 1918 but were occupied for 50 years.”

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, in turn, noted that the Chinese diplomat’s remark serves as proof that Beijing cannot be trusted as a peace broker in the Ukraine conflict.

In an interview with France’s LCI broadcaster on Friday, Ambassador Lu discussed the Ukraine conflict and claimed that “countries of the former Soviet Union don’t have effective status in international law because there is no international agreement to make their status as a sovereign country concrete.”

In a statement on Sunday, the French Foreign Ministry emphasized its solidarity with the Eastern European NATO allies, adding that the Baltic states acquired their independence “after decades of oppression.”

Paris also made it clear that it expects Beijing to clarify its position on the issue.

Thethree Baltic states were part of the Russian Empire from the 18th centuryuntil the 1917 revolution. Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania declared their independence a year later. In 1940, the Soviet Union deployed its military to the three countries, which saw local communists come to power. The new authorities soon issued formal requests to join the USSR.

From 1941 until 1945, the Baltic states were occupied by Nazi Germany.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius have insisted that the decades of the Soviet rule were nothing but an illegal occupation – a description Moscow rejects.

The Russian Foreign Ministry contends that the three states were absorbed by the USSR in accordance with international laws and norms that were in force in the mid-20th century.

‘Traumatized’ UK spy murdered own child – Times

Leaked documents suggest a British agent who was sent to Pakistan was psychologically unsuited to the task

The British security services sent a UK national to infiltrate a jihadist camp on the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderdespite concernsabout his mental wellbeing, The Times reported on Saturday, citing leaked government documents. On his return to the UK, the mentally distressed spy killed his own child.

According to documents viewed by the British newspaper, the unnamed man was sent by MI6 to document a camp used by Taliban and Al-Qaeda extremistsdespite registering the worst possible scoreon a test designed to gauge emotional stability. The report claims that the spy also had a criminal record and had previously experienced a mental breakdown.

Upon his return to the UK after his assignment, it was recorded by MI6 that the man was in a state of extreme mental distress, according to the documents. He would later admit to killing his own child, who was found deceased with numerous severe injuries. He was arrested and charged with murder. A jury in a subsequent trial accepted that the spy had been suffering from mental illness but found him guilty of murder.

It is not known exactly when the spy was sent to the mountainous Waziristan region for his assignment, but The Times reported that he had been tasked with posing as a jihadist soldier. The area has been targeted for counter-insurgency operations by the Pakistani government, and has also been bombed by US forces.

While on the assignment, it’s claimed that he was forced to clean and bury dead and badly disfigured Taliban fighters. He witnessed the beheadings of a family accused of being US spies, and was also required to hold the decapitated head of a child.

It was noted in his debriefing that when the spy returned to the UK he had a significantly high stress level. He was given an all-expenses paid holiday but a doctor would later say that he was incapable of performing everyday tasks as a result of his psychological disorder, the report says.

According to the spy’s legal defense, his well-being and that of those around him was “entirely disregarded” by the UK security services. “He was an incredibly vulnerable man and his child was left in the most vulnerable of circumstances,” said Liam Kotrie of Mary Monson Solicitors in comments published on Saturday.

Citing policy, the UK intelligence agencies refused to comment when approached by The Times.

US Embassy issues security alert in Sudan

Washington has advised its 16,000 citizens in the war-torn country to shelter in place because evacuation would be too dangerous

The American Embassy in Sudan has issued a security alert advising theapproximately 16,000 US citizensin the country to shelter in place because it’s not currently safe to undertake an evacuation effort amid fierce fighting between government forces and militants in Khartoum.

The violence is so fierce that the embassy itself remains under a shelter-in-place order and can’t provide consular services, according to an alert issued on Saturday. US officials cited ongoing fighting and gunfire in Khartoum and surrounding areas.

“There have also been reports of assaults, home invasions, and looting,” the embassy said. “US citizens are strongly advised to remain indoors, shelter in place until further notice, and avoid travel to the US Embassy.”

