Chile’s president moves to bring lithium under state control

Chile’s leftwing president Gabriel Boric has unveiled plans to bring the lithium industry under state control, creating uncertainty for investors in the world’s second-largest producer of the metal crucial to electric car batteries.

In a television address mentioning socialist president Salvador Allende’s 1971 nationalisation of copper, Boric said “the state will participate in the whole [lithium] production cycle and create a National Lithium Company to do so”. It would also impose stricter environmental rules, he said.

Chile is the latest in a series of countries seeking greater control over key mineral resources, after Mexico nationalised its lithium industry last year and Zimbabwe banned unprocessed lithium exports. Indonesia is curbing exports of commodities including nickel, which is used in batteries.

Boric’s proposals fall short of full nationalisation, envisaging majority state-owned partnerships with private companies for the exploration and production of lithium deposits. He also wants to promote the development of value-added lithium products in Chile, something Latin American producers have struggled to achieve.

The plans require the country’s two existing lithium miners, Chile’s SQM and the US company Albemarle, to negotiate an unspecified state participation in their existing concessions, which run to 2030 and 2043 respectively. Boric said the duration of these contracts would be respected. …

A wondrous discovery in Renaissance art reveals a series of hallucinatory illustrations

These depictions of celestial phenomena and portentous signswererecently discovered as part of a collection of 169 illustrations created in Augsburg, Germany around 1552. Reproduced as The Book of Miracles for the first time in its entirety by Taschen, the book is one of the most remarkable modern finds in the field of Renaissance art, offering a unique view into the fears and fascinations of the age. “The unidentified patron who commissioned this manuscript wanted to create a stunning visual experience,” says author Joshua P. Waterman, an expert on German art of the late medieval and early modern periods who authored the new book with fellow academic Till-Holger Borchert. “The Protestant viewer would have reflected on the greater significance of these wonders: Why are there dragons in the sky? Why does it rain blood? Why are there three suns overhead? We know from contemporary sources that the answer was general: Things are wrong in the world. Repent and prepare for the end times, which are possibly now.” Though the gouache and watercolor illustrations add up to an ominous collection, the ultimate message of these signs of doom could be interpreted as positive. “They implied moral improvement could mark a path not only to a better existence on earth, but also eternal life,” says Waterman. “Unfortunately, the catastrophes in the book—earthquakes, floods, storms, fires, and volcanic eruptions—are still all too relevant. Let’s hope instead that 2014 brings harmless wonders such as battles of celestial armies, which was the 16th-century interpretation of northern lights, and maybe some sword-wielding comets.

Imagine a world where we all claim we want the truth.

Then Julian Assange leaks the truth, and we jail him for many years. Jack Teixeira leaks the truth, and we arrest him, try him and say that truth was classified. @TuckerCarlson speaks the truth as the world moves toward World War 3, we call it lies, Russian propaganda and go after him, when we all know that no one wins those wars and there is no glory in the grave, no life in the graveyard, only billions of dollars for the military industrial complex.

Many people claim to be seeking the truth, but in reality, all they do is to become tools for the propaganda.

They come to Washington vowing the drain the swamps but they get so comfortable that they just become part of it. Now, they are flying with the President on Air Force One, they are live on Sundays shows, they wear nice suits, eat at cool restaurants, go to the gym, do yoga and meet beautiful people at happy hours as they drink champagne. How can they abandon that new lifestyle?

Speaking the truth now means they will embarrass their new friends who will ban them from their circle. And so they conform.

People who watch them see it. They've become part of the elite and don't give a f.. about the people anymore. The people then turn their backs and begin to watch people like Tucker Carlson.

With no viewership, they begin to slander him, brand him a liar, a racist, a Russian hack.

Or they're surprised @realDonaldTrump has just won an election. How can that be? It must be the Russians, they say.

They continue to chase the shadows unable to understand that they have abandoned the people and the people have turned their back against them, whether they believe it or not.

You know, I have lived long enough, and got white hair by the way, to know that whether here in Washington D.C. where I am writing this, or over there around the country where you're reading it, the truth remains that trying to get rid of Carlson will not solve their dilemma.
