Though an independent country since the 13th century, in the 18th century, the Russian Empire assumed rule of Lithuania. During WWI, German troops occupied the region while marching to Russia, and they maintained control until the Russian revolution in 1917. At this time, Germany gave Lithuanians the choice to be aligned either with Germany or Russia. Ignoring these options, the Act of Independence of Lithuania was signed, proclaiming independence on February 16, 1918

It is the oldest Scottish mazer still surviving, and one of the oldest and most elaborate British ones. The cup has long been associated with the Isle of Bute, on the west coast of Scotland.

A mazer was a communal drinking cup used while feasting. They were originally made in Germany (between the 11th and 16th centuries) from maple, which has spotted markings - Maser is the German word for these spots.

They take the form of shallow bowls with a foot to rest it on a table, and a decorative boss in the centre of the inside.

The foot, the boss (also known as the print) and the metalwork around the rim of the Bute Mazer are all made of silver.

Children in hospitals are especially vulnerable. In addition to dealing with the challenges that every growing child faces, these children must cope with the added burden of serious illness, trauma and other emotional and physical issues. In 2002, The Heart Touch Project began training volunteers with programs specifically designed for children with serious illness, trauma and those at the final stages of their life. These training programs use a developmental care model to explore the physical and psychological issues that are unique to infants and children. Once volunteers have completed the required Heart Touch Project training program, they can apply to one of our partner hospitals or hospices. The Heart Touch Project is honored to have established partnerships with premier hospitals and hospices in the Southern California area. Our volunteers work in these premier hospitals/hospices NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit), Pediatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Rehabilitation Services, Outpatient Pain Clinic departments and Pain and Palliative Care Units providing compassionate, therapeutic touch, improving the lives for them, their families and their caregivers. Research* has shown that providing compassionate, therapeutic touch to infants and children who are in hospitals and hospices have many measurable benefits:

In early 2010, a devastating earthquake in Haiti left 250,000 people dead, thousands of children orphaned and countless wounded. Those lucky enough to survive this devastating natural disaster were met with the reality that life in their country would never be the same. Masses of children were left displaced, separated from their families.

The sheer magnitude of destruction that has devastated the landscape and infrastructure of Haiti means that many families are unable to reunite and many children are still desperately searching for their loved ones. So many children have no way of knowing if their parents or siblings are alive or dead. They are destined for a life of overwhelming despair and longing to be reunited with their family and loved ones. Although many relief organizations have spear headed efforts to meet the overwhelming physical and emotional needs of the children and families of Haiti, the emotional toll of such a natural disaster cannot be ignored.

There are many children who remain waiting in Haiti's orphanages, to be reunited with their families or adopted by others. We cannot forget the importance of the emotional healing of these children, through nurturing and caring touch.

The Liddle Kidz Foundation Global programs support children living in these traumatic circumstances by providing care, nurturing and stability. Through the use of compassionate and nurturing touch, children feel they are worthy, emotionally cared for and have enhanced self-esteem. This nurturing care combines with their currently harsh circumstances to provide a strong foundation for their future.
