Former Vice President Mike Pence promised to ātell the truthā when he testifies before a federal grand jury probing the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.
āWeāll obey the law, weāll tell the truth and the story that Iāve been telling the American people all across the country ā the story that I wrote in the pages of my memoir ā thatāll be what I tell in that setting as well,ā Pence said in a Sunday interview with CBSā Robert Costa on āFace the Nation.ā
Pence was subpoenaed by the Justice Departmentās special counsel Jack Smith to testify before the panel. He initially fought what he described as the āunprecedentedā move to compel his testimony, pointing to his role as president of the Senate as protecting him from testifying under the U.S. Constitutionās āspeech or debateā clause. He dropped his legal fight earlier this month.
He told Costa his attorneys have arranged a date for his grand jury appearance, but didnāt elaborate. He also said heās grateful that a court acknowledged his concerns about testifying.
āFor the first time in history, a federal court acknowledged that that provision of the Constitution applies to the vice president and theyāve limited what theyāll be requesting of me,ā Pence said.
Costa pressed Pence about whether heāll testify about private conversations with then-President Donald Trump.
āI think Iām limited about what I can say about the proceedings of the grand jury or the decision of the judge, but people can be confident that weāll obey the law, weāll comply with the law,ā Pence answered.
