Current European monitoring capabilities do not allow for the observation of all space debris and satellites. The France wants to eventually have a new service for providing space surveillance data, especially in low-Earth orbit, and has issued a tender last year to launch space monitoring projects. CNES is now finalizing the selection of the five winning consortia by signing the contracts committing these projects.
Last December, the government announced the five winning consortia of the "Data Catalogue for Space Surveillance" call for tenders entrusted to CNES and financed by the "France 2030" investment plan. The idea, ultimately, is to have a monitoring system capable of cataloguing and tracking the different objects orbiting the Earth.
Now is the time to sign contracts for the first phase of these projects. The consortium composed of ArianeGroup, Eutelsat and Magellium is the first to communicate on its contract with CNES to improve its existing GeoTracker network, currently composed of six telescopes, with the deployment of multi-orbit optical sensors, and the addition of a satellite in geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).