The airport in Khartoum is currently closed, and the embassy has distanced itself from any efforts to get people out of the country by traveling over the 500-mile land route to Port Sudan on the Red Sea. “It is not currently safe to undertake a US government-coordinated evacuation of private US citizens,” the notice said. “There is incomplete information about significant convoys departing Khartoum traveling toward Port Sudan. The embassy is unable to assist convoys. Traveling in any convoy is at your own risk.”

The US military has reportedly deployed additional troops to a base in Djibouti to prepare for a possible evacuation of American personnel in Sudan. A decision hasn’t yet been made on whether to close the embassy, which has about 70 US staffers.

Violence in the East African country has escalated in recent days as government troops battle with Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid adispute over the planned integrationof the paramilitary group into the military. A US Embassy convoy came under attack by militants on Monday. At least one American has been killed since the fighting started earlier this month. The conflict has left hundreds of people dead on both sides.

The Sudanese Armed Forces said earlier on Saturday that US, UK, French and Chinese diplomatic personnel would be evacuated by air with military aircraft provided by Khartoum. The Sudanese Army chief, General Fattah al-Burhan, agreed to facilitate the evacuation “in the coming hours,” according to the notice.

Saudi Arabia has already evacuated more than 150 people from Sudan by sea. More than 60 of the evacuees were from other countries, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and Canada.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak held a meeting of his government’s emergency response committee, including Defence Minister Ben Wallace, to discuss “a number of contingencies.” The British Foreign Officeadvised on Saturday that in the event of a ceasefire, “any decision to move must be taken at individual risk.”

The US handling of the Sudan situation is getting added scrutiny because of the government’s chaotic August 2021 evacuation from Afghanistan, which left hundreds of people dead and thousands of Americans stranded.

US House Foreign Affairs Committee ChairmanMichael McCaul sent a letterto Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Friday, “expressing grave concerns for the safety of all US citizens in Sudan and urging the State Department to not repeat the mistakes of the Afghanistan evacuation.”

EU’s top diplomat wants naval patrols off Taiwan

The move would help to maintain a “peaceful status quo” around the island, Josep Borrell claims

European navies should “patrol” the Taiwan Strait, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said, arguing that the move would help to maintain the “status quo” in the region. The diplomat floated the idea in an opinion piece published by the Journal Du Dimanche on Saturday.

The EU continues to view China as “a partner, a competitor and a rival all at the same time,”in line with its strategy adopted back in 2019, Borrell wrote.

The bloc should assert itself more firmly on the Taiwan issue, “which concerns us economically, commercially and technologically,” he argued.

“This is why I call on European navies to patrol the Taiwan Strait to signify Europe’s commitment to freedom of navigation in this absolutely crucial area,” he continued.

“On Taiwan, our position is simple and consistent. In our view,there is only one China. But not under any conditions. And certainly not through the use of force,” Borrell wrote, claiming that “vast majority of Taiwanese people believe that [maintaining] the peaceful status quo is the most appropriate solution.”

The EU official pledged to put the idea of conducting patrols to the bloc’s foreign ministers on Monday, when they are set to convene to discuss Brussels’ policies towards Beijing. At the same time, he admitted the patrols should be set up carefully, and EU nations should “be vigilant against provocations and overbidding.”

The proposal is similar to the US practice of so-called “freedom of navigation” patrols involving military vessels routinely dispatched to the Taiwan Strait, the South China Sea, and other regions. The patrols have long been an issue in bilateral ties between Washington and Beijing, with the latter arguing that the practice only stirs up tensions rather than helping to bring ‘stability’ to the contentious waterways.

In his piece, Borrell also touched on one of the most controversial international issues of recent months – the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. While Beijing has maintained a neutral stance, urging all parties to exercise restraint and seek a diplomatic solution to the hostilities, it has been repeatedly accused by Kiev’s Western backers of supporting Moscow.

“We have said it over and over again to theChinese: it is not in your interest to support Russia. Especially since by supporting it you will only increase the polarization of theinternational systemthat you claim to want to fight, ” Borrell wrote, pledging to reiterate this stance at the upcoming ministerial meeting.
