You can do it. If it can't be turned on and off and moderated, then it must be avoided. I avoid many things for the same reasons. I've never once regretted sobriety or mental clarity.

I tried and tried the other night, but at my latitude only people in the Tex/Mex border region could see it. I could make out a general, very faint magenta hue nortward with good binos, but not aurora. Glad you spotted them.
The way the sun's chugging lately and our field being weak and getting weaker, auroras will get that much more common.
