I also noticed something else when reading what the driver said (USA Today article).
She basically said that the brakes didn't work so she pulled the emergency brake. Then she noticed the brakes smoking and she drove into the bushes to try to slow down (at least that's what she said). So if she pulled the E-brake and the brakes started smoking, that would suggest that the car was still being given gas. Obviously, she was trying to slow down so she wouldn't have been doing it. What are the chances of brakes failing and the throttle sticking simultaneously?

Seems like a pretty far distance to go while having the E-brake on to stop, doesn't it?
