I Testified Before Congress And Democrats Only Wanted To Yell At Me About Old Tweets

Democrats had no rebuttal to my testimony and no defense of their agenda. They wasted everyone’s time with weak and cheap attacks.

On April 19, I testified before the House Ways and Means Committee ostensibly to discuss the effects of the Biden energy agenda on rural America. Instead, I listened to Democrats read through some of my old tweets.

Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., convened a hearing to discuss the so-called “green” tax benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to determine the ultimate beneficiary: the American people or Wall Street and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The topic may not generate the headlines of Hunter Biden’s laptop or boycotts of Bud Light, but the issue, along with the $1.2 trillion in giveaways attached to it, is extremely urgent. Chairman Smith deserves great credit for bringing the issue to the forefront.

Silly me to think the opposition party would be willing to engage in a serious discussion.

I was not surprised by the theatrics. Every member of Congress is a campaigner, and as such, is a showman. Everyone needs a soundbite and clip. I was disappointed in the complete lack of seriousness, especially from the senior Democrat members. Hours wasted on scripted “gotcha” lines. Hours wasted talking past each other, not even remotely addressing the issue at hand, but using the allotted time to, quite frankly, prattle. …

Clarification: I made an unclear reference to "Vanguard." I meant to indicate not Vanguard the investment firm, but rather Vanguard-25, an elite group of top media and tech execs and high government officials. Look at its list of members. It tells you the undemocratic functioning of power to suppress dissent.

1. My name is Andrew Lowenthal. For almost 18 years, I was Executive Director of @EngageMedia, an NGO devoted to protecting digital rights and freedoms. In recent years, I watched with concern and then despair as a dramatic change swept through my field.

1. I had always understood "civil society" to mean "not the military." The former exists to check the latter. So I was shocked to see the depth of collaboration. For instance, "civil society" groups coordinating with Pentagon officials in an "election tabletop" exercise. Why?

1. Also startling: Twitter emails and Slack communications suggesting heightened levels of data access for the military. Or military contractors like Mitre being part of the Aspen Institute's "Information Disorder" report along with NGO and academic colleagues.

1. In a functioning democracy there’s dynamic tension between government, civil society organizations, news media, and industry, all advancing their own interests, in theory keeping one another honest. In the #TwitterFiles we find them all working together, cartel-style.

1. The Western "anti-disinformation" field, with its Government collaboration and calls for more state control over speech and expression, is betraying human rights activists around the world, who fight against online government repression.

1. Let's put the "non-government" back into NGO and defund the "anti-disinformation" industry. After all, the information control shoe will one day be on the other foot.
