Rise in stillbirths at Royal Derby Hospital a 'matter of concern' as review announced
The number of stillbirths is above the national average and rising (UK)
There are concerns over the number of stillbirths at the Royal Derby Hospital with health chiefs taking action to find out why the hospital’s rate of stillbirths is higher than the national average. While the number of cases per 1,000 births remains low, the rate of stillbirths is substantially above the national average and continues to rise – standing at 4.55 per 1,000 births, above 4.2 nationally.
For comparison, the rate at Chesterfield Royal Hospital is 1.77 per 1,000 births, though officials say this may be lower due to the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust handling more complex cases, including premature births and “foetal abnormalities”. Around 6,000 births a year take place at Royal Derby, with 3,500 at Chesterfield Royal. The trust said that for the many thousands of families who have babies at Derby and Burton hospitals, the vast majority of experiences will be joyous, making it all the more painful when families lose a baby.
Comparing stillbirth rates to these figures would indicate 27 stillbirths a year at Royal Derby and six at Chesterfield Royal. In a Derby City Council health scrutiny meeting this week (April 18), Chris Weiner, chief medical officer at the Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board, said the stillbirth rate was a “matter of concern” for the organisation, which oversees health and care across the county.
