PacWest Leads Bank Stock Rebound. Western Alliance and First Horizon Also Jump
Shares of PacWest PACW +73.82% and other regional banks jumped on Friday after a week of precipitous drops. PacWest (ticker: PACW) climbed 48% when the market opened. Western Alliance WAL +35.93% (WAL) spiked 33%. First Horizon (FHN) advanced 4.3%.
Other regionals also rose. Comerica (CMA) gained 11%, and Zions Bancorp ZION +17.56% (ZION) went up 13%. The SPDR S&P Regional Banking exchange-traded fund (KRE) increased 3.7%. Although Friday’s gains are striking, they only partly reverse losses made this week. PacWest shares started the week above $10 and are now trading at about $4.50. They’re down 80% this year.
The collapse of First Republic (FRC) on Monday turned investors’ attention to other regional lenders that might have experienced similar problems. Stocks have been rocked by concerns that depositors are taking flight. PacWest shares dropped 50% on Thursday, despite the company saying it hadn’t seen any unusual deposit outflows since the collapse of First Republic at the start of the week. “There’s no doubt that this is a nervous time for markets as we wait for the next series of resolutions in the U.S. regional banking crisis,” said Deutsche Bank analyst Jim Reid. The “scary thing is that the attacks are increasingly looking speculative but risk is becoming self-fulfilling.”
Many investors and policy makers had hoped JPMorgan Chase ‘s ( JPM JPM +1.77% ) purchase of First Republic’s assets on Monday would quell the market jitters, but conerns remain. On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the banking system was “sound and resilient.” The rapid drops in stocks have led some to suspect foul play by traders. On Thursday, the American Bankers Association asked U.S. regulators to take action to stop “market manipulation and other abusive short-selling practices.” (yes it's ALWAYS those nasty short sellers fault-have no porblem if it's done legally but in many cases it isn't but this is a tired argument that they pull out as the excuse-PacWest has 90% institutional ownership and less than 2% execs own any of it so they triggered this which spilled over to the others-at least with todays "rally" they won't be needing a Sunday "solution" this week..inevitable they will though)
