The part that bugs me is that the article says usss confirmed the brakes were out. How the fuck would hacking the computer cut the brakes? Wtf. I get gunning the engine. The chip handles shit like gas air balance and lots of cars are drive by wire already. But aren't the fucking brakes still just hydraulic pressure from the pedal? Wtf.

I'm too carpleb to know what that even means. But for abs to exist at all, it has to take max pressure from pedal and release and reapply that pressure repeatedly. Usually while you just keep jamming the pedal. So yeah. The chip can absolutely flip to make your pedal pressure meaningless.
